What style is our new house, and how should we decorate?

last modified: 5 years ago

We just purchased a new build house based on the floor plan, location and exterior. It was at the drywall stage and all interior options had been chosen by the builder but we did not see them until they were installed. Here are some pictures of the house. Some lights feel industrial, maybe farmhouse. What "style" would work here??? Our current home is a very beachy house by the ocean. We need new furniture and I'm wondering how this should be decorated? In particular the dining room table and chairs, and the bar stools. Distressed table with white picket chairs, maybe 2 rattan end chairs, or more industrial. I prefer the more airy coastal farmhouse look, but wonder if the dark lights and beams are too heavy for that? The vaulted ceiling will have the dark beams you see on the floor installed. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Looks like they've put up shiplap, so you aren't too far from farmhouse with that and the Shaker style cabinetry. I wouldn't worry about it. The main thing to do is to upgrade lighting to 4000K LED so your colors will read true. The Edison bulbs are notorious for not giving enough light and for turning everything yellow. If I couldn't switch out the bulbs, I would sell fixtures that have them and get new ones. That might also get rid of what you think is too industrial. Lighting should be done before you start selecting fabrics/textiles so you get the colors right in the actual rooms where pieces will go.

I’m not over the moon about the ceiling fixtures. I like just about everything else, particularly the door handles. Check out Serena and Lily for inspiration. IMO, the look works for you (maybe not the price, but there are copycats).

The albatross here is the lighting they have chosen which is decidedly farmhouse industrial. I would pull the lighting. In all honestly it cheapens the space. I am not crazy about the cabinet hardware because it looks heavy but it is workable. If so inclined think about replacing upper cabinet pulls with a black and lucite pull to lighten the look

I would replace your island pendents with some natural rattan ones. Cost-plus World Market has some Serena and Lily knock offs that don't break the bank

For over kitchen table I would bring in polished nickel or beaded lighting. In fact bringing in polished nickel through out your home is going to help balance out the dark finishes. You could also do a soft brushed gold if you are so inclined.

For dining chairs certainly bringing in rattan end chairs would work.

I would keep your furnishings light and neutral and if you want color add it in in pillows and accessories. For case goods I would go light woods, rattans and just a bit of black.

JudyG, I love all things Serena and Lily! It has been my inspiration in the house we’re in!! That’s my dilemma with the lights that are there being so heavy. I also love The Lily Pad Cottage.

Design Interior South. What would farmhouse industrial style look like? (I’ll google it. ). I just want to balance all that heaviness somehow. Would you do a rustic dining table? Without changing the lights, would black chairs go with a light distressed table (like PB Benchwright seadrift table) or white chairs with that table and pull the lights. What would actually go with those lights?

I’m not insistent on coastal if what I have would work with something else that I would like overall.

I am not a fan of white wood chairs with that table. The dark metal accents throw the white off for me.

    Black would be preferable.

A charcoal would work too like this one

Unless you did an upholstered chair like a white slipcovered parsons chair would work.

Or a combo of both. charcoal on sides and slipcovered parsons on ends. Although the ends are shallow on the table you can still get chairs there if you have the space in the room without needing the chairs to fully push under the table.

is this for a formal dining room or a kitchen eating area? Or one great room dining area?

I totally agree about the lighting and LEDs 4000K As for the rest you have blank slate take your time and do what you love the house exterior does not need to be reflected in the interior. If you like caostal use some of that a home does not all have to be one style in fact some of the nicest homes are a mix of things the owners love and no specific “style"

The whole area is open. So living room then dining area then kitchen. So not formal - great room. The black island needs bar stools too. The black island pulls me away from coastal too. I figure they should probably be black? Not sure what a light chair would look like with black island.

Use some color for the stools . Please take your time . What is it you love about that table for instance?

Do you prefer neutrals or color? You home screams for neutrals in its current state. Here are some ideas. I threw blue into the great room design because you had mentioned coastal. But it can easily be done in all neutrals or using colors you love. Here is a similar chandelier to what you have

Here is keep[ing black but using a lighter shape

Neutrals and texture and a lighter hardware touch on the top cabinets. I feel like the apron valance they placed across your window really cuts down on light and I would strongly think about asking them to take that off. It would give you the opportunity to dress the window with a shade in a great fabric or woven.

Great room ideas that tie your black metal, your texture and some added color together.

Design Interior South, that’s awesome. Thank you so much! You’ve given some great ideas that I will use as a starting point!! As soon as I saw the lights they chose, my gut told me they weren’t the best for my style!!

Thank you to everyone for your comments. If anyone can show what farmhouse industrial could look like in the space, I would just be interested to see that. (Not too hardcore industrial! Lol)

Black and white. A lot of black and white. Will you add color? It's an odd concept --decorate the way the home dictates. I always think people bring themselves into a home through their furnishings. I hope you only purchases pieces you love and that speak to you not ones that "fit" the builder's vision of life.

If you’re going wanting to switch out light fixtures, your builder might let you pick out something different and just pay the difference in cost. It wouldn’t cost him anything but the labor since he can use the lights in other houses.

Kaya the thing that turns Farmhouse or Modern Farmhouse into Industrial Farmhouse are components like heavier metals, metal trimmed out furniture with rivets, heavy beams, pulleys or industrial style wheels on furniture factory style light fixtures (your island pendents) etc. The term can be thought of this way. It is basically an old factory that is turned into housing but farm style added. If that makes sense. Exposed brick can be one, but this goes with several decor styles so I wouldnt want you to think , I love exposed brick that means I like industrial. I may not be describing this well so I googled definition and they say what I am but better LOL

"Industrial farmhouse style combines comfortable and welcoming farmhouseatmosphere with the edgy, rugged lines of industrial style. Traditional industrial style is based on the concept of living in a factory or warehouse setting—picture a modernloft apartment in a big city."

Some photos here rivets on hood, barn door, metal pendents, barstools, weathered island

here exposed air ducts, island, lighting, windows and painted brick walls

here metal and exposed beams, weathered brick wall, concrete island

Here hood, weathered walls, heavy beamed island

here weathered beams, metal trimmed weathered island, pendents, weathered flooring

    Hope this helps

I just realized I addressed you as Kaya thinking that your user name was Kaya etc. then re-read and see its Kayak Gurl.......need coffee!

Here are components that might give you a feel for the industrial. You mentioned the PB Benchwright table. PB does a lot of pieces with an industrial edge by using all the elements I listed above. Rivets, distressing, pulleys, wheels, heavy.........

    lights

    tables

Ahhh. That’s certainly not my style!! These are photos I’ve saved for inspiration over the last while. I think I’m getting that it may just mean switching out the lights to go the way that I love!

Your inspo picture shave very small touches of Industrial but overall don't. For instance in the first photo the flush mount lights console table and even wagon wheel light all lean industrial. The bathroom in your Inpso pictures lights are industrial. Third photo is the same as first just different angle. Last photo again the lighting.

Your house is exactly what you want except for the lighting and as I said from the beginning it is the albatross in the space. I would tell the builder you cant seem to move past it and can the lighting be credited so you can go and pick out new lighting. Most builders will let you do this but I have found a lot don't. However in the big picture this is small apples.

The last photos chairs would work really well in your space as chairs or barstools.

Do you have the PB Benchwright table already? It was so specific a comment I figured you did.

No I don’t! We are basically starting from scratch! It was more the sea drift colour than that particular table. A lighter wood, almost distressed.
