Choosing dining chairs to go with a large, glossy table

last modified: 5 years ago

Hi!

I recently bought this dining table on a bit of an impulse... (in my defence, it was a good price for the quality and condition!):

And now I'm trying to find chairs to go with it.

I originally wanted x-back bistro chairs or something similar, like this:

But I feel they might be too dainty and/or matte for the table. (Not sure which... Perhaps black, or metal finish, would work better?)

As a similar alternative, I was also looking at chairs with slightly larger legs, like this:

Would either of these options go with the table, or should I stick to something even more substantial, like the 2nd pic of the table? I actually do like the look of the chairs/bench in the second photo, I just can't find any for an affordable price (I'd need 10 chairs, or 4-6 chairs and a long bench).

Thanks so much for the help!

P.S. I was also thinking about adding a rug like this, but I'm now holding off, as I'm not sure if it would change what style of chairs to go for:

That table is pretty. It is also a bit formal and weighty in style. The upholstered chairs suit it nicely. Your first pic seems too casual. The 2nd is a better fit but reminds me of a restaurant chair. I've been in antique stores that have acres of dining chairs

Thanks, @lisaam! I was afraid to hear that :-)

I was super excited about the bistro-like chairs (found some for a great price), but as I was falling asleep, it occurred to me that they just don't go with the table style. Good thing I didn't impulse buy those, too!

Do you have any suggestions other than upholstered chairs, just so I can see my options? I've been looking at photos online, but I'm really struggling to find anything other than upholstered for this type of table.

Upholstered chairs, definitely. But if you want to make the look less formal, you could go with slipcovered Parsons chairs.

One thing about dining chairs with upholstered seats is that it is typically very easy to DIY change the fabric using scissors and a stapler. If you have kids choose sunbrella or stain resistant fabric. Benches are ok for kids but not really for adults. Back support and not needing to step over the bench both add comfort.

Thanks for the suggestion, @Sabrina Alfin Interiors! I was told slip covers are harder to maintain (I guess they lose their "crispness"..? Idk.), but I do like the look!

Nah. They're actually pretty easy to maintain if you get washable linen.

Good points, thanks again @lisaam. I like the idea of sunbrella fabrics. No kids (yet), but messy friends and family!

Thank you @Sabrina Alfin Interiors, that's good to know. In that case, perhaps I can do upholstered side chairs and large, slipcovered end chairs.

Thank you both again again for the ideas!

I love the look of the full upholstered chairs in the top picture to go with the table. They offset the bulkiness of the table very well. You may want to get your rug first, since you don't have an exact chair in mind yet. That makes it a little easier to get a chair to go with the rug instead of the other way around. The table is great BTW.

I have these in leather (no longer made, I don't think). They are Ritz Dining Chair by Thomas Pheasant for Baker and outrageously expensive (I used to go to the semi-annual Baker sales when we lived in NC - talk about impulse purchases, lol) but there are many that look like this made by others. They've held up wonderfully and I always get compliments, no matter in which of the last 3 or 4 places I've lived that they were used.

Thanks so much @BeverlyFLADeziner! Will take a look at Bassett.

Holy moly, the Bassett chairs are expensive! 2 cost more than my table!

Found something similar on Williams Sonoma, guess I will be waiting for a sale.. :-)

I like that oval cane chair from ASF. None of their chairs are very expensive. If you're looking at WS Home you can probably find a similar chair at their other divisions Pottery Barn or West Elm.

Thanks again @BeverlyFLADeziner!! Will take a look at all of your suggestions. I just happened upon the WS Home chair when I was Googling the Bassett upholstered dining chair :-)

I have not been educated for this...I can't see anything bad about your first photo's chairs !

Deb, The newly purchased table is a bit formal and the wood bistro chairs are a bit casual to work successfully together. It's like pairing tuxedo pants with a golf shirt. Sure they could both be the same color, but not complement one another because of the details.

I assumed that the light green velvet (?) upholstered chairs in the very first photo are yours, AJ...is that not the case? If they are your existing chairs, I vote for them! They look very inviting for someone sitting at your dining table. If they aren't yours...maybe something similarly substantial-looking?

@Karen - Oh, none of those chairs are actually mine! I just found two different postings of the same table online, as I don't have the table with me yet. I honestly didn't give the green chairs much thought, as I don't know what color scheme I want to go with.

Thank you @Amy Peltier Interior Design & Home!! I haven't liked those types of square backed chairs when I've seen them standalone, but they do look nice with the table! I especially like it with the white cabinetry behind. I was thinking of getting a large white sideboard. (I have a sideboard that matches the table, but I thought it might be too dark / bulky for the same room)

Are you anywhere near a Williams Sonoma outlet? I don't know how well stocked they would be right now (covid) but the WS one near us is always jammed full of things at this time of the year through Christmas. We also had a Restoration Hardware outlet that is now closed - no wonder - prices were ridiculously high.

It really depends on your style and how you want room to feel, as the table is pretty versatile. Even inexpensive chairs add up when multipled by 6.

Structube has well priced chairs in a variety of styles; here are just a few.

Also take a look on Facebook Marketplace as both new and used items are offered at great prices. If you don’t find anything, keep looking as new things are added all the time.

@tsjmjh - Great idea! The outlets are a few hours drive from me, will definitely check those out when I get some time.

@Maureen - Thanks for the ideas! I hadn't considered some of those more modern styles (I think they're modern..?), will try to borrow some to see how I like it with the table.

"Even inexpensive chairs add up when multipled by 6." -- YES!! This is another problem I have.

I just need to adjust my expectations (can't find new/unused + good quality + comfortable + inexpensive), or be willing to spend a little bit more :-)

If you like the look of a more modern feel, no harm in buying a few and if you don’t like, just return

If not in a hurry, don’t give up on Marketplace. Here are some in my area and when looking at chairs, envision chairs being reupholstered if necessary. If you see a set at a good price with a table, just resell table

Thanks @Maureen!! I've been looking at Craigslist and Offer Up, and will take a look at Marketplace now! I was also thinking about buying chairs on consignment, using them for a few years, and then reupholstering.

Good luck and If you want to upholster don’t wait a few years - fabric doesn’t have to be expensive and if chair seat is an actual pad resting on chair, it will be a breeze to remove and recover. Lots of on line help in this regard. add cotton batting for a nicer and more comfortable seat. Chair below for example could really benefit

Hi AJ! Now a vote for buying on consignment & reupholstering. I bought 6 Parsons-style chairs from a local furniture consignment shop; they were the size and scale that I wanted, and were substantial and sturdy...but covered in a nondescript fabric that made them easy to overlook. I think I paid $40 each, so $240 for all six (after pricing similar new chairs at about 10x that amount, upholstered in fabric that I didn't love). I had the seat cushions replaced with a thicker, firmer cushion, and had them upholstered in a darkish slate blue velvet...I think the complete cost (including the chairs themselves) ended up at a bit more than $2000. The chairs are comfortable to sit on, and have nice tall backs to lean against...pre-COVID, they lent themselves to hanging about the table with friends after dinner. If the reupholstering is in the budget, that could be the way to go!

Thanks again, @Maureen! I didn't know about the cotton batting, so I've only been looking at chairs with nice cushy seats.

Wow, that's a great deal @Karen! I didn't think about replacing the cushion, but that is definitely an option too.

You both have opened new doors for me, thanks so much :-)

Well... I thought I had found the perfect chair at an affordable price, but unfortunately someone beat me to it :-(

In case you're curious, here's what I had picked:

I'm on the hunt again, and found these, but I'm not sure if the legs would go with my table (actually the chairs looks quite similar to the example @BeverlyFLADeziner provided, but these legs are more "rustic" feeling to me):

You all have a better eye than I do ... Would it look OK with the table, or does it feel a bit "off".

Thanks so much for the help thus far!! I would not have even considered these chairs without your suggestions!

Another chair that I found online, described as "elegant". Not quite sure if it's my taste, still thinking...

And a similar option, material velvet in "sand" color:

I'm not sure how velvet holds up to regular use, so will need to do a bit of research first.

Not getting a good vibe from the seller for the "elegant" chair, so that's probably not an option. I'm between the 2nd pics in both of my previous posts, unless I find something else.

    last modified: 5 years ago

Not sure how I feel about the "sand" velvet fabric... Good price, but the chair back makes me think of cowboys.

One more option, although somewhat of a pain, since it only comes with 6 chairs (2 arm, 4 side) -

I like the last ones and having head table arm chairs will be nice. Good luck.

Thanks @Maureen! I also liked the last one, just trying to work with the seller on pricing and how I would arrange pickup.

I also found these last night. Not sure if the legs would go with my table, plus I'd have to buy and resell their table, like you had suggested. I suppose reselling the table might cover the cost of 1 extra chair, though.. (I'd need to buy 2 more)

On second thought, the chairs may be a bit too bland (no tufting on the backrest). I also can't verify the chair manufacturer.. It's listed as RH, but I can't find anything with silver nailheads.

Oops, sorry @tsjmjh, I just saw your post about the Ritz Dining Chair by Thomas Pheasant for Baker. Love those! Looks like the nicer version of Restoration Hardware Martine (the pic I posted above is that style, just not the tufted version).

I am now between the chairs above, and these parsons chairs:

Either would probably be fine, just different styles, but I'm not sure what look I'm going for 😬
