Escape from the pandemic! with rose pictures

It was a crazy spring with no time to post in the roses forum. As a mom of two elementary school-aged children (I work full time as well), everything went sideways in mid March. Now that we are into the hot and lazier days of summer, I have some time to share some pics of my roses! Hope you enjoy. Will continue in the comments.

Alfred Colomb (hybrid perpetual, 1865) Repeats frequently

Alliance Franco-Russe (1899, tea) Blooms very frequently

Archduke Charles after the rain

Barock (climber, Tantau). This was a bareroot that was 2nd grade from Palatine ($10!). Planted in November and is 4 foot tall now with beautiful blooms.

Mme. Joseph Bonnaire (early hybrid tea)

Break o Day (hybrid tea 1939)

Chic (floribunda 1953)

Wonderful pics, I espcially enjoy seeing the early and mid century HTs, many rarely seen today, and some looking decidedly back in style.

Kathy - Oh my goodness!!!! Smokey took my breath away...the color is surreal!!! What do you think about Kordes Perfecta? (fragrance and bloomability). I really, really enjoyed looking at your roses...so many that epitomize the grandeur of the OGRs!!!

Berry - your WS2000 is superb!!! The color, shape and the composition of the picture are amazing!!!!

Wonderful images! Thank you! You know the pictures are good when you have people like me looking at the photos and thinking -- "oh! I never thought about that one, but I REALLY ought to put it on my list for next year!" :)

KathyC I love your roses. Some of these I have not heard of before Chic, Barock.... You stated you are in zone 10. May I ask you where you live. I too live in Zone 10.... very hot and humid.... in South Florida. I was just wondering how some of your beauties that I haven't heard of might hold up in my climate.

Thank you for sharing your pictures.

Kathy C (and others who've been posting photos): Thank you for posting this. We've got such oppressive heat here (upper 90s with very high humidity) that I can hardly linger by my plants in the yard without feeling smacked down. That combined with the unending stress of reduced work hours and school starts that are either ill thought-out or very complicated (I've got one in college, one in public high school, and a husband who teaches college) have left me bedraggled. This post and the lovely photos are a real respite and a reminder that the roses will keep blooming in their beautiful way, no matter the worries of the world. They provide sustenance to so many of us. Thanks again!

Kathy -- A salute to you and to your roses ... and to you again, for holding things together in a bad time.

I keep saying -- without roses and dogs, I'd fall into despair.

Wow, thank you so much everyone. Your comments are so kind! I'm overwhelmed!

thank you @User for your beautiful pictures! I have Sidonie on my list--can you tell me more about it?

Thank you @damask_rose_zone9b, we are all safe and healthy and I hope you and your family are as well. I think you need Purple Lodge! It's a great rose!

@RedBird_7a EastTN, completely understand where you are coming from!! My kids really struggled with the shutdown. They both have some aspect of educational accommodation they need and I worked with them in the day, tried to make my work meetings and then made up work hours at night. My husband is "essential" and had to go into work... it was worrying and exhausting. I am so glad my pictures brought some joy to you! hang in there!!

@BenT (NorCal 9B Sunset 14) I used to have a whole lot of early HTs and some pernetianas that sadly did not enjoy our heat. I do have left Fred Howard, Radiance and a few more oldies I got from Vintage Gardens before it closed down. I'll have to post more pics!

@rosecanadian Kordes Perfecta is tall and for a HT seems inclined to bloom a lot. The colors stay true and does not look bleached out or mottled as it ages. Nice scent! I really like it. I can see it from my kitchen window and it looks very elegant mixing with blue and purple annuals next to it.

@Lilyfinch z9a Murrieta Ca Barock really seems to want to be large. I had to go on the Russian site rosebook.ru to see enough pictures of it to understand it. here are some links I researched--just ask the browser to translate to english. Even with winter die back in Russia, it is quite vigorous. I gave it about a 5 foot wide space along a 7 foot high fence. http://www.rosebook.ru/roses/gallery/large-flowered-climber/barock/123/

@sharon2079 I am in Southern California about 15 miles inland from the coast. It is hot here as I am in the foothills, but not humid-- we are very very dry and I have a small amount of blackspot on the hybrid perpetuals only. Before them, I had zero blackspot in my garden for the 15 years I have grown roses!

@jerijen thank you so much for your kind comments. I agree with you. I must have worn out a track in my yard checking on all my beauties when I needed a break from, well, everything. Roses and gardening truly are therapeutic!

thanks again for the kind comments, they really brought a smile to my face!

Kathy - thanks for the info on Kordes Perfecta...I guess I should have got it this year. Dang. :) Oh, and I used to go to that website, and then I couldn't remember the name of it. Thanks!

Kathy- Sidonie is a VERY pretty rose ; the buds start out the most intense silky pink of any rose, like a 1950's lipstick, with a beautiful set of head feathers. Sometimes the open blooms are cartoon flower shaped like Portland from Glendora, sometimes goblet, but many open up in unusual lopsided shapes , so quaint an old rose with a button eye.

It is said to be salmon pink, but I view Sidonie closer to a solid medium pink, fading slightly as the petals drop. Perfume is very strong at times , smells like a floral laundry soap to me.

Super healthy growth here in Pacific Northwest zone 5, not a speck of disease even though it sits in the shade most of the day. That aspect alone makes it outstanding for a no spray garden.

    In it'

s Spring flush the number of roses came in fast and generously heavy. The second flush is starting , buds appear not as numerous, time will tell.

In it's second year the short bush was low to the ground and spread out " floppy " but i trimmed the low outside branches, now the middle ones are growing straight up, about two and a half feet tall. Doesn't seem too mind pruning at all. Mine has lots of little pokey thorns.

Sidonie has really captured my affection , definitely a keeper

    rosecanadian,

I like Rosie OK but I don't think she will become a permanent resident in my pot.

I want to have about 3 large permanent pots on my deck with 3 blooming machines - so I can see them from the kitchen which is towering above the deck. Even those 3 blooms she now has make for a nice view, but I need a whole lot more than that.

    Quite prone to BS too.

I am now thinking Marmalade Skies or something over-the-top bloomy, eye-catching and very resistant to disease. For more impact, I'd probably need 3 of the same in the 3 pots but it's so hard to commit so deeply to one variety in a spot.

    Severe - yes, I agree...that would be hard...I couldn't do it. LOL
