New French Country Shabby Chic room! Help: BIG EMPTY WALL IN DINING!

last modified: 5 years ago

Hello! I'm remodeling a few rooms. What once was a lego playroom is now a living room in progress. I'm also remodeling the entryway to blend better with the new room. Lots going on, I still have to paint the used piano I picked up on Facebook. I don't think the area rug in front of the doorway is large enough but I'm unsure what size I should get. The area is about 48" x 60" which I can't find this size in a color that matches the new stair runner. Wondering, if I get a bigger rug is it okay for the console feet to go on it? Also, not sure what color to paint the piano and the white side table? Thanks for any input!

This will show you around the room better. Disregard the chair by the piano, its extra from dining room with no where to go right now.

Not sure where to place chair when it arrives. Its not this white lol but something similar to this.

I’d get a 4x6 rug and suggest chalk painting the chest black, centre mirror and try one you had on floor and using less accessories

I wouldn’t paint the piano but add more interest/ color with a collage. Need some pop of color

I’d remove the metal stand and add a floor lamp

Also consider geometric pillows so room is not overly feminine

Could also chalk paint another piece in living room for contrast and to tie in with hall table

I really like the direction you want to go with French country shabby chic. you are well on your way, i especially like your sweet coffee table. you might want to consider bringing in some floral patterns in maybe some pillows. I agree a larger, rectangular rug in the entry will work a bit better. I think the placement plan for the new chair is perfect. for the piano color, i think a worn French blue paint color or a soft green would look great, maybe use chalk paint. I might also consider bringing some additional blue, turquoise or green into your living room rug, maybe layering some rugs... a few inspiration pics

    Are you for some rearranging?

    1. Raise the curtain rods closer to ceiling and wider than the window

    2. Place sofa on window wall

    3. Piano on sofa wall

    4. New chair facing sofa on angle in corner where piano is now

    5. Remove shelf that is beside closet door

    6. white cabinet with a lamp beside chair

You have too many small items in the room and the sconces are going to be too small near that large mirror. I see the wiring and it looks to be too far from the mirror

Theresa I love the idea of bringing in some florals! I was thinking about adding a a very pale aqua. Not sure how to tho without just throwing pillows on the sofa.

Are you for some rearranging? Possibly

    1. Raise the curtain rods closer to ceiling and wider than the window - only thing is they are too short if I go any higher, they go past the sides right now about 4-5 inches, is that enough?

    2. Place sofa on window wall -- I considered it but it faces the bathroom and it looked pretty bad anyway,, nobody liked it there

    3. Piano on sofa wall -

    4. New chair facing sofa on angle in corner where piano is now

    5. Remove shelf that is beside closet door - I was thinking the shelf may need to go!

    6. white cabinet with a lamp beside chair

You have too many small items in the room and the sconces are going to be too small near that large mirror. I see the wiring and it looks to be too far from the mirror -

The wiring is old from previous sconces, I'm moving it down. But you think they will be too small? Should I try a smaller mirror there and move them in too?

Such a great start! Your little boy is sooooo cute!

I agree with above, the first thing that jumps out at you is the mirror above the sofa. I would replace that with a floral art. Love the sconces! add them next to the art.

Love the area rug and painting the foyer chest black that @Maureen suggested.

    njmomma thank you!

I like the idea of floral art, it is missing some floral fabrics that add to the shabby look. The chest in the entryway was just painted blush. I have wanted a blush piece foreverrrr lol. What about painting the piano black tho? I'm still not sure what color I want to paint it but I def want to paint it.

Maureen thanks for your reply. We just painted the entryway cabinet blush which I have wanted a blush piece foreverrrr. As I mentioned above, what about painting the piano black? OR grey?

I'm also torn on which mirror should go over the piece in the entryway, I'm not sure about proportions, its pretty tall. I can post pics of both.

would like to see the other mirror above the entry console.

maybe bring some blue into a rug and then you will have additional blue throughout the room.

If you search painted pianos on Pinterest it may help you decide.

Here’s a pretty blush rug for the hall

this may be a crazy idea, but how about layering the shorter mirror in front of the tall one, lean them both, shabby chic is all about layering so maybe try and see.

heres a concept with the blue rug and floral pillows

So pretty!!! I would avoid white fabrics that may not hold up if a backpack gets slung on it, or a kid waiting for a ride is hanging by the door. Kids can’t help being a little messy or grubby, which you probably know!!

Love the florals! I'm going to try the mirrors layered to see how it looks.

Have you heard of Rachel Ashwell, Shabby Chic? Look on the internet for her older images too. She's been around 30yrs. Light, bright, floral fabrics, floral plates, painted furniture (doesn't have to be chippy), candles, vases of flowers. Ornate gilt or Venetian mirrors.

Hi Allison - thanks for your reply! I love Rachel Ashwell designs, especially the fabrics.

Funny you mentioned mirrors, I was just about to post a pic of all the mirrors I have purchased in the past month, unsure of where to use them. I love reflecting pretty things ✨🥰

Does anyone think I should keep the big ornate mirror lol?

Just throwing this idea out there .. what if I moved the picture that is currently over the piano to over the sofa (I could paint the frame white, its old, I was thinking about getting a new frame that's a bit more farmhouse shabby not so ornate)? The pic is much smaller than the mirror and the sconces can get pulled in closer to it so they won't extend past the sofa. Then use the second largest mirror over the piano? Or I would have to look for new artwork that blends with this pic in the room.

Just a thought, does the picture fit inside the mirror.

If it does, how would that look over your piano?

I think layering the mirrors in the foyer would look great!

I have a couple ideas for the mirrors. first, how about using the largest wall as a gallery for all your mirrors? it would make a huge statement, if not your thing, then i was actually thinking that maybe the largest mirror might work over the piano and then maybe fill the top of the piano with different size chunky candles or two lamps on either side of the piano? maybe layer your piece of art currently over the piano in front of the mirror or add a wreath to the middle of the mirror? I think layering mirrors somewhere would look fantastic. one other idea for the largest mirror, instead of hanging it, just prop it vertically behind the sofa in the corner, kind of like you have the one there now, just use the biggest mirror. add a big plant with it in the corner. heres some inspiration pics...

How about a pale terracotta color on the walls? I used Behr "Grounded" in a bedroom 20 years ago and still like it. This might be a little darker than what I have in mind. It has a slightly pinkish tone to it as well as warmer tones. (I actually prefer Benjamin Moore paint but used this because it happened to be the color I wanted.)

Theresa, I love the idea of a mirror over the piano. The only thing is I have this gold framed large pic of my son that keeps getting shuffled around and if it doesn't stay over the piano I'm afraid that was its last hope lol. I removed the big mirror from over the sofa and I think I agree that it was a bit too large and stole the show. I tried the next size down over the sofa and it made everything look so much better but I think its the wrong shape. Its wide enough but not high enough :(

I'll post more pics soon. The sconces looked much better next to the medium size mirror. Didn't seem so lost.

Allison, what about the small white chest on the opposite side of the chair next to the closet door wall? I could still keep it in the room and have a place for a drink to be placed from the chair.

I was hoping to use one of the mirrors in the powder room, which is across from the living room, but I have a pretty large mirror over the vanity and the only wall for another mirror is right across from the big one. I'll post pic of that room as well.

That's so awesome your daughter was working in a shabby chic store! I could just look around in there for hours since I love everything in there! I went online last night to the shabby chic site and wished I could get this beautiful blush/lilac ruffled comforter! It was sold out which was probably a good thing for my bank account!!! 😊

Nancy, I was considering a blush color on the walls but we went with light silvery grey. I used a beautiful color in the powder room that is a cross between blush and lilac, was considering that as well. Every time I think about adding a deeper color my shabby chic roots bring me back to white or grey 😂 I'm shabby at heart! 🥰 I'm drawn to light colors, pastels, soft looking rooms that are basically all white with little bursts of colors. Going with a grey sofa is new to me lol. I'm trying to get used to it and stop thinking about a white one! 😂

    BID EMPTY WALL!!!

Maureen, I love the blush rug. Do you know where I could find it?

Everything is so pretty and so soft. I am still having a hard time with a gold mirror over the sofa. To me it is detracting from all the other softness. The other gold you use throughout is just enough of an accent but over the sofa and in addition to the new beautiful gold sconces it is too much. I’m still voting for soft art in a light frame.

The mirror is too small for over the sofa, and hung too high if you leave it anyway. I still say art over the sofa to add interest.

You have the lighted tree in foyer, so I would use the topiary elsewhere. Lower the tree one book. Larger tray that holds champagne bottle and glasses. Remove the tiny frame and lantern. It's better to have a few interesting things than a jumble of items. Things need to connect visually, so have the tree come in front of the mirror frame a smidge.

Nice, serene dining room. Do you keep the table set all the time? If so, I would do large art or iron piece (old gate?) on blank wall. Art or plates between windows (no mirror). Have an appointment, so running out the door. Will return later.

Grass material roman shades in either room would tie nicely with your floors and soften up the walls. Also, the framed picture of your son is lovely. You may be able to get a giclee reprinting of it on stretched canvas - I think that would look good with the ornate frame.

a couple ideas for your dining room wall... a wall of small wreaths in a grid pattern. idea below, but instead of random placement, maybe more of a grid, 4 across and 2 rows of the same wreath.. or perhaps a wall of vintage plates

there still seems to be something off with the mirror above the sofa, looks too high for its size. what do you think? maybe add a wreath over it for some more dimension as it feels a little flat to me...

Thanks everyone for input. The mirror over sofa was hung on existing hook, if I was keeping it I would move it down some but I still feel its not a good size for that space. Theresa, I love the idea of adding a wreath to soften a mirror if I put one above sofa!

The picture of my son is actually a digital painting if seen up close. I'm just worried about adding another piece of art to the room right across from it?

Allison, the tree in entryway is holding spot for a lamp. I like the tree but it barely gives off any light. Its pretty tho! I have been along for a tray to put everything together but I don't know what to look for, silver? I have enough gold I think lol.

Throwing out an idea, what about a mantel on the empty dining wall that is only 5 inches in depth so it doesn't take up walking space but I can add some candles, etc on top shelf?

If I was to do a different mirror above sofa with a wreath what color frame to match with the light sconces above? They are satin gold with mirror back.

can you share a picture of the sconces. I can't seem to find them. i will say you don't have to match to the sconces per se, more to the look of the overall room. maybe an aged french blue frame, depending on if you plan to bring in more blue to the room?

when you say mantel, are you talking about something like this? if so, I think it requires something below it to help anchor it, otherwise it may look empty by itself on a large wall.

    Maybe something like this:

    Sconce:

looking at your dining room some more, I wonder if it may become too much with another large piece in the room? I may instead just some type of wall decor for that wall, but that's just my opinion.

I just saw this in another thread and its so much my taste and style! Could something similar be used over my sofa or in dining room on large wall?

Just wanted to comment, your room looks so nurturing and relaxing.
