Major remodeling of kitchen help

last modified: 4 years ago

We have been here 7 years and have decided to do some major remodeling of our kitchen. My husband and friend have designed the new kitchen counter that will get rid of the little table and have some stools. No idea what they have decided, but they are both good at designing an idea.

We have a small kitchen, living room area and dining room on main level, plus our bedroom. Going to do wood floors in those areas except bedroom. Our friend said we should paint cabinets, but we have all honey oak trim and doors throughout the house, which are solid wood. Also, going to get new countertop. Our appliances were new when we moved in so we really don’t want to spend money getting new appliances, going to stay with white.

Dilemma, paint color for cabinets with all our oak? Wood color for floors and then countertop colors? Got a couple samples of somerset wood flooring and countertop , but don’t think I want too dark, because it isn’t a big area and don’t want honey oak either.

I am terrible at this and welcome suggestions, been looking at pictures on house and everywhere else. Not cluttered like this usually.

you'll have to post pictures of all the rooms you're concerned about.

post them a few diff angles and comment on each one what you'd like to have done.

wait for the pictures to fully load before hitting submit.

If you want new floors, show us exactly where the floors run through, what you like, dislike, and what you'd rather have.

    budget:

Also, give us an idea of the budget and if you guys can do any DIY, or have any help for doing demo, diy, painting, etc.

what's the proposed changes in the kitchen?

are you keeping the bar height counter? or you said no?

stand in the other doorway and give me another shot at the kitchen.

you want to do a bar overhang there w/stools? so basically you are keeping the layout?

You said you wanted to do "major remodeling". That means major changes. (painting 30 year old cabinets isn't major)

If you want to revamp, then paint what's there and get new countertops.

Your cabinets are very dated looking. the door style. what you could do is contact a local kitchen cabinet company and have them refaced, and the rest painted. (I did this w/mine) Do not go through Home depot or lowes for refacing, it will cost a fortune.

you don't have that many doors to do. you could do a slab front to match your drawers. shouldn't cost more than 1K for new door fronts. if you want shaker style and new drawer fronts to match it, I'd say maybe 1500 for new ones, and painting.

give me an idea what the budget is. without one, I can't begin to suggest anything.

as for the wood molding, it's small, dated and really does nothing for the home. When you have your flooring replaced, have them remove all of it and replace it w/upgraded 5" molding.

This way you won't have to have shoe molding put down next to that old molding.

new molding will look like this over the new wood flooring. gorgeous.

Do it all at once and do it right. you'll never have to worry about upgrading again. If you weren't getting new floors, you could just paint it. But since you're spending all the money for new wood floors, just make life easier and take out the old stuff. the flooring company you hire for install should be able to do the baseboards and molding too. it's usually 2-4$ a sq ft.

I had my new floors and molding done the same way. Looks so much better w/the upgraded baseboards.

just take it all up. doesn't matter if it's solid wood. It's not from 1920. it's just plain old wood molding.

remove the dated chair rail in the dining room too.

I was talking about the trim and doors being honey oak, had no idea what the cabinets are. Now I do , thanks.

"I was talking about the trim and doors being honey oak"

Those do not appear to be oak to me, the base trim is plain old pine and I cannot see the doors but doubt they are oak.

Beth, the countertop area where the sink is I believe is going to be extended on each side by a couple inches.. Yes, we will be putting bar stools, not sure about the design or cost, the guys know more about that. Our kitchen cabinets definitely need a change and this is when we will be doing something. If we painted/changed the baseboards, would they look ok with the rest of the oak trim around windows etc? Don’t want to change the whole house, just the main area upstairs. If so what color? Going to go get a couple more somerset wood floor samples. Just don’t know which way to go on that and then would lIke a lighter countertop. I lIke lighter colors to brighten things up. We did our spare bath and bedroom over the winter, hadn’t redone those either, that was just paint. I have been making decorative changes trying to lighten the house up from such dark colors and so traditional, but takes time and of course money.

    Thanks for you suggestions.

that's a lot of wood trim. do you like it?

when you get your white cabs (I'm assuming you're doing white) and everything surrounding it is that vintage wood trim, will you still like it?

You commented it was a major remodel. that's what I'm going on. to me a major remodel means gutting most everything in that kitchen and family room and redoing it.

You're getting all new flooring. now is the perfect time to take up the baseboard moldings and replace them. You can keep them upstairs, or anywhere else the new flooring isn't going.

this last pic, w/the bar area, have you though about taking that down and doing an island?

No we will probably not do an island but just a different look with countertop style. The back of the one countertop of course will go and living room area stay the same, just the kitchen, can’t afford to change it all. Picked up 4 samples of wood floors. Just don’t know whether to go lighter, darker , different tones? Looking at all kinds of pictures on here, but it needs to go with the baseboards outside of kitchen, don’t want to change everything. I know that is what you are suggesting and I am sure it would be great, but only concentrating on the kitchen area. I appreciate all your feedback though.

    d be great,

You need a Kitchen Designer. You don’t know what you don’t know.

Ok, none of your trim is honey oak. It’s all builder grade pine. I really wouldn’t let this trim dictate the floors or colors of the rooms. For a couple hundred dollars you could replace it all with pre-primed MDF and then you would be able to pick whatever floors you want.

thank you suedonim. that's what I'm trying to convey to lex.

lex, I understand you replacing the floors, but hanging onto those old baseboards will be a mistake. they will have to run shoe molding next to the base if they don't take them up, in order to hide the cut end pieces of the new flooring. now you'll have this small, old wood baseboard, and another wood, quarter round shoe molding next to that. The whole point is to upgrade, not compound the current look.

    is this what you want?

Trust me, you will never regret doing it. I know you don't want to change everything. and maybe you can keep the door trim and just paint it white to match the new baseboards.

or, even if you choose to keep the wood trim around the doors, the newer white baseboard still looks better

But if you're going through all the expense of new flooring, it doesn't make sense to keep that old, ugly baseboard. Or worse yet, try and match your new flooring to it! new floors are not cheap. why skimp out on a few hundred more and leave that baseboard?

Get rid of old baseboard. Otherwise have to paint and install quarter-round, which will protrude past door trim. Your toes will thank you.

We just ordered our hardwood flooring, hickory saddle. I told my husband I still think the cabinets need painted in order to pick out countertops, which is a huge expense. I was wondering about off white to go with the white appliances, that way they don’t stick out.? They all work, we are not buying new ones, just extra expense.

i was using a kitchen visualizer to upload different countertops and nothing was popping with our cabinets unless we went dark again, just think they need painted.

He said between countertops for our small space and flooring , we were looking at almost $20,000 labor included . That may not be much for some, but it is all relevant. Not trying to skimp, but just asking for suggestions and will be doing the baseboards.

You don't have to go too creamy on the cabinets. a soft white will be fine.

    Cloud White - BM

    Dover White

This is a nice neutral white w/white appliances. Try BM Oxford White

Really like all the pictures and color combos that you sent, very pretty off whites and like the black island too with countertop. Great ideas!

Jim was measuring again this morning and I think we are going to do an island, this will open the area up. We are going to make one level, seating for 4 stools and storage area, never have enough storage. But excited about that.

Really appreciate all the pictures that you sent me with colors Beth and that you keep helping me with this project!
