Roof shingles/underlayment off gassing?

Was wondering if anyone had any info on roof shingles or underlayment off gassing. The garage at the spot I rent has shingles/underlayment on top of some old cedar shakes which act as the ceiling. The old shakes look like they have plenty of holes and rotted spots.

Is it possible for the shingles/underlayment to off gas an intense asphalt almost Smokey odor into the garage to the point where it could make everything in there smell like it? I have a smell that attaches to my hair and clothes every time I go in there and it seems worse with hot weather.

There isn’t any sort of vent up on the roof either. No idea if the roofing is newer - It has to be at least 4 months old though - but has anyone heard of an off gassing that permeates belongings etc? is it possible to be a heavy odor like that even 4 months or more later?
