No More Master Bedrooms Or Master Bathrooms In Houston

last modified: 5 years ago

The Houston Association of REALTORS® says it will stop permitting the term “master bedroom” or “master bathroom” to be used in MLS descriptions. The decision to remove the term comes after a group of real estate professionals said the term “master” on property description represents a potential stigma.HAR has updated the phrase to “primary bedroom” and “primary bath” on its MLS and on har.com.The national standards organization for MLSs is reportedly considering a similar change that would make “primary” the new standard nationwide.“‘Master’ represents a stigma and place in time that we need to move forward from,” Tiffany Curry, a Houston real estate broker and owner of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices, told the Houston Chronicle. “As a progressive, diverse city, Houston should be reflective of its citizenship.”Some home builders are dropping the term, too. David Weekley Homes now refers to the space as the “owner’s retreat” instead. The National Association of REALTORS® told the Houston Chronicle that the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development has advised the association that the term “master bedroom” is not discriminatory and that its usage does not violate any fair housing laws.“NAR sees no reason that real estate professionals cannot use the term, as there is also no evidence that it has any historical connection to slavery or any other kind of discrimination,” NAR President Vince Malta said in a statement.Source:“HAR No Longer Using ‘Master’ to Describe Bedrooms and Bathrooms,” Houston Chronicle (June 24, 2020)

How about "en suite" to denote a bedroom with attached bath?

Hey pretty soon my lowly “Bachelors” degree will be offensive.....still waiting......

While I agree this seems a bit reactive, I also believe there is nothing particularly precious about the nomenclature of anything.

Master evolved from maegister which itself came from magis. From an etymological perspective it is a wizard's bedroom (and I guess a wizard's degree). So, I just don't care. Trying to keep nomenclature from changing is quixotic in my opinion.

It’s just the concept of being told to do something that is intrinsically ridiculous.

"How about "en suite" to denote a bedroom with attached bath?"

Many houses have multiple "en suites", but only one master primary main bedroom.

Reminds me of the term "master/slave" commonly used to describe a contractual relationship. I wonder what term is now used.

The use of the term “Primary” bedroom has been common in Canada for quite a while. And remember...the term Master was the term for the “man of the house.” The male/husband. Not just in the antebellum south. Now that people, besides men/males/husbands, purchase or rent homes, re defining the terminology makes sense.

A Master key? A Ship's Master? To master the game of Golf. The school's headmaster. A master recording. A master electrician or carpenter. To master a foreign language. The dog's master taught it to sit. A Masters Degree.

Incredible - PC at its worse.

I read somewhere last week that the word "chief" might also be "banned", as in CEO, CFO, Fire Chief, etc.

Before everyone heads out to their favorite 4:00 p.m. dinner location to kvetch about it, this idea has been around for awhile. https://www.housebeautiful.com/lifestyle/fun-at-home/a1087/master-bedroom-politically-incorrect

You're are taking it personally. It's a zero sum game - you lose and gain nothing.

And it shows privilege that none of you considered saying you'd rather see the Houston Association of Realtors focus on issues such as housing and rent affordability, which overwhelmingly affects people of color, versus reterming 'master suite'.

Jen K... do you feel better about yourself now that you called everyone here privileged? You probably think we should all be full of "white guilt" and are all racists too.

    Sheesh, get a life.

As a kid I used to go with my grandparents for early dinners, close to 4 maybe 5 o’clock once a week to the local diner. Cherished memories for me. I guess Jen likes to bash the elderly.

You two just need to get a room already...sheesh....

@ncrealestate - If the shoe fits since the only thing you gleaned from the conversation is privilege, racist, and white guilt..

What's the point of posting a article that you don't even provide your professional perspective? One that you know will spark debate..You were gaslighting and waited for the fine mature folks (yes, waco most here are North of Boomer) to ruminate on the 'PC world that's changing and they don't like it' and take it away for you. You'd only come back to this post to confirm your bias.

95% (?) on this forum are privileged - they have internet access, they discuss discretionary spending on house design, appliance purchases, and gardening, and they own or rent within 30% of their income.

So it is problematic, if not emblematic, that a group of people who share common privledges

    • spend no time questioning why you would (almost surreptitiously) drop this article into the forum and it's added value, if any
    • would focus on what they lose (the use of master) rather than the reason for the language change (assuming they even read the article)

Because changing that term is going to make things all better right ? !!!!!!

For crying out loud how ridiculous can people get . I have a thought , we all could try just being nice to each other . Everyone is struggling in some shape or form and my heart is heavy about what happened to George Floyd but changing the name of a real estate term is just not gonna make things better.

Might be better Jen, to say what you are doing to make a difference. I moved from a predominantly white SoCal area to Waco a few years ago. Which from what I see is a community that works together, no matter who you are. Besides donating things I don’t need instead of using ebay or a yard sale I have found a unique way to help others. Out here in Texas we have a feral hog problem. We have farmland that the hogs will destroy and eat any food crop planted. I donate hogs to a community to help them out. It takes hard work to get the hogs there, but when I pull up I get everyone running over to my truck and I usually get a nice cold beer out if it. Not a big deal, but I’m always thinking of ways to help out others. That and the three renters I have. I cut their rents in half for 3 months due to Covid, This was back in March, I thought I needed to help others. And I guess I should say 2 of the 3 renters are minorities, although I never considered or Thought about it until now. Didn’t ask if they were affected, just did it. If anyone would like to see my YouTube channel let me know......but don’t go all staxi on me if you don’t like it.
