Bathroom Design--walk-in closet in bathroom

Sorry if this a duplicate. I tried posting it and everything disappeared.

This is our Master Bedroom/Bathroom layout right now. I know most will say the walk-in closet should not be in the bathroom. Right now I have space bags stacked to the right of the opening and my husband lays his clothes there while he takes his shower. We are building a new house and the layout will be somewhat the same but I want to bathroom a little larger. I need to make things as easy as possible for my husband and don't want to make too many changes to upset his routine. We also will be making the bedroom larger. Any suggestions? Right now in our new plans, the closet is not in the bathroom.

If you are building a new house, why not show is its plan?

Suggestions on what? Does your husband -- not sure how to say this, have special needs?

Because the new house plan is a work in progress. I need it to be about 2800 sq ft and right now it is 3400 sq ft. I am using Home Designer Architect to draw up the plans. It has been a while since I have used any of these programs so it is slow going. My husband has had some health issues but is doing much better.

Basically, in Wyoming there are a lot of baths laid out this way with the closet as a part of the bathroom. We have low to No humidity. If we move the closet out of the bath, what could I do for a place for him to hang or lay his clothes while taking a shower?

It's best to consider the plan as a whole and not design sections individually.

Have you considered working with a design professional?

Yes, I have but we live in a very rural area--nearest shopping (like walmart-120 miles round trip). Nearest major shopping 370 miles round trip. I know designing has changed and that is why I am asking some of the questions here "Before" I go too far with my design. I would not want to put something in my house plan that is not "right" or "proper".

You put Home Designer Help: HomeTalk above. Are you suggesting that I go there to ask my questions?

    Thanks

    Only about Home Designer.

I did not realize there is a subject section for HomeTalk. Thanks

I had a set up like this before where we had to walk thru the bathroom to get to the closet. I didn't like it and changed in with a remodel.

I prefer closet out of bathroom too. Could you put a cabinet or stool in the vicinity of the shower for your husband's needs?

By space bags do you mean vacuum bags or something else?

Switch the closet and greater bath area on the left....put a hook outside the closet he can have his clothes hang there then can dress

You would have an L shaped bathroom but could put pocket door in to get to the whole area to save floor and hanging space...

RES, architect. They are the vacuum bags.

    One possibility

One Devoted Dame, this is our present house plan. I like some things in the house but need to make some of the rooms larger and add some rooms like my sewing room (that is down stairs in this plan) a walk-in pantry, more cabinets and more counter space in the kitchen and a den for my husband that is also down stairs). We need everything on one level now.

Lisa Dipiro, thanks for the suggestion.

Design Girl, we remodeled this masterbath 15 years ago because the builder put a large garden tub in and there was hardly any room in front of the sinks. There was nothing to with the closet at that time and it has not really bothered us. Now it will take some getting used to having our closet in our bedroom. We are making our bedroom larger and maybe having a sitting area with a couple of recliners but not sure if sitting areas are even done in homes now.

Our master closet is accessed through the master bathroom, and we very much like it that way.

"If we move the closet out of the bath, what could I do for a place for him to hang or lay his clothes while taking a shower?"

You could make sure there is enough wall space for a couple of hooks, or a hook and a shelf, or a hook and a chair/stool that he could use for his clothes.

Since you are building new, and all one level, look at ADA guidelines so you don't have issues in the future. Things like wider doorways and a curbless shower entry are easy to incorporate in a new build.

Sounds like y'all have a lot of redesigning to do!

Is this a new construction home, or a remodel?

I had never seen the closet-through-bathroom design until I moved to my current area. It's common here, what the heck? When we built our custom here I told the architect that we did not want that.

One Devoted Diva, this will be a new build on the lot next to where we live. I just have to build it so we take advantage of all of our beautiful views. I am going to have an issue where to put the garage--only one place and the kitchen will be on the opposite corner of the house.

calidesign, I have thought about the ADA will make sure everything is the way it is supposed to be.

    One Devoted Diva,

Ohmygosh, this made me smile, lol!!!! My favorite typo. <3

Since it's a new build, what do you think of creating a hallway that separates the shared spaces and private spaces, where both bedrooms are accessed, instead of directly accessing each of them off of shared/communal rooms?

An L or T shaped house would lend itself really well to this kind of arrangement, I think! I know that, being in WY, you'd probably want to keep the house compact for heat retention in winter (which is, what, like 9 months out of the year for you guys? lol), but it's difficult to design a larger, compact single story house without creating dark interiors. :-/

Because the ADA is intended for buildings accessible to the public it is not necessarily the best reference for a house. If one of you is ever in a wheelchair it’s likely it will be motorized and require very different design standards. Start with the exterior.access ramp and leave space for future modifications.

Personally, I don’t see any problem with having a walk in closet off of master bath. In fact, I like the idea... super convenient. As long as it is within your area’s building code guidelines, I don’t see why it would be an issue, or why you would feel you need validation for this idea (?).

People take entire rooms of their existing houses to convert to custom closets, and most folks don’t view that as being odd. I don’t view it as being odd either, btw; and even if I did view it as being odd, it wouldn’t really be my business - since it’s not my house.

As far as ‘’making things easier‘’ for your husband goes, though - I hope these extra modifications do work the way you intend, and that he doesn't just forego the closet - and throw his stuff on the bathroom floor!

One Devoted Diva, the bedrooms are not going to be in the same place. I will wait until I get farther along with the new plan and post the layout. Thanks
