What should I do with this ceiling?

My husband and I just bought this cute 1965 rambler and moved in. I'd like to paint the walls and ceilings, but there's this weird ceiling feature where the entryway, dining, and living areas meet that I'm not sure what to do with.

The height slopes with the roof above - there's a low end near the front door and a high end in the center of the house. I don't think there's space to raise the low end to meet the high end.

When we toured the house, one of my first thoughts was "why is this ceiling fan here?". It's not centered in the ceiling feature and sits very close to the wall, which seems strange, but I'm not sure what (if anything) I should put there instead.

The low end of this ceiling feature seems like it's not sure if it's trying to have edges or be smooth. It doesn't really achieve either, and whatever is holding the "edges" together has gotten... bubbly?

I appreciate any advice on how to sand/paint and style this thing!
