Is it okay to use different metal finishes throughout the house? Which color door hardware would be most app
Comments (1)At a minimum all on one floor should match except kitchen. This makes for a coherent look This also makes it esay to move lamps from one room to another....See MoreWhat size floor tile have you used throughout your home?
Comments (15)Along with the extra need for the "true" subfloor is the fact that rectangular tiles, especially this size, tend to crown or twist a bit during production, this can become a problem when installing due to variances in tile to tile, most tile manufactures suggest you install in a running brick patten to help alleviate some of the differences and have at least a 1/4" grout joint to float the irregularities out. I ran into this problem on the last install I did. It was a modular home, and the house where they joined the two halves was not perfectly flush and the resulting install was near impossible, had to sort through many tiles to match, and ultimately had to go back and replace half a dozen that were noticeably off after grouting. The install took at least an extra 15% of time of typical tile install. Keep this in mind when shopping. Another option is to go with a tile design with irregular edges an install with three or four different sizes/shapes in pattern, to achieve an ashler slate design or irregular stone look....See MoreWhat flooring to use with "orange" pine woodwork throughout the house?
Comments (19)Take a cabinet door off and go to a flooring showroom. The cabinets will reflect some of the surrounding color, and will appear to change color as a result. Colors you may rule out might actually work if everything blends well. Those that suggest almost black or anthracite or even white are making the assumption that you love your cabinet color so much that you don't want to alter the look of the cabinet at all - even with nothing more than reflected light. People tend to accessorize with silver and black because "it goes with everything" - when the truth is silver reflects everything, and black reflects some (if glossy) or nothing (if flat) - but neither change the tone of the primary color of the setting (or outfit). Accessorizing or complementing one color with another takes nothing more than trial and error. It's like wine. Expensive or cheap doesn't matter, if you don't like it!...See Moreshould i use all the same type of ceiling fans throughout home?
Comments (11)I love ceiling fans! for their functional purpose. I just don't think of them as a decorative item. Being on the ceiling, (sometimes along with HVAC vents) they seem to clutter the ceiling if they're fancy or ornate in any way. Sort of like wall switch plates, they serve a functional purpose, but IMO should be painted the same color as the wall, or blend into a kitchen backsplash, to be visually non-obtrusive. And overhead lighting, unless it's a chandelier or pendants over an island for example, is usually not mood enhancing or flattering to the room. Mirrors and lighting fixtures are very decorative elements and of course usually also functional. It's true, it is a matter of personal taste. Speaking of porch ceiling fans, love them!...See MoreInspired Closets of Greater Boston
