Orange/Yellow Brick and Exterior Paint Color Advice Please

last modified: 5 years ago

Hello,

We are having quite the time choosing colors for our house and any advice you have would go a long way. What color would you paint this house? The brick is orange/yellow and we are open to painting it. The garage trim will be updated, along with the one window on the second floor with thinner trim. We have a standing seem metal roof in charcoal/slate. Thank you in advance for any thoughts or suggestions you may have.

Can you show a closeup of the brick? I wouldn't paint the brick but pick out a less peachy color than you have now--taupe maybe? Add a red door to link with your nice landscaping. Paint the trim a light taupe. But first we need to see the brick very close up.

One more since you mention roof is slate though if very little is showing the siding color doesn't matter as much.

I would get a more contemporary door and prune the bushes that are obscuring the picture window and the brick on the left side.

I like these colors. I would paint the wood siding and the garage door the same color.

Ashwood Moss also looks good with a rust color door.

The Ashwood Moss with a yellow or orange modern door could look great. The green complements the orange tones but also has some gray, which links with the roof. This isn't Ashwood Moss below, but you can see the depth of a shade like that against the yellow/orange brick.

Do a search on Pinterest for yellow brick house siding paint and see what pops up. Here's one in a sage-y/green/taupe/gray.

I'd paint the brick and with a gray roof you're open to a lot of colors. Take a look at

the before and after. - in reverse -

All super helpful, thank you. I’m leaning towards lighter colors.

Another vote for painting the brick, especially since its an accent and not the whole house. You can use any masonry paint, Behr makes a really nice one. Romabio is expensive and will need touch ups just like any other masonry paint. The siding will take paint well.

ShadyWillowFarm. You should really verify things before saying that it's expensive or will need touch-ups

Behr mason paint covers 125sq ft and costs $30. Now compare it to the Romabio. You'd need more than twice of the behr stuff to cover what the Romabio does.

It's not that expensive. ($49 for a .67 gallon, once mixed you get 1 - 1.5 gallons to work with)

What's really nice about using Romabio is you have 5 days to see if you like it. If not, it washes right off.

once diluted, 1-1.5 gallons of romabio covers 300 sq ft. usually you only need one coat. (and you can try it risk free)

what's good is that Romabio is completely natural, whereas the behr paint is a type of latex. Behr is the one that will need to be touched up. If you read about Romabio, you'll see that it won't:

Because Classico Limewash is highly permeable and breathable, it calcifies to the brick for maximum durability and will continue to patina over time, lasting decades without having to repaint or maintain the finish. Due to the high pH of the paint, it is naturally mold-resistant and has a high UV and fade resistance allowing the color to keep its depth and quality over time.

Looks to me that a gallon would easily cover the front of the house. So unless the brick goes all the way around the house, you would not need more than a gallon. The 5 gallon bucket of Behr masonry paint is $90 and the 5 gallon premium paint is $129. So even less expensive if the whole house needs to be done. And yes, Romabio has really fantastic marketing.

But it’s the homeowners budget and decision, not mine. I did consider Romabio for my house, and rejected it after doing my homework.

I was also comparing apples to apples - a painted finish. The Romabio is difficult to color match, so if the homeowners want an exact match with the siding, they should choose a latex paint. If they want a two toned look and don’t mind spending the money, the Romabio is fine. And because of the whitewashing application process, it’s usually labor intensive so more $$. Bit if it’s just that front bit, probably won’t be that big of a stretch of the dollar.

Shady, I disagree. it's not a difficult application. How is it labor intensive? You mix it up, and brush it on. (you'd do the same w/the behr stuff)

you can lime wash in one coat. It isn't labor intensive. not w/their product. (and you've already seen the pricing)

As for the masonry product (they have two products,,one for lime washing w/set colors) and the other is a masonry paint the you can get tinted to ANY color.

as for the Behr paint, it's about $15 less and it does 200 sq ft less than the Romabio. I was merely commenting on your price comparison. yes it's cheaper, but it doesn't cover as much sq footage. (So really, it's not cheaper than Romabio)

I know this is one coat coverage.

I believe the behr takes more than one coat, no?

I've actually tried this on my own block wall. I didn't care for how it looked. it was very viscous. And, you'd have to use more paint to get the same coverage.

Depending on what type of finish the OP actually wants, would determine what product is best. Personally I'd take a mineral based paint over an acrylic latex.

but this is all moot because OP hasn't come back.

So, whatever. OP, try both samples and see what you like best.
