Black stainless vs stainless steel for my black-walnut kitchen ?

last modified: 4 years ago

Hi Experts and Design Pundits,

I bought a new house (in construction) and this is the exact kitchen rendering which has black main cabinets with the walnut accent. (Ignore brown floor, in actual it would be white hardwood).

The kitchen backsplash would be white pickets tiles installed vertically.

The island front would be walnut and the sides would be black.

Countertop - White Calacatta Laza.

Now, we are planning to buy our appliances sometime next week and we are confused about whether we should go for black stainless or not?

Our living room and main house walls are Sherwin Williams - Extra White.

Please suggest.

I am super confused now and not able to visualize how black stainless vs stainless steel will look like in this kitchen?

Any suggestions on this are highly appreciated. Thank you.

Actual walnut sample (which is not as darker as in the above rendering):

Take a cabinet sample to the appliances and see which you prefer. Stainless will stand out from the cabinets, black stainless will blend more.

Personally, I think if I were going to use that wood, I would do appliance panels.

Stainless steel is intrinsically 'silver' colored. Black passivization treatments as well as paint finishes can be scratched, changed by chemical exposure, and/or faded from UV and ozone. Hence, black surfaces may be expected to be more difficult to keep looking new over extended periods of time.

IMO a high gloss white would have been nicer for the cabinets with the walnut but now I almost think blackif you can find ones in a matte finish without texture .

I think the black and walnut looks nice. Ignore people who make rude comments always prefaced with “IMO” (eye roll). I would go with stainless for the appliances. Classic, looks nice, and breaks up the black a bit.

This is going to be beautiful! I'd go with stainless to lighting things up a bit. Also, I'm suspicious of the coating they use to make black stainless and I think the stainless will wear better.

I never buy appliance suites, I buy the best appliance from each vendor. Stainless will match brand to brand, other finishes may not...

^^^^ agreed - and they will never wear out at the same time - making the ability to match impossible if you go black stainless.

Just put Bosch black stainless in my natural cherry kitchen. I am loving it. Still has film, still need to adjust one door

I would go with stainless steel. I read lots of blogs refer to: how the black stainless steel scratches off.

@User, I too have Bosch black stainless in my natural cherry kitchen. I too am loving it. So easy to clean. No large shiny appliances to distract your attention.
