How to make my kitchen look more upmarket

I have never really loved my kitchen. I am wanting to make it look less basic/give it some wow, without changing the cabinets because that is too expensive. I will replace the benchtop and sink because they are getting quite shabby. Was thinking light again with a marble swirl after a google search of similar kitchens. Also considering changing the glass splashback to tiles. I have always loved herringbone pattern. I suppose changing the lighting is an option too if it would make a significant difference. I don't dislike the current light fitting. I would love to know what you think of my ideas or what you would do it it was you. Thanks in advance. (The overall look of the outside of my house is medditeranean, cream plaster with terracotta roof, if that is relevant for style).

The cabinets are chocolate brown melamine.

I honestly think that changing the light fixture would be so impactful on changing it up. I think your suggestions sound good- but I think the light is one of the simpler things to change and it would really yield results. I can't tell if it is over the sink peninsula or is it centered over the floor area?

Consider a twosome or theeesome of pendants over the peninsula . It will pull the visuals forward as the side and back walls have function aspects for the most part . Tearing out the tile around the hood may not be needed. On the wall above the peninsula you show a round mirror??? Try more impactful art or a shelf or two w under brackets that are stylIsh . Obviously stools w backs will put in some detail. The peninsula is great in regards size and seating . I’d focus on that area first.

Yes to light fixture(s)! It's a very modern, even severe kitchen and the chandelier is from a different, country universe. (Ditto clock)

I think your idea to install tile will definitely add interest and a bit of needed texture to this space.

The current light fixture is centered over the benchtop. There are three small lights (2 not currently working) centered over the floor area. Loving all the suggestions. Thank you.
