Furniture layout in long, narrow living room

Do you have a better idea for a layout?

I‘m in the market for new seating and then rugs. Our living room is long and narrow, 29 x 12 (width varies a little). We are a family of 5. Therefore, lots of seating is necessary.

I borrowed furniture from other rooms to help me get a feel. I’m thinking a couch (one not as deep as the pic), loveseat (maybe a little shorter than the one in the pic), a smaller chair, and a rectangle ottoman to sit in front of the couch. Maybe a sofa table behind the loveseat? Does this seem like a lot of stuff in such a small area?

I have no useful idea of what to do with the second half of the room. I guess I will put a couple of wingbacks or slipper chairs. Or maybe a chaise in the corner near the gray fan. And the dog bed. Although I don’t foresee the chairs getting used. (Ignore the floating furniture that is there now. I’m waiting for muscles. The current chaise isn’t staying.)

Due to the narrowness of the room, I guess a couple of 8 x 10 rugs will work? The current rug, which is an 8 x 10, could be pulled out from under the furniture a little more.

I hope my pics are sufficient, but if I can improve upon them, please let me know.

I think all your ideas re: furniture and placement are great. Current placement with tv in corner, etc, is very good. I also think current ottoman works, in style and shape. If you get furniture/seating that is more streamlined, the room will also feel more spacious. Your rug size ideas are also good.

100" length. Fairly streamlined design. Good reviews. Also, on sale. 15-20% off site-wide right now.

The fireplace is all but forgotten the way the room is styled now. I'd love to see you try this: Place the tv opposite the fireplace - you might want to "skootch" it a bit off-center, toward the middle of that wall a bit. Place the sofa facing the small window, and two chairs (or love seat) in front of the small window. Then add two chairs and small side table in front of the bowed window....or you might even have room for a smallish game table and chairs.

Love it, freedomplace. Even has a matching loveseat. Would you even get the matching chair? I feel like I‘m crossing the boring line with the chair. Too matchy matchy? And i would have to see it in person. But it is great inspiration.

Hmmm, Sammie, that exact layout has never crossed my mind. You’re right, the fireplace is definitely not a focal point the way it is arranged. I love the idea of making the room more centered around it! And if I understand correctly, it would also be utilizing more of the room as the tv would allllllmost be centered in the room.

But we spend a lot of time watching tv in there. Really that’s the only time we use the room. Will it be comfortable if we all have to the look to our side to see the tv? On binge days, we would need to rotate to even out the crook in our neck. :)

And the little window looks out at the driveway, street and neighbor. Blah. The big window looks at our huge beautiful backyard. ❤️

But I’m still thinking about it.

freedomplace, love the solid chair and recliner. The striped one...maybe if the fabric was different. Does the solid color non recliner chair go with that couch? Hard to tell on internet, but I guess it is a lot darker than the couch/loveseat. Do you know the brand?

the couch and loveseat need to match, right? ok, well, since I don't know what I’m doing, I should save myself some stress and get matching ones?

Nevermind, freedomplace. I see the links for all the chairs now.

I understand centering everything around the fireplace, but I’m having a hard time believing that trumps the window view.

Also would need someone to come add tv hookup and potentially ceiling light/fan.

I love that MCM type recliner. You could definitely bring that in. Love West Elm.

The other 'iris' chair is darker, but as an accent chair it is ok and could be fun with adding some pillows to sofa in the darker color. Plus, I think that chair already comes with a beige patterned pillow, too. I like that the chair is also in a chenille like the sofa. For example, you could add one darker brown pillow to sofa.

But I do love the lighter colored recliner you show, also. You absolutely know what you are doing.

The sofa and love seat don't have to necessarily match. If you like West Elm, the Everett loveseat is a nice piece. But I think you could go with the Raymour matching sofa and loveseat as well, if you like the pieces. Makes it easy.

Btw, I like your idea of a separate seating area by fireplace. And it also makes sense with how you are using the space. As I mentioned in my first comment, I really think your furniture arrangement is on point.

kbuescher I think you could keep the tv viewing area where it is but maybe scale down the seating in that area and create a more substantial seating around around fireplace as well. ;)

Do you want two separate spaces? If you don't need two spaces, I would place the TV next to the fireplace to centralize things and incorporate swivel chairs for functionality.

I'd put the TV beside the fireplace. (Well, actually if it were me I'd get rid of the fireplace but you may not want to do that. )

Long long sofa facing the fireplace/TV. Seating on either side, some combination of swivel chairs or a L-shape sofa.

Small table with chairs near the nice view - for games, laptop etc.

The problem in the room is the t v. Install it where the clock is now, using a long swivel arm. (I am not a techie).

Now you can arrange furniture for the spaces and not have to worry about t v viewing.

Try the chaise under the window facing the fireplace with additional two seater on wall opposite fireplace. Fill up empty corner with floor plant, Now you have a sectional facing fireplace.

Similar window treatments on either end of the room will help disguise the fact the room is so long.

Other end of living room, put sofa with back to window. Add your ottoman and the leather chair into the mix.

The mess next to fireplace is the t v on swivel arm.

Don’t worry about the view out the windows. That’s not your priority.. You need seating for 5 and access to t v.

The view out windows looks beautiful. Also, since I tend to often look at placement from an Eastern Feng Shui perspective, I would not place sofa with back to windows in any room, if at all avoidable.

er612, I really like those floorplans for that space!

er612, I’m going to move the furniture around to test out your plans. Love them. The half circles behind the sectional... are those foot stools tucked under a sofa table?

Here is something you couldn‘t see in the original pics. There is a quirky recessed shelf between the fireplace and clock. (I need help with that shelf, but that’s for another day.). But I’m thinking I could mount the tv where the clock is, and some of the tv will hang in front of the shelf. Is that weird? The DVD player, etc can sit on the shelf.

And for me the view out the window is a priority. I would rather be watching tv outside. :). And the couch directly in front of the window would be toasty in the summer and cold in the winter.

The fireplace is a primary source of heat. Not getting rid of it.

Could you build out the wall where the clock is now, making it wider?

Steer clear of matching sets and loveseats (the bane of good arrangements!) You're set up well for a dual function space. You didn't say what age your kids are. Are they mature enough to sit still together on a loveseat? They're probably one of the biggest design failures we have to deal with here on Houzz. I like er612's first and second concepts for dual purpose. If the barrel/tub chairs are swivels they will be versatile for company conversation or for watching TV, and the sectional will be great for family snuggle time if the kids haven't grown beyond all that stuff!

Kids are 14 and 12 (twins). As long as they don’t touch other, they could share a loveseat. :)

decoen-are you saying the couch and loveseat shouldn’t match?

Are barrel chairs comfortable enough that one would want to sit and watch tv in? Is that the only option for swivel chairs? Isn’t the style of barrel chairs formal and stuffy? I’m not formal and stuffy. Is there such thing as mid century modern swivel chairs? 😜

partim, I like the idea of building the wall out. Not sure if that will work. The wall with the clock sticks out further than the brick on the fireplace. not by much but a few inches. :( Maybe it would look okay still???

Barrel chairs are very comfortable because of the rounded back. Try some before you buy them and you'll see.

So... If you are still interested in the Iris chair at all, just want to let you know the chair is actually grey, not brown. They are calling the color Pewter. It looks so brown on my monitor.

Here is pic from customer review of Iris loveseat. This is the pillow that also comes with chair. (Doggie not included. 😂 So cute. Precious.)

Anyway, even better. You could just toss a grey lumbar into sofa pillow mix - or just simply use only one grey pillow or throw if you prefer! As one example, this oversized lumbar from Target is fun.

Here are some options keeping the TV in its current location:

I would incorporate some type of seating under the sofa tables (chairs, stools, bench).
