Design Dilemma Storage & Closet

7' wide X 10' deep master walk in closet.

We are in the process of updating our master closet and need some help with choosing the depth of our cabinets. We will be using the IKEA PAX cabinet system and need help deciding if we want to use the 13 3/4" deep or the 22 7/8" deep cabinets. We will have drawers on either side of the closet with our hanging.

I like to plan what will go where. The hanging space has to be 22 7/8 deep and I am not sure what you mean by the drawers, do you mean under the hanging space ? I just did a Pax system for a client in South Beach I did all 22/ 78 deep except for one cabinet near a door that I did shallow so it did not feel so much like a tunnel coming in the door. IMO the deeper pieces give much better storage for most things . I like the pullout racks for shoes for sure. In your space you might need to go deep on one side and shallow on the other to give good walking space . I am assuming the doorway is in the 7’ wall so correct that if I am wrong.A quick floor plan will be all we need . My first step in designing a closet is to sit down and plan with my client exactly what they need to store in the closet. Guys are different than women in what they need storage for usually. My client has hundreds of pair of shoes so that drove a large part of the design. FYI planning a Pax is no simple task so take your time .

Thanks, Patricia. I am thinking about putting drawers in the middle of the 10' deep walls and yes, the door is on the 7' wide wall. I am thinking of doing hanging in all 4 corners at 13 3/4" and the drawers in the middle at 22 7/8". I think this will give me the most room to walk around. I also am going to put a 29" W cabinet with drawers and shelves on the back wall. I will try and post floorplan shortly if possible.

I also have a tiny 7x5 bathroom, although mine is true 7x5 with no cutouts and has a tub. It appears from the photo that you do not have a tub. We just re-did this small bathroom, taking the walls down to the studs and putting in a new tub, adding a light over the tub ($ for the electrician) and putting in new tile and a marble floor. We spent over $10,000 and didn't move any walls. Unless you want to get into a BUNCH of $$$$ I would not recommend moving walls! When you do that you will also want to move plumbing and that gets into a lot of money too! I would agree with Denita and concentrate on updating the finishes. The bathrooms she shows here are mostly bigger than what you have, but I will tell you that we removed the old cabinet style sink and put in a pedestal sink which adds the feeling and look of space, although takes away a place to put toiletries. We added a built in-medicine cabinet that is recessed 4" into the wall and 5" out of the wall so it is 9" deep and can hold a lot. I would then get clear doors something like in the photo Denita posted that says Master Bath 10026. And have your tile and floor re-done. You will feel like you have a new bathroom, all updated, and add resale value without breaking the bank!

If you "guestimate" 8-10sf for closet (2ft deep x 4ft long = boring ol' closet). And you guestimate that will take up an extra 6inches for the wall/studs/etc. to frame it in. You are looking at a closet that will steal 12-15sf of space when everything is all said and done. That leaves you with 65sf of bathroom "foot print" to work with. This is doable with many concessions but it will be cramped. It could mean moving existing walls and existing windows because placement of fixtures will require precision and that precision is going to be messed up if you work with what is already there. The true layout and what you can expect out of the finished product will tell you if you want to do it or not. You can work with a shower that is without a surround. I've seen them in Europe. You tile the entire room (up to the ceiling), slope the floor towards the drain and hange a semi-circular shower curtain from the ceiling (usually in a corner). Ta-da. You have just built a 65sf bathroom with pillar sink, toilet and shower. Your feet might just get wet if you need to use the toilet after someone has shower...but these things have been done before. Vent the entire thing with a very good fan out through the roof or the wall and you are done. Cost will not be cheap.

Well, this is the sort of layout you're looking for, but with 7 feet of width, your main issues are going to be (a) getting enough space between the vanity and the tub for walking -- with no deck, in this sketch the space would be about 30 inches, which is a minimum, and (b) keeping track of door swing -- again, with this layout, I'd have it swing open into the tub, unless you can manage a pocket door. A tub is a little over 5 feet, so allowing for some deck and some divider, you can easily get a 48-inch (or so) shower on the same wall. I'd put the window near/over the toilet, since you don't really want daylight confusing your vanity lighting. I guessed at a 5-foot vanity, which is plenty. You might even be able to get a storage closet in the wall closing off the toilet (an optional nicety in itself). You didn't mention whether there's already a waste line -- moving one is a major pain, so you want to try to work around the current one if there is one. 7x10 is plenty of room to fit in the stuff you want, thought, and there are plenty of other layouts that could be made to work, but this one is simple and allows for some aesthetically pleasing results. Part of what would help keep this feeling spacious is that the bath is near the entry, so there's open space at eye level, and you can enclose the shower in glass, so that that whole wall feels open.

Resale value is always a priority to me Thanks @ katinparadise. If I keep the walk-in closet but take 3 feet from closet, closet would become a 5 feet wide X 7 feet deep closet from entrance door. I assume I could only have hanging poles, Etc on one long side and back? As opposed to having hanging space on both sides of closet that I have now? Bathroom would still be 7 feet deep from door entrance but now 11 feet wide? That sounds workable and sound advise, Thanks. I need to figure out how to upload an image so you can see the existing layout/entranceways and windows.

13 3/4 is not deep enoough for hanging .A floor plan would be great and also some drawings of what you are planning.

Hi Patricia. Attached is a top view with dimensions. There is no door on the closet just an opening 32" wide. I calculate that we should have around 34" - 36" walkway in the closet with the 23" cabinets. Thoughts?
