What size tv over linear fireplace

If I put in

a 48” linear fireplace, can you have a 65” or 70“ tv over it? It will be this style

We have a 65" tv over a 50" linear fireplace and it looks great. The difference is that we have a 78" wide (10" tall) mantle between them so visually you aren't comparing the fireplace and tv, rather the mantle divides the space and you visually compare the tv to the mantle, and the mantle to the fireplace. The top of the mantle is about 48" from the floor and we find the height of the tv comfortable for us.

No better options for placement? Much nicer to have art over a fireplace...

Otherwise, I guess I wouldn't want the TV to be wider than the firebox opening, so get the horizontal measurement rather than the diagonal for the set...

IMO no to that size over a small FP. The one you show is neither 48” fire box or space for 70” TV. I have to agree TV over a FP is my last choice .Linear FPs are better for this purpose but you still need to make it look right . The easiest is just drwa the wall with the FP size and then play with different size TVs you will notice right away that the TV looks best when the same or smaller that the firebox.

As long as your fireplace vents directly out the side and not up through a chimney then there should be no issue with hanging a TV above the fireplace.

So how do you plan to have the mantle lowered? My understanding of mantles is that they sit on top of the brick, especially in a situation like yours. Will you remove a couple of rows or brick? Are you having this custom built?

Anne's idea of removing the mantle is good advice, since you wouldn't be able to put anything on it anyway, because that would obstruct the view on the TV. If a large TV is important to you and you watch enough of it, than it is not uncommon for people to hang a TV that is larger than the fireplace. But although many people have TV screens that are bigger than their fireplace, they usually have a bigger wall of stone too. In your case you do not have much extra space. So indeed, that might look a bit too 'heavy'. What I would do in your case is to cut out two pieces of cardboard and make them black, one in each size of the TV. So you can see for yourself if a bigger one is okay for you on this particular spot.

IMO this is anew build so design the space to allow for the TV to go elsewhere IMO above a FP is never a good place . I like a FP to actully be in a nother space like a LR when you have 2 spaces like aFR and a LR. Next best is the TV beside the FP I have no idea about your floor plan so maybe share that.Keep in mind linear fireplaces are a contemporary style so if that is your style then these ideas will work to let you have both and the last one a bit more traditional

I prefer the tv over the fireplace for certain. I’m just concerned my husband is thinking of having a huge tv and I need to order a larger fireplace

Sorry I see your mantle dimensions now. I’d love a photo😊 We have a tv over a fireplace in another room and have had no trouble with it. This mantle is a flat front and I’m trying to get the dimensions correct. TIA

Our ceiling is vaulted to 13' and the peak of the vault is above the fireplace (you just can't see it in the picture.) For reference, the bookshelves on each side are about 8' tall, plus a few inches for the crown moulding. The mantle is 78" wide, the fireplace is 50" wide, and the 65" tv is about 58" wide.
