Looking for Blue and White Something for Bedroom Wall

last modified: 5 years ago

This is for a guest bedroom that my mother uses. It’s a small room but has an en suite bathroom and three nice windows that overlook the golf course. There are two twin beds with distressed White shutter type headboards. The chest of drawers between the bed was from my daughter‘s handpainted childhood furniture. The wall color is SW Moomist.. There is a seven foot long corridor into the room (that passes by the bathroom) where I have pastels of our three kids. There is a small antique wicker desk and chair painted a very pale pink.

I have ordered these sheets and bed skirts (below) from Annie Selke; they are a thin white 100% cotton (made in India if that helps you visualize the type of fabric) edged with a very small ruffle. In a stroke of dumb luck I came upon curtain panels in what looks to be identical fabric with one tiny ruffle at the seam of the rod pocket and three rows of the same small ruffle at the bottom of the panels.

This all cotton quilt in blue is also on order. One pillow will be a quilt sham and the other will wear the case from the sheet set. Now for the question!

Iam looking for something to hang above the dresser. In our old house the bedskirts were pink and green and the duvets were pink and white buffalo check. I used four silhouettes of our dogs matted in pink and green. I could have these re-matted but would rather use something else. I have no idea where to even start except that I know I want to use a blue and white scheme. Mynatural I clinatio to use blue and white plates but I would love something unusual. No idea is too “out there” to consider.

Sheets. (Not the duvet cover tho)

Bedskirt

Quilt and sham

Bedroom as it is now. These duvet covers did not work, blue was almost navy. Despite the picture looking very pink, the chest has a great deal of blue. Pay no attention to bedskirts which were from several redecoratings ago. Dogs above chest must go. Just realized I cannot have the green removed as it’s not a mat, it’s the background.

This is a photograph of two bluebirds that I could purchase in a size 24” x 24”, and frame however I want. The blues might be wrong (?) but I like the idea as there are flocks of birds —and bluebirds— flying by those windows. I like botanical prints also but i want something fresh looking, iykwim, maybe a modern version of a flower print.

Actually trying to distract myself from worry, DH has another surgery tomorrow and I cannot sleep.

The room feels soft and cozy to me, so I think a family heirloom of some sort would be nice there or something that looks like one...I'm thinking of maybe a framed baby's christening gown or dress, or a framed doily. Or maybe silhouettes of children/grandchildren instead of dogs. No one says silhouettes have to be black and white....almost something like jasperware...

If I'm thinking of something nontraditional to frame that might include a color blue, I'm thinking of a US highway map...which often has red lines too...maybe showing some place special to her...where she was born, where she married...where you grew up...

Or one thing I've always wanted to do was making a grouping of covers from the New Yorker magazine as they are always so well done...could be selected with the colors in your room in mind.

I saw a bunch of lovely things at Ballard. I really love the third one I am posting, it reminds me of my mother.

I hope this post doesn’t disappear or you do not get two.

Anyway, maybe some interesting shelving painted to your liking.

Or, there are some very cool panels out there to wall mount.

    Or, just hit Ballards

I hope all goes well with your husband today Kswl!

I love the Drew Barrymore print! I also kinda long to see a little touch of gingham in this room. I know that's a rather old-fashioned thing, but to me it has always felt fresh; has always reminded me of childhood and early summer and joy.

I love that first Ballard print, localeater. So soft and adds a bit of brightness without being ott.

kswl, thinking of you today. I hope your DH’s procedure is successful and that you both will rest easy when this is over.

Hoping all went well today with your husband’s surgery.

Because the nightstand is painted, I would keep it simple like you did with the dog prints. I like the idea of a shelf with items your mother enjoys displayed or a simple print or watercolor —-maybe a house you mother lived in or a favorite vacation place?

Kswl, would you ever want to do another wallpaper behind the beds?

DH is still in surgery and I am in a waiting room. Everything is going fine so I am trying to breathe deeply and not worry too much.

Ive looked in several times and love all these suggestions! jterrilynn, i adore that pagoda shelf and wish it did not fight with the shutter headboard vibe I already have going on. If I was designing a room from scratch that would be a great piece to start with!

I did think about wallpaper for the whole room but decided to paper the bathroom instead . Love the prints and the pressed , framed flowers Idea. my mother and I both adore blue hydrangeas, so that is a great possibility.

The painted motif on that chest of drawers is just so bossy I agree with those who advised keeping it as simple as possible. I have ordered this mirror from Ballard’s to check the color; if it works I think both the size (30” x 24”) and style will work really well.

The mirror is wood and apparently the paint is not completely opaque. I even thought, if I did not love the

color, I could have a decorative painter do a soft blue and white gingham on that surface. Ida, I am a huge gingham fan and in fact have two navy and white gingham Occasional chairs In the main living area. And the same gingham along the bottom edge of the host and hostess parsons chairs in that shame room. Best of all, this $500 mirror was on sale for $415, and I used a $100 rewards certificate on the purchase.

So you see I have not been idly waiting :). The room also has a long wall opposite the windows and I am already dreaming of pressed flowers.... jinx I would love to see your work!

Happy to hear everything is going smoothly for your DH. I sure hope that mirror works because it looks just about perfect! I had several options to share but none seemed strong enough to work with that lovely chest.

Fingers crossed for you and your DH and that this mirror is just the thing.

Rather than dishes or plates, how about some woven baskets ... I kind of like the extra texture they provide and the hand craftedness.

Annie I love that basket and the strong graphic statement it makes!

Olychick, autocorrect must be taking over my keyboard! I have a couple of rooms that could easily be shame rooms, lol, but did not think Siri knew that.

I do the pressed florals but I don't believe I can share my work here myself (I think my prior message was flagged as self-promoting). I'll try in another post, but if it doesn't appear or is removed, feel free to message me.

I don’t know that this will go thru, but this is the before/after pressing of a blue hydrangea from a bridal bouquet. The second was as the flowers came out of the press—they’re not mounted or framed yet at that point. I can show you privately the finished mounting and what that entails, but it’s part of a collection for the bride and I don’t want to post it publicly. But this below gives you an idea. It’s really lovely and takes on a vintage patina over time.

Mtn, I found that shelf in my search on a pin.

    https://www.pinterest.com/pin/557250153875140865/?amp_client_id=jkMhJd9efzZV6DKRHjm2BsC73RyRjttkNPGp2ePClTvPgnQS8Mp1uLWF9y1bCbeb&mweb_unauth_id=6f62b6e8&amp_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.pinterest.com%2Famp%2Fpin%2F189432728048808720%2F

There are a few very similar in white. I think that particular one was maybe customized by taking the back off and painting the green. Or, maybe not but I couldn’t kind it anywhere else. My original search was chinoiserie wall shelves. I love the green!!!

Kswl, glad your husband is out of the operation and doing well. The lead up to these things is often the worst part. Hopefully you will sleep well tonight 😌

Festhers, what a beautiful flower and how lovely to be able to preserve it like that. Will those small bracts retain any of the blue when they are fully dried?

DH getting up on a walker for a few moments during the day. We are both optimistic; he has another surgery scheduled in about four weeks, so I am trying to pace myself.

Jtlynn that cabinet reminds me of the decorative furniture Gump’s used to sell.

Hoping for a Swift healing for your DH and a whole bucket full of relief for you.

I was thinking of a quilt or blanket hung above the bed. A childhood one would be great. Or even one that looks like it could have being a child's would work.

Kswl, in the second photo, they were fully dried. That project was 3 years ago, and the bride has since sent me photos and the blue is still there. I use acid-free mounting materials and UV-protectant glass on projects, which helps. But real pressed florals are organic material, and a natural fading occurs over time. If it's important to the customer that the color remain and resists fading, I add color. It's just a matter of preference in how the florals age. There are herbarium collections from the 1800s that are today lovely, vintage pieces. In your situation, because the blue is an integral part of the decor, I would add it, just to be sure.

He is doing better, we are eight days out from surgery and he needs the walker less than he did. Back to the dr tomorrow, and another surgery in a couple of weeks. If I take the time to stop and think about it all, these last 18 months have been really terrible, and the year before that wasn’t much better. But it’s funny, you know? We have still lived our lives, bought a new house, sold our old one, sold our office building, MOVED, bought a car, switched all our insurance.....so many of the everyday things compressed in between DHs surgeries. And when I say “we” did it I really mean I did. I’m not complaining—I’m grateful—but just feel the enormity of what has happened and been done over the past few years. It’s little wonder I sometimes forget to take my pills at night. But we are here and all mostly in one piece and surviving just like everybody else. For a long time I could not even have imagined i would be at a point at which I could worry about finding something for a bedroom wall. Sometimes thinking about the small things makes you realize how many big things you have had to manage to get there. Thank you all very much for your concern, I appreciate it and all of you.

This question below was a tweet a few weeks ago.

Can we all agree that in 2015 not a single person correctly answered the question "where do you see yourself in 5 years time?"

Obviously, it's a reference to Covid, but applies to most everything. Sometimes, focusing on the small stuff that we can control helps us deal with the bigger issues that we cannot.
