In CA, sure. Anywhere you need HVAC, it is a VERY expensive option that is still leaky, drafty, and a terrible idea. Just the building code glazing requirements are enough to make this idea go away. Unless you want a 30K door?

We rented this home on Lake James NC, which had a glass roll up between the kitchen and patio as a bar "window". We rented in November, and despite it being somewhat mild temps, it was drafty and cold all around the back of the house near the door. I'd never put one in a home.

You might be better off with something like Nana Walls or some sort of accordion folding option, instead. I think they are better insulated and you won't have the same issues with drafts.

I think everyone's correct in that a glass garage door won't provide the insulation needed.

We're building in Knoxville, and are putting a Clopay glass roll up garage door in our pool house. It'll be nice to open up during the summer to overlook the pool, and not a big deal in the winter when the pool house isn't in use. For our home, we're going with the multi-glass sliders to connect the living room to the back deck. Yes, it's a ton more expensive, but necessary to keep the home comfortable In all seasons.

I want to know how people leave these types of doors wide open. I live in Western NC and it would be a bug fest in the house if we left a door open to the outside.

We have a resaturant in a town close to us that has those garge type doors on 2 walls and we have gone there in the winter (we live in BC in Canada ) and have not noticed drafts so IMO this is doable with the right door but I agree the cost could be $$$$ and the nana walls are great looking and probably less money .I live in BC so Okanogan garage door company does these so maybe contact them and see who they reccommend where you are. I love this concept so good luck.

As you're thinking about this it may work better to get a tilt-up garage door instead of a roll up. It could be a lot easier to seal it.

We have a restaurant nearby with those, too, and to keep the chill out they have to blast hot air from a giant vent right over the tables. You can't even talk above the roar. No thanks. But ppl are gonna do this anyway lol.

ThisRenlita would be the ticket. Not cheap but definitely the ticket in my opinion.
