HELP elevate my 'modern' home office / guest bedroom!

last modified: 5 years ago

Our 2nd bedroom functions as a home office as well as a guest bedroom. I'd say more than 85% of the time it is almost exclusively used by us as a home office though. (esp with COVID, we haven't had overnight visitors since February).

I'm trying to convince my husband that it's a good idea to get rid of the bed and we could find a couch/daybed instead - so our office resembles a more true OFFICE, but still has the ability to accommodate overnight guests if we needed to.

If we wanted to keep the bed, any advice on how we could improve the layout with existing furniture? or even advice on furniture to omit, or add to improve it?

Right now, I feel like this room is just a horrible hodge-podge and there's nothing tying it all together to give it that clean, fresh, modern-chic look I'm trying to attain.

HELP!! Any and all advice/guidance is GREATLY appreciated. Thank you!

I would get rid of the cluttered looking shelving unit do a hide a bed for sure since that bed is not inviting looking anyway I would need to scale floor plan but IMO this space looks too small to use a s aguest room and an office BTW I really dislike home offices in a guest space. What is in the closet ? I have often usedclosets for office spaces in tight spots.

I think you just need some decor changes and spend money on accessorizing differently vs a day bed.

Do you really care if it doesn't feel like a true office, if it was a great space that you were happy in? One way or the other, guests will still have a desk to deal with.

I‘d remove the bookcase and prints so it doesn’t feel as cluttered, add white linen curtains from IKEA, a large and light art, larger rug, better accessorized bed and add a cute chandelier.

@Maureen This is great advice, thank you so much. I suppose you're right - as long as it looks/feels inviting, I don't really care if it feels/looks like a true office. I can remove the bookcase, no problem. What prints are you saying to get rid of? And if we keep the bed and current bedding, what color pillows/throws do you think would be the best compliment? The olive green velvet office chair is basically new so hopefully we can work around that color scheme, but if not - let me know what you think. THANK YOU AGAIN! I sincerely appreciate all of the guidance!

@Patricia Colwell Consulting thank you so much for your response, great advice as well. The previous owners had full built-in shelving installed in this closet. I have to think it would be a lot of work (and likely cost a pretty penny) for us to re-work this so it could be re-purposed into a working space? Also, that would mean my back would be facing the main window in this room and I prefer to be somewhat facing natural light if possible. That said, I can easily remove the bookshelf and the bed per your suggestions. What would be most optimal floor plan with those 2 items removed? I have attached a floor plan here!

I think the most efficient desks especially when you have multiple monitors (I do) are L shaped desks.

I would place the desk on the window wall and the return on the wall perpendicular to that or vice versa.

That will give you plenty of place for your monitors on the surface, and plenty of space underneath for hard drives, drawer units, battery back ups, etc.

On the shelving unit in your closet create a super-duper efficient storage system for your office supplies and you can keep your printer/scanner in there if it is a wireless one.

Depending on your need, where you currently have your desk, you can put a low horizontal file cabinet (wood if you like) and if you need to you can put a printer on top of that.

If you don't need that file cabinet, you can put a comfy chair and footstool there.

As far as a bed, on the wall opposite where the current bed is I would put a Murphy bed.

I was referring to the framed items as you enter. Suggest a set of prints or one large piece that will compliment the layering of your bedding.

You could add a tall plant where bookcase was to bring in more green and a natural element.

I’d ask if this is your forever home or do you care about resale? To convert the closet to open style usable shelving and drawers/counter would make sense if this is your forever home and you will use it as an office most of the time. If you care about resale you’d want to keep that as a functioning closet so it can be classified as a bedroom for the sale. AND budget? I do think you’d be happier with a daybed as a budget solution to make this feel more office like.

Regardless of forever home or not it would make sense to utilize the closet better for all of your 'office' stuff so if that means getting an outlet put in there so the printer and all your stuff on the tall shelving can go in there - that would be wise. Then, daybed or not, replace the tall shelving and nightstand with a continuous low closed storage furniture piece - maybe like this photo -

this will open up the room visually. This furniture piece can function as a nightstand and office storage. Closed storage is your friend in this space. Replacing the closet doors with slider doors would allow for the 'office' to function easier. Maybe the inside of the closet is converted to half 'closet' for guests use and half 'office' with shelves for printer and office supplies. Then, once you decide on daybed or not I'd repost an updated photo and we can help with rearranging art. I think where you have it now is not doing the room any justice. I could see it consolidated/edited on the wall where the tall shelving is as that will create a focal point.

Following. Because as I write i have painters painting my sometimes-a-bedroom-but-now-mostly-a-home-office!

I was also debating getting rid of the bed, but focussing on decor for now - painting, drapes, lighting. artwork.

Guess there are a lot of us doing this right now!

Look at the Crate and Barrel Aspect line - it might work for the space and would visually clean things up. And while you’re there check out the New Bedford Daybed with trundle.

I could see the 2 48” units having the sliding doors like this and the 1 24” unit being an open cubby (Christmas present hiding spot:)

I found of all my mother's present hiding spots, that never works.

I was polite enough to act totally surprised on opening the presents.

@thinkdesignlive I think your advice to get some kind of continuous low closed storage furniture piece is spot on. I love that one from Crate & Barrel! Before I purchase, I'm hoping you can lend your expertise once more!

I have officially decided to get rid of the bed - I purchased this sectional from a friend of mine who was moving out of state for a really reasonable price. It's kind of a blue grey linen, and I figure it could certainly serve the purpose of sleeping a guest if need be. I am killing the tall shelving unit and black nightstand per your recommendation to keep office supplies organized and out-of-sight.

Now that we have a bed gone and this 3 separate piece sectional in the picture, would you arrange the room any differently from your first suggestion? If so, please advise - I love that you are all so willing to help! I will gladly take all the constructive criticism/feedback I can get! :-)

Please note - the pictures of the sectional were taken at my friend's house, so this is not the room in our house :-)

Are you trying to fit that entire sectional in the room or just a piece of it? I don't think it will fit very well in that room with your desk and the low storage (if you expect the low storage to be accessible and if you plan to use the whole sectional). If it's not too late to rethink this I would - if I were a guest I would prefer a real daybed or what you have over sleeping on this sectional. Actually upon further study - this sectional won't work in the room at all. Just go back to my sketch and use the squares as your guide to try to place it. Won't work. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.
