It would help if you could bump out the toe kick, as furniture and built-in bookcases and such don't usually have a toe kick. Then if you add matching wood side pieces and a "backsplash" connecting the uppers to the lowers, you could give more of the appearance of a buffet with a hutch; decorative brackets might also work on the the sides, a la a baker's rack. It might work better with a shorter stretch.

Consider keeping the bottom cabinets and replacing the uppers with bookcase shelves. I recently used Ikea units to make a whole wall built in and they are inexpensive, easy to make and give a custom look with trim.
