How do we improve the exterior of this stucco house?

last modified: 5 years ago

We bought this stucco house with a roof that has gray cement tiles. The flag pole has since been removed. We are willing to add stone or wood to the front, paint, trees, and bushes. Without taking out all of the brown and gray rock or replacing the roof, what can be done? Is removing the flagstone advisable to plant grass or put a different type of patio there?

how about painting the alcove by the front door a navy blue

Your house looks nice. I would paint your front door a color , and also add some flowering type plants into your landscaping, and large pots of colorful plants by each entry pillar. The only thing I actually see wrong with it, is a lack of personality.

Leave the base details on the walls, along with the trim and gabled entrance white and paint the wall area above the base detail a color selected from the terraced rock walls in front of the house. I would pull out the two evergreens and replace them with something that doesn't block the view of your entrance. Plant a few trees.

BTW that's a Victorian style door and doesn't work with your home. The entry could benefit from a wood grain door as well as the garage doors when those requirement replacement

Paint the front door and the garage door a deep greige - check out BM HC-168 Chelsea Gray. Swap the shrubs out for some tall native grasses in a deeper green hue - you want the green to pop off the front of the house (do you know your planting zone?). I like the color of the house as-is, as well as the roof!

Keep the base and trim the same color.

Consider adding a faux Dove Cote over your arched entry. It's a charming feature that can easily be added with concrete tubes fastened to the stucco.

Without touching those stone beds, you're only 1/2 way there no matter what else you do. Get a pro in to pull out the toadstool shrubs and design a pretty front for your home with locally appropriate plantings in the stone terraces. I don't understand why the two columns supporting the porch are perched on those tiny blocks underneath. I'd want that fixed somehow.

Whatever you do, please add a base around the columns so they don't look like their hanging off the front of the house.

what's wrong w/the roof tiles? i just had that color. not the greatest pic since the yard work hadn't been done here (too hot)

I did do a black/white/gray color scheme, and I have the wood garage doors.

then you'd need to address your landscaping.

try painting your fascia trim the dark charcoal, as well as the trim around the windows and doors.

    get a new garage door.

Lose the dated arch windows on the garage door, update your lights and address

Amazing suggestions. What would an updated address look like?

lots of diff ways to do it. notice the darker door here, the address plaque and the light.

around the base they did the white stone work.

or you could do a copper plaque. w/that terra cotta, the copper and black and wood tones would look amazing.

Notice the wood doors. if you can't do wood, try and find some other door styles and try black.

this is SW Iron Ore. would also work

I have the spanish tile and this black/gold stacked stone around my door. I painted the door a dark BM Gray color. you can see the Wrought Iron trim color w/my stucco color

I'd paint your fascia trim the Wrought Iron color. (I should have used it instead of the platinum, but I thought my roof tiles were going to be a lot darker)

you can see how the warm wood tones in the gate and the garage door set off the colors

here's the wrought iron color on my gutters. I think this color on your roof trim would look great:

Landscaping will be the finish. remove those shrubs in the flower beds and try something diff

I would not add stone to the house. I would replace the front door and update the garage door.

I'm not a fan of the flag stone, but is is useful. Grass needs a lot of water, maybe you could do a drought tolerant garden there. Fix the columns or raise the planting bed.

I like the paint suggestions already given.

Good luck. It is an attractive house.

I didn't mean to imply to add more stone to the house. I was just illustrating the diff ways to enhance the garage area. Since OP already has two diff types of stone work, it's not necessary for another.

I think with a diff garage door, the darker trim color, the wood front door (or paint, but a diff style door than what's currently there), lighting, and new plants/pots, it will make a huge diff.

don't know if you're in the south west, but succulents or cacti can be pretty if done right.

i'd remove these box hedges since they do nothing visually to enhance the home.

something like these would look much better with all of the rock

Msquite trees or palo verde do well in dry landscapes
