Weird problem - padded fabric walls in bathroom

Hi! I’m new to using Houzz but bought a house two years ago and have a weird problem I’d love your thoughts on.

We have a half bath downstairs and there are fabric walls. Not just fabric glued to the wall, but they look sort of padded and pressed in (I’ll post a photo). The only reason we can think is that the original owners might have done that for sound proofing. The house was built in 1988. Everyone comments on it that comes to our house and we call it the “scream room” since it looks sound proof (although it isn’t really) - so it’s gotta change!

Do you think it’s ok to tear it out? And just paint the wall instead? I’m kind of scared to see what’s behind it to be honest!

Looking forward to hearing if you have any suggestions!
