I need some advice on updates in my great room

last modified: 4 years ago

I would like a new area rug that is more transitional. What to put above my kitchen cabinets that is more transitional. I know I need less stuff up there. #3 picture is before blue side panels, which I brought in because my home is so brown. What would look good above the cabinet in family room?

I keep going back to this, more ethnic. Makes drapes pop. Southwest abstract art

One more favor, can you put the 2nd from the last in my pic with blue side panels?🙄 technically challenged.

    Thanks for all your help!!

Maybe more blue? I have blue side panels

I really like the wayfair moseley.. abstract and subdued and won't be dramatic, which I like. seems more in line with your inspiration pics to me.

But you say he only wants dark blue... no navy, no lighter blues... You refer to what he is looking for as a ‘true blue’ - and TBH I don’t know what that is + it is confusing... And I am generally not so easily confused!

Plus, in the inspiration pics that you posted - the ones from magazine - it looks like rug(s) might be grey... or to that effect; and you say he doesn’t like grey... So... ???

The rug you refer to as ‘’Southwest abstract art’’ rug, above, does look good in visual of your room. Other one looks good, too - not sure if that is the Ivory Multi rug I posted... but I agree w/ Theresa, it is a more traditional look.

I’ll be happy to put second from last rug into room view with your blue curtains. Are you referring to the very contemporary rug, with dark blue background?

Here are some examples of neutral rugs and furnishings providing a backdrop for color in art, accessories, etc.

I haven’t been getting notifications so I am catching up. My thoughts right now are if you (hubby) are getting some contemporary art for this very traditional space, you need to get that first. If art is bold, rug will need to be quiet. And visa versa. Not sure where this contemporary art will hang? A contemporary coffee table will also be needed. Among other things. Is that his plan?

Sorry I’m all over the place, and not really explaining very well. This is the blue that is in my chair and side panels. I want to pick up this color. When a say neutral I really didn’t mean color (sorry). I mean a subtle print that lends itself to different directions. Actually we like a blend of blue with some brown or tan. We like colorful art contemporary, or abstract but still fits in with our transitional look. Like pic below.

Thanks for all your help it is a process for me!!

i think the bottom up blinds behind Your sofa could offer a chance for a pop of your blue or camel colors. I struggled a long time choosing my new blinds and went way out of my comfort zone with navy blue cellular shades and love them. The two colors I posted below seem close to what you are looking at

edit. Nevermind I see you added blue panels to those windows

I like the rustic look of the living room table, but more also the modern legs

Yes, think the rug should be quiet, so I can jazz up with art, accessories, pillows @Flo Mangan but want blues in the area rug, otherwise my house looks so brown/beige and I would just go without..,and have my boring carpet. Probably a square table would look good between couches? Really don’t have that many walls for art, but what I would love to add is a splash of color in pictures on each side of window with panels. So the muted or quiet blue area rug is what I’m looking for.

I understand. It’s always a ”process” where design is concerned. I know it is for me... There is always so much to learn.

I‘m happy to help. And thank you for your kind words. :)

So you still want a blue rug? I will see what I can find.

@Carol Shuss I agree with the suggestion of choosing your art first. That will allow you to choose a rug that doesn’t distract from it. Not a pro, but imho, you might keep your furniture traditional/transitional and limit the art to contemporary. The art style does not need to be the same style as your other furnishings. In my own experience, I’ve always mixed art styles. But this time, I’m trying for that more eclectic look in my furnishings, and oh my, it is so much harder for me. Thank goodness for Houzz! Still, my process is so slow.

@eschism Your color scheme might help inform Carol's decision. I recognize your room--it has been one of my favorite threads to follow--but I forgot the name of your dilemma. It looks like you’ve made some changes since I last saw it. Will you share it here, please? (Hope that is okay, Carol. Thanks.)

I like the Wayfair Mosley High/low Blue... doesn’t seem too busy. I think it I could work around it with accessories. I usually check Art.com. Any input?

No way of putting it in my room.

You're welcome @freedomplace1! I just downloaded them and posted them here-I thought it would make it easier to compare. Here are the last two you suggested as well.

I actually like the first one a lot. It brings in the blue but is simple enough not to compete with any artwork. It would work with landscapes, florals, abstract or anything Carol might like.

@katinparadise - Thank you for putting up the other two rugs, also. I really appreciate it!

And thank you for your thoughts and input re: this rug. I agree with you, and I think this rug might also be my personal pick from the ones I’ve posted.

I agree with you that this rug is simple enough to not get in the way of any art choice, while still bringing in the blue. 👌

Also, OP requested dark blue, and the blue here appears to be dark enough. I also think this rug brings in the blue in a substantial yet understated way - which I believe works for this space. And I think the predominance of beige/tan tones works well with carpet and general color scheme of the room. Plus, this type of jute rug offers a look and feel that is very contemporary, as well as having a sort of casualness - and I think this combination helps to downplay the very traditional/formal feel of the space - while the styling on this particular rug is classic enough so as not to seem out of place.

So, anyway... that is my rug analysis 101. :)

    Thanks, again. 🙏

The rug is quieter tone of the art. I think that is look you need, if stronger colors in art. While the bordered rug is nice the two borders will fit under sofas and plain part kind of blends with carpet. So my preference is for muted tones of colors in art you select. I am hunting for a piece of art I love that has your colors. I’ll post when I find it if it is still available.

@katinparadise - I love this pic from customer review.

Blends too much with carpet underneath. Nice look though

I vote for nothing above kitchen cabinets. No need to call attention up there.

Looks good, I have blue panels on windows ... some how that picture got lost

    Here is another pic

I think the blue panels are way too high of a contrast in the room; would you consider softening the windows with a blue, white, beige geometric print, but with lined panels to add the darkness you requested for the room? ....another timeless look, is a bamboo styled room darkening or regular shades in the windows in a mid shade relates to the floor color?

  • PRO

Oh. I didn’t realize you had panels there. I agree with Susan the panels are pulling the eye to them and minimizing your art and overall room. A neutral panel would be better if you are going to put a distinctive rug and art in the room.

The panels are relatively new in the last year, cannot change them

  • PRO

Ok. No problem. I think I would concentrate on art and larger coffee table and see then if you need layered rug.

So since heavy blue color on windows, do you think rug is too much or blue rug would bring the eye down

  • PRO

It will be more about art and coffee table. A large coffee table styled well will be big point of interest. You need enough interest in the rug to distinguish it from carpeting but subtle enough to be background support tying everything together.
