Need help with mid century ranch exterior entrance and more

I would love any thoughts ideas on how to improve our ranch. We considered painting the brick, but we are looking at just changing the trim colors because we actually like the color. The house entrance has always bothered me as well as the lack of windows on the left side. We added a column on the front entrance years ago and painted the front door, but it still needs a lot of help. Any paint color ideas, exterior budget friendly updates, and landscaping tips are are much appreciated.

I really like your house. I think the door needs to be a bolder blue so that it stands out more. Not necessarily bright but deeper richer color. Then address the landscaping. The walk should start from the street or further down the driveway so as to draw the eye to the entry. Another thought is the inside shutters are stark white compared to the beige trim and stand out in not a good way. I think they should be the color of the trim

The house looks well cared for. Are those azaleas in the foundation bed? Please show a photo of the walkway.

The contrast between and trim has always bothered us as well. They do look a little better when opened. Also, the glass block needs to go.

Excellent photos, thanks. The azaleas will be lovely in the spring. I suggest a couple changes: use a lighter paint for the door, siding and trim; use a white splotched brick as a guide to the shade. Also, move the traditional style urns to a less prominent location. If you want to replace them with large pots planted for fall, look at geometric shapes such cylinders or rectangles that were popular in the 1960's.

I disagree about removing the glass block window. I assume it is a bathroom? It adds to the mid century charm of your house. Embrace it! The most that I would do is work on your landscaping, pulling your sidewalk away from the house and making the approach to your front door more interesting. Curve the path to make larger planting beds. Your home is LOVELY!

Think about landscaping in a tighter, more symetrical style than what you have. There may be a way to arrange some of your current plants more symetrically.

Change out the planters for an MCM angular style.

These are all wonderful suggestions! Never thought about the style of planters but it makes total sense. Also, I like the landing idea as well, if you look at the photos in the beginning you can also see the strange brick flower bed, which we have not used as it is covered by a roof so it can't get rain. We have never really figured out how to make it work.

The house trim does need painting...would love to have suggestions on the color that would best complement the Chicago style brick.

    Thanks in advance!

You don't seem to have much trim to paint. Maybe keep it the same as the siding? I do think a bright orange door would stand out the way your pumpkins do right now! Find someone who can help you with great MCM landscaping--more edgy and geometric than what you have currently.

I would change the glass block window. It is like a neon sign screaming: This is the bathroom !

I don't know if that is mid century but a window similar to your other two front windows with inside shutters would unify the front facade nicely.

Maybe a bigger project that you envision, but I would replace the porch surface with brick, add a broad, deep step off the porch and an equally wide brick walk to the street. Take out the odd little brick bed next to the house and use those bricks for the step, if nothing else. You could also remove all the brick bed areas and use them on the porch.Or you could replace the brick with concrete and face it with your own bricks sawn into 3 pieces to use as facing bricks. Pick up on that orange brick near the step to paint the front doors ochre or sienna. I would paint all the trim, porch siding, column and garage in back with a soft white like those two bricks just below the left corner of the front window. Replace or move your house numbers to the column or to the brick wall opposite it. Other than the azaleas, which I always love, I would replace any non-blooming plants with more azaleas or with low growing evergreen shrubbery that will stay below the windows without you having to maintain it.
