Help- jack and Jill bathroom, remove wall separating toilet?

This bathroom will be shared by my 4 year old and 4 month old. It isn’t very large and feels especially crowded because of the door that provides privacy to the toilet and tub. We are replacing all the tile and are wondering if it would be a good idea to completely remove that door/wall that splits the bathroom up and just have it be an open room with the sinks/toilet/tub all together. We do have another bedroom that our oldest might eventually want to move to when he is older with his own bathroom.

Have you seen a jack and hill bath without a privacy door/wall separating the toilet. Would this be a bad idea to remove it?

Tha ks for any advice!

If they are both boys, probably not an issue. But if the other child is a female, I'd keep the door.

Would you consider turning it into a hall bath instead of a JnJ?

I would keep it as is. The door will be open most of the time and removing it doesn't gain that much space. Plus the pocket door hides the view of the toilet. I would change the door on the lower bed/bathroom to a pocket door.

We’ve been considering the same thing for our J&J bath. A few extra inches around the toilet and a more open feeling are winning out over modesty.

Thanks for everyone’s ideas and comments. It feels so crowded with that wall and I know that removing it wOn’t make the space any larger but it would make it feel more open. I’m just afraid that I am doing something that others would find odd.

As as far as the hall bath comments, do you mean to put in a door where the cabinets currently are? That is a great idea but i am not sure how it would looK from the hallway with 3 doors at the end of the hallway. I appreciate all the ideas. It is espeocially

helpful hearing from those who have this layout in there current home. It seems those that have it are considering opening up the space as well.

Thank you all for yoir advice and ideas!

I find a 5 ft vanity is not long enough for 2 sinks as you don't have much storage. I would close the 2 bedrooms' walls and put a door in the alcove. You can have a one private full bathroom with no wall inside and put a single vanity on the south wall with more counter top and storage. Imo, it would be a lot more functional and feels less cramped.

My sister has this set up. It works really well other than the double sinks. There is only one bank of drawers and no counter space. I would switch it to 1 sink with 2 banks of drawers (one for each kid) and room to put their stuff out.

When I use that bathroom at my sisters house it's a balancing act to just have my makeup and other items out at the same time.

I do agree that a hall entry for the shared bathroom would be better and suggested this to my husband and kids. “You would have more wall space to hang you things if we remove that door!” My idea was voted down by all. I also suggested changing the doors to pocket doors, but this too was vetoed by all.

@kcamp1980 I too hope that someone who has this change will comment. I do worry a tiny bit about resale.

Thank you for your comments. I appreciate you asking your family what they would prefer! I do think once my son is a little older he will probably want to move to another bedroom that has its own smaller bathroom attached to it so then our daughter would have this bathroom to herself.

At first, I was really unsure of the hall bath idea but I am really warming up to it and so is my husband! We are going to measure to see how much space we would have for the length of the vanity if we moved it tot he wall next tot he toilet right now.

I loved the idea of the jack and Jill originally but I think it works out better when laid out differently than ours is. A more open space (like we would get if we made this a hall bath) would be really nice. We plan on being in this house for the long term so whatever works for our family best is our priority for now. I would love more hanging space in the bathroom and more space I. The kids rooms without the extra door heading into the bathroom. The linen closet is also in the hallway so they would have to head into the hallway to get towels for a bath anyway.

Thanks so much for your and everyone elses input as well!

Looks like you can fit a similar size vanity with minimal changes...

Not sure if this would work but for a bigger vanity and keeping the pocket door...

We are leaning toward this option. We are going to look today to see if we can have the door centered on the wall for the bathroom entry. That door is seen down a long hallway and we want to make sure it looks like it has always been there and isn’t a change we made, if that makes sense.

The vanity is 65 inches long currently.

A hall bathroom is preferable to a J&J so that would be my first choice as for the wall separating the toilet it is pretty useless , takes up space and IMO no one should be using the toilet while some one else is in the space period. I think bathrooms have toilets they are seen so what it.s a bathroom. I think as the kids get older the hassle with a J&J will get worse and worse. do this now and be done.

Do you think it will look ok to look down that hallway and see a potentially open bathroom door? I’m sure my kids will never close it and once you walk in through the front door and look to the right that hallway is visible and the bathroom door would be at the end of the hallway.

The hallway/bathroom is ar the top of the photo between bedroom 2 and 3.

I think that if the hallway is not right in front of the entrance door, it will be fine.
