Mirror and light help in master bathroom

last modified: 5 years ago

What kind of mirror would look best with our 69" vanity in our master? The dilemma is our light switches and outlets are above the back splash. Should we do a custom full wall mirror with lights installed on it or above it? Or, if we purchased mirrors, won't they be too high if placed above the electrical switches/outlets? I've included a photo of our vanity as well as some light fixtures that I like. Any suggestions or photos would really help. Thank you!

Some very bad planning here. You're not showing us where the electrical boxes are currently.

Can you move the electrical boxes so that you have one sconce on either side and one in the center?

Of course with the correct sized mirrors, you can place the fixtures above the mirrors. See below. I like the idea of a metal frame to match your fixtures and beveled mirrors.

BeverlyFLAdeziner, thank you! You can see the outlets and switches above the sink. I have a window on the wall behind the door, so there wasn't another location for the switches. I like double mirrors and sconces, but the mirrors would be too high, correct?

My question was NOT about the electrical switches, but the boxes mounted to receive your lights..............where are they???? Are they mounted up above where the mirrors would go?

See the illustration below. If you have no boxes on the sides to mount sconces then you must go above. The mirrors will not be too high.

If you mount the mirror above the receptacles, it will be only too high for five-year-olds. Here are my mirrors...never gave the mounting height a second thought, and it's never been a problem:

Kudzu9 thank you for showing your beautiful bathroom. It helps to see that they don’t have to be lower.

BeverlyFLDeziner wow this is really helpful. I prefer the rectangular mirrors. Would it look odd if I used only one sconce in the middle of the mirrors??

everdebz the tile contractor was finishing up the shower. I’ll be back this weekend to look at the progress. Thank you for your help.

    Kay-

Also remember that having mirrors somewhat higher than just above sink level means fewer or no splash marks that you have to otherwise keep cleaning off of the mirrors. ;-)

I wondered if 2 lamps would be ok over each mirror, otherwise it could get 'busy' looking...

You can install one light over each mirror if you like. These was the only photos I could find.

You could go without the lighting fixtures and do 2 rectangle LED Mirrors..

If you consider LED mirrors — which I think are great for certain installations — determine whether the LEDs are user-replaceable. LEDs have long lives, but they don’t last forever, and sometimes you can also get a defective product that burns out prematurely. You don’t want to be stuck a couple years down the road with non-functional LED mirrors.

I also wondered, but how elegant a look do you want? is flooring marble?

everdebz yes the flooring is marble. I hadn't thought of LED mirrors. I agree 2 lamps or 1 would be best. Thank you!

Back to a big picture - is your house a bit on the contemporary side, with straight lines? to me, it'd be a consideration for LED's look ...

Created by hand, the chipped edge is based in history and has been transformed to reveal a modern look - you see through the jagged edge of the chip to the wall behind the mirror - it also shows more of the green color of the glass.

everdebz kudzu9 Altair BeverlyFLADeziner Thank you all for your opinions and suggestions. I decided to do a full custom mirror with 2 lights over. My question is how high should I go with the mirror? To the door frame, or below the lights? I really appreciate your ideas. Thank you!

I'd do from above the outlets, to below the lights, and then an inch or two in from the left & right.
