HELP! French Door Wall Oven over Microwave/Speed Oven?

last modified: 5 years ago

Hello there! We are building a house and I have a design dilemma about the placement of the microwave/speed oven. I love the look of a double wall oven except that we use our microwave and toaster oven a lot more than the regular oven. So we will build it with a speed oven and full size oven instead. Here's my dilemma. I'm only 5'1" and the way the pull down door opens makes it hard for me to reach the inside of the microwave. When I saw the GE Cafe french door wall oven I was told by the sales rep that I can place it on top and the matching GE Advantium speed oven will go to the bottom. Having french doors solves the reaching the interior problem. Imagine the 2nd photo with a speed oven instead of a full size oven. I have never been able to find this configuration anywhere to try it. I've taken the specs and try to imagine it in my kitchen (I have a swing out micro & wall oven configuration), but I'm having a hard time imagining it. Does anyone have this configuration and if so, do you like it? If not, why?

The 1st photo is of the model of the plan that we're building. I can't reach the inside of that speed oven as installed. The 2nd photo is the configuration that I want but with a speed oven at the bottom (I can't find a picture anywhere with that configuration), and the 3rd is the photo of the actual appliances that I like which are 2 separate units, except in reverse (french door oven on top and speed oven below). If you have either of these options, I would love to hear your thoughts. Thank you.

Does the fridge door open right into the oven door? you might want to rethink the spacing of that. And yes the second picture you posted looks great!

RL Relocation the cabinets will be adjusted to have proper clearance to open the GE Cafe French door fridge since the doors are so thick. Also, when you said the second picture looks great, do you think the microwave/speed oven below the french door oven will be at a convenient height for regular use? I'm only 5'1" so the lowest I can have the oven installed is with the bottom at 42" from the floor which means that the top of the microwave will be at 40". Do you think that will not be too low?

In reality do what works for you, and also a lot of people put there microwave down in their island, your's will be higher than that so I think it's fine! IMO not a KD lol.

I don't know if you have figured things out but with my remodel I could not put my GE Cafe Double ovens in the cabinet next to my refrigerator. Make sure you have plenty of clearance.

After the remodel 2 years ago (I should have insisted on building new) we are building new. I want 2 French door ovens and one microwave. First GE told me I could not put the microwave above the French Door oven or I could not stack the two French ovens in the same cabinet. Now I know why on stacking the two ovens--It would make the bottom French door oven too low. Now I have decided that I want to put the French Door oven on top and the pull-down door microwave underneath. I hope GE says that will be okay. Let me know what you decided.

I just saw your post about your microwave being 40" from the floor--I just realized that would be too low for me. I am 5' 6 1/2". Back to the drawing board for me.

Hi I decide with to go with a different brand which is KITCHENAID because I really like their black stainless steel and the wood accents in their Preserva french door. Also they have a Smart speed oven and Smart oven that I can stack. All of these made it an easy decision to switch brands. Good luck with your project.

WHAT???? Does KitchenAid have a French Door oven? Right now I have all KitchenAid Appliances--not the greatest luck with them but at least this company took care of me. After 14 service calls on my French Door Refrigerator, they finally replaced it., They bought back my Double Ovens because of a Health Safety Issue. The cooktop still does not work right but I was told that is the way all of the electric cooktops work. Please give me the model numbers of your appliances. Thanks for the information.

I agree that I have not had good luck with my KitchenAid and I would not purchase them again. The one thing I loved with my kitchenAid was the steam cooking. I cant seem to find that in a french door wall oven. Has anyone seen this?

wyosue58- what did you end up doing? I like the cafe french door oven (like the look of it) but would like the speed oven below it.

"When I saw the GE Cafe french door wall oven I was told by the sales rep that I can place it on top and the matching GE Advantium speed oven will go to the bottom."

The Advantium installation instructions show cases only where the Advantium is on the top.

So did you end up going with different appliances?

Thompsoc75 - I ended up going with all Thermador appliances with a steam oven/convection oven wall combo.

@irynaq thank you! This appliance search is driving me nuts- so many choices and so many pros and cons to them all

I decided on Thermador because they have the most flexible induction cooktop and I love their steam oven & convection oven combo. Then their 1, 2, Free program gave us a free dishwasher and hood so we decided going for the matching suite. Good luck with your project.

Lifestyle Coaching, I decided to go with a steam oven and convection oven combination. I'm glad we did because we use the steam oven 90% of the time over the regular oven and reheated food tastes so good!

thank you so much. are they 30” wide?

and do you have a microwave elsewhere in the kitchen or have you transitioned from using one at all? i have 3 young kids and find myself microwaving my coffee so many times a day 😳

We have a small Microwave integrated in the cabinets, but we try to use the steam oven much as possible. And yes, they are the standard 30" wide appliappliances.

I was looking at GE cafe wall oven but am on the fence. Any feedback?

I had a Cafe suite at my last house. We didn't have any problems with it. The deciding factor to go with Thermador for our new house is the Freedom induction cooktop, which we all LOVE!

Dl you have a steam oven that is plumbed or nonplumbed? is it hard to keep clean? I think that I would like one, but not sure.

HU-998625929 we had the choice of getting it plumbed since we were building, but opted not too. It's really easy to fill the pitcher with water, and cleaning is a breeze since it's a steam oven. All we have to do is dry the inside after each use so it keeps it much cleaner than our regular convection oven. But we use the steam over 90% of the time now so the bottom traditional oven still looks brand new!
