Purchased $4000 sofa and scared to death! Chairs?

I’ve ordered a non returnable Leather sofa and now am not sure what chairs to put with it to get the light, comfortable stylish room that I want.

Prior to this purchase I had an off white slip covered sofa and I loved the light airy feeling it gave to the room. It hasn’t faired well though and I have to say goodbye and move to leather to save my marriage (JK). My husband of 35 yrs is a mechanic and though he tries, he often sits down b4 he changes from work clothes. We have 3 grandkids, and a white dog. I think leather was a good choice. I don’t want to add more leather, and I need the 2 chairs to have arms and be comfortable for movie watching and hanging out with the kids. I think navy would be stunning but not with white dog hair. I need ideas please on what style and upholstery color I should choose. I love trendy but I want to add that with accessories rather than expensive pieces. Please help. I’m so scared that I made the wrong choice!

Breathe!!!! One second at a time. You did well! it's not returnable, so you work with what you have. Not a problem. It's a pretty classic color, so most everything will go with it. I would call the color beige. What is your style? What color are your walls, floors, ceiling, wall decor, and accessories? What are the colors of the adjacent rooms? We can help you best if you give us pictures of this room.

Furniture is an investment. In my opinion, get classic pieces in classic colors. You can go nuts with the wall decor and accessories!!!!

Thank you Elaine! Having a great look is a huge deal to me. Don’t want blah or fine so I’m just scared I’ll blow it. I’ll send some pics. It’s a very small space and is darkened by the woodwork. We spend most of our time in the livingroom and want our kids to be comfortable watching tv, visiting..and we eat in here a lot.

I don’t want to keep the aqua walls in the dining room. Or the leather recliners. The front door opens into the livingroom.

This is the layout of the livingroom. Pretty difficult because the fireplace wall can’t have furniture on it I don’t think.

Thanks Elaine! These are some things I like. What shape/style chair would you think would go with the sofa and these ideas?

I would get the same shape/style chairs as your couch. I have a very similar type of couch as well. I like your accessories. I have an eclectic mix, and it looks like you have the same. You are on the right path!

Your house is lovely. First I'd get rid of the dresser by the front door. It appears that you're trying to create a separate entry area but it isn't working with that piece. Instead get a taller narrow piece of furniture (perhaps a vintage or rattan piece) and put it on the short wall between the front door and the dining room and put a tray on it for keys, mail, etc. Paint your dining room a light sage green which would look good with your drapes (which I love, by the way!). I'd like to see visually lighter chair shapes in the living room. Those recliners are overwhelming for the space. I'd also suggest staying away from gray. Either paint or replace your coffee and end tables in an off white or cream color and get different bigger lamps. Good luck!

i feel pretty limited by the chair options that I can see in person in Spokane. Any suggestions for online ordering chairs when you’re not sure if your beige is warm or cold tones? Any chair examples of chair shapes that would work and be comfy for reading and watching tv?

Home Decorators Collection Natural Linen Chair $623. Anyone know anything about this company’s products.?

Wait until you have your new sofa in place. Then look at chairs in a similar squared style that have a performance fabric in a medium to dark color, or even wood arms to be more durable. Spokane has plenty of furniture stores. Take the leather sample with you. I think it's important to sit in the chairs for comfort rather than buying online for a living area. It's also easier to check quality in person.

That couch looks amazing! I agree if you can get rid of that chest of drawers it would free up space and put the two chairs facing the fireplace. I think two wooden arm chairs would look great or velvet club chairs. I’ll attach photos! If you have trouble finding navy chairs, you could do all neutrals with a navy rug and or paint that dining room navy since you want to paint it!!

Anything rug upholstered will be a perfect match…this one is from anthropologie.

Also try the Sundance catalog…anything Robert Redford likes, I like.

A four thousand dollar may turn its nose up at a Costco chair.

Oh, no! I hear screams of protest! “You don’t need to spend thousands on a chair….."

Yes, you need to buy a quality piece to compliment your sofa investment. No “hacking”.

I really do like your leather recliners and think they might look perfect with your sofa....with the money saved on the chairs, you could hire a painter to paint the walls in this room, but have Houzzers help you decide on accessories! Win/Win.

So remove all the stuff from the room except the sofa and the chairs, take pictures of all four walls, and post again...you made great choices so far! Everyone has buyers remorse for awhile, totally normal.....just breathe and move on to the next thing; anxiety can prevent you from seeing the whole room and envisioning what you want.

    Inspiration Room

For example, dark wood trim, white walls, can lights in the ceiling, neutral sofa, dark chairs and light chairs, modern lamps.....oh the possibilities......and very very very little accessories.

Thank you all so much for your input! It helps so much!

I do like the look of the wooden arm chairs but I really would like to be able to cozy up and read in them. I also have a white dog whose hair would make me insane on navy velvet.

I may be able to go with navy though with a blue tweed-like fabric or something not solid blue. If not blue, probably a warm natural linen color.

I really like the shape of the Robert Redford chair in the 2nd pic but I think the print might limit me too much to that style. Do you think the pottery barn chairs of that style and a performance fabric would be a good look?

Thanks also for the reminder that it might be wise to wait to see it in person before I decide. ..and to take everything out of there and take pics (husband loves moving furniture). 😩

I’m curious as to what brand of leather sofa you bought, and where you purchased it. It is so beautiful. I have a similar setup and am also looking for new l room furniture. We even have a similar dark-colored recliner. Thank you!

Agree, wait for the sofa to arrive and see how much room you have. Perhaps you could

have the sofa face the fireplace and put the brown recliner where the sofa is now.

The end table is quite big, do you have a smaller one you could use?

I'm surprised your hubby uses the sofa and not the recliner. Usually the guys

    go for recliner.

Hi Kim, it’s a comfort design sofa called the Manhattan II. I ordered it online after a lot of research into the company. LeatherFurniture-USA.. stilled scared though. It’s comes around the 15th of this month! I’ll post pics when it gets here. It was over $5k to go with a local furniture company, but I got to see it up close.

    Now I need a 10 x 14 rug. Any thoughts?

Angel, sadly there isn’t enough room to have the sofa face the fireplace. Weird about hubby not sitting in the old recliners. I am moving all the end tables, lamps, etc out of the room

It looks like you have plenty of room to have the sofa face the fireplace. It's back would be a natural divider to your entryway. Then two chairs can go on the wall where you currently have your sofa, facing the tv and the windows. I would at least try that when your new furniture comes in. Wait on the rug until you have the sofa, chairs, and tables in place.

I love the look of that leather sofa!

Are you happy with the quality and comfort level? Is it holding up well?

Would love to hear your thoughts on it.

    10x14 rug? are you sure?

If that's the size of this rug, you need to go smaller.

how about an 8x10 or 9x11?
