IS there anything to put on orange wood trim to neutralize the orange?

We bought a house from the 90's and the wood trim is very orange in color. Is there anything I can put on it to neutralize the orange? I don't want to paint it white. I've heard about Gel gloss and some sort of tinted wax, do those work? We don't want to make it dark just get rid of the orangey hue.

Thank you for suggestions or thoughts on things you've tried.

Depends on the wood species of the trim. If it's white oak, it's probably a stain issue. If it's red oak, there will always be a reddish undertone that you won't be able to avoid entirely.

blue neutralizes orange. (color theory 101) At this point a glaze may the way to go.

they used builder basic red oak back in the 90's. they prob have an oil based finish which over time, yellows (or turns that orange hue)

you can't just put gel stain on top of a clear coated piece of wood. it won't absorb. ditto w/wax or anything else. (and please, no glazing. it will look like dirt) the clear coat is a barrier.

you'd have to lightly sand off the top coat, wipe w/mineral spirits and then apply the new stain color. I

(you could always pull it off and replace it with a newly stained white oak)

If you don't want to paint it white, why not paint it another color? anything is better than that 90's oak look.

I am NOT a professional. When I saw you complain about orange tone of woodwork , I was like, hold my beer. I have a house built in the 90's. It has honey oak trim, cabinets, doors. Some people get the ashy brown oak. I have decided if I had a choice between gold or ash wood, I would prefer the gold. In my perfect world, my trim would be white. I don't hate the honey oak, although trying to pick floors to go with it, has been a challenge.

In the interior design world, honey oak gold is dated. Is that why you don't like it? There are designers out there that have great tips to work with it. Google "Should I paint my Honey Oak".

I contemplated painting my trim, then I thought about all the doors, all the cupboards & the time & work it would take. Also, the trim I have is not the best grade....it looks rustic & I can live with that. I am not convinced painting it white would make it look better. I think if you have great wood, and you want to invest the time, go for it. It will need sanding to tone it, paint it, whatever you decide. I would say maybe try a small section first if you go the toning route.
