What color should I paint the center island cabinet (now navy blue)?

I'm asking for input on small island paint color. We just changed out all countertops to a white w/gray vein quartz. The upper/lower cabinets on the stovetop/microwave/oven wall and the larger island with sink/dishwasher are painted a soft white. Its all one large area with dining area and living room, all walls are a light gray. My style is on the contemporary side. Do I need to have similar colors in the area mentioned that is near the kitchen to make everything blend? I'm considering shades of blue or teal that would pop in an almost white kitchen with black appliances (blue is already in my living room area) or a deep shade of a blue red (which is not currently in the living room area, I just like that color). I have gray, blues, teal throw pillows as well a medium color pimento or terra cotta color pillow. The leather sofa is described as 'greige', both chairs are fabric; one chair is solid slate gray fabric and another is several shades of gray circles. I'm considering replacing the rug in living room with a gray rug of some sort (if I go with blue cabinets, I'll look for something with blue in it a well a gray). The door you see in the background will be painted white along with trim. I'm open to ANY suggested color for the cabinet. I just feel there is no accent color to peak of in those room. Thank you for your input.

It doesn't look to me like your cabinetry is in need of a change given the other colors you have in place, but you can always add accent colors with accessories. Some people like to put out bright towels or countertop decor. There are a number of places that sell colorful trivets which are always valuable for sparing your countertop from heat, and other people like to use brightly colored teapots or other serving dishes. That way you can play around with color without needing to invest in an expensive and semi-permanent cabinetry paint job.

You might want to just paint the island’s floor molding to be same color as island cabinet.

Thank you to both of your comments.

Jj J, currently, there is no moulding on that cabinet but that gives me a good idea to add some.

Silverlined, your suggestion helps my issue with not having "color" in the room, I like that. Looks like I'll have to decide what color to bring in to that space for a cohesive pop of color.

I love being able to use this forum to help me make decor/design decisions. I do tend to "stay inside my box" for such things.

This is my all-time favorite website that features a lot of non-standard kitchens with a wide array of colors and accessories added, which you might find helpful for inspiration: https://www.atticmag.com/category/kit/

Attic Mag is a website compiled and edited primarily by a lady named Jane (don't know last her name) who was very active in the GardenWeb forums that are now a part of Houzz. She went by @rococogurl and she had quite an illustrious career as an editor at several different interiors magazines in the United States. You can read more about her here: http://lowtidehighstyle.blogspot.com/2010/07/women-of-atticmag.html

I found that website through archived GardenWeb posts and looked at every one of the kitchen articles as I was designing my own kitchen and picked up quite a few pieces of inspiration.

Thank you for the added background. I'm loving perusing her site. Always looking for more and more inspiration. I'm afraid I'll never finish decorating; I like to change things up pretty often.

In that case, it's good to redecorate with items that are easily added and removed. Jane features her own kitchen in there among several posts, and she seems to be a person who transcends the fads and pulls from a lot of historical and international contexts in her favorite choices.

yes, I saw her country house on that site. VERY beautiful. Even tho I don't use that type decor, I still get ideas. Thank for that link.

Jane's personal kitchen has a lot of Scandinavian and European influence I think, though she did throw in an antique dish cabinet that makes the area look rustic. She chose a Dornbracht tall faucet for the sink as I recall, and I saw a comment she made at Houzz afterward that made me think maybe her faucet hadn't turned out to be the best choice for her--still good, just maybe not as great as she'd hoped. I just ordered a couple of Brizo articulating faucets for my kitchen after much research and think I will be happy with them. The most memorable kitchen for me from Attic Mag's archives was the one with the working fireplace oven in the middle. It was such a simple kitchen with great functionality, and I think it was in Italy somewhere that she rented while on vacation. We really don't do kitchens like that here in the USA on any regular basis anymore now that gas and electric stoves have taken over.

I had to look up a Brizo articulating faucet; never heard of those. Ive seen and used something similar (I worked in a test kitchen at the time). I love a bit of Italian influence but I'm pretty contemporary. I could get an accessory that would say "Italian" tho. If I could find something appropriate in Denver, CO - LOL. I've seen some beautiful platters to display with a small eagle...thought on that?

Denver and the surrounding vacation suburbs seem to me to be one of the shopping hubs of the USA, and I would think among all the gift shops you could probably find anything you wanted. I'm in Texas, and we still have mandatory mask orders in place and some business restrictions, so store traffic is at a minimum right now with some stores going out of business. I think with individual decor tastes it depends on what appeals to you with the consideration that your tastes may change over time. My mother had a painted ceramic bald eagle on display in our family room during my growing up years, and I remember it fondly. I think any sort of nature-based decor would fit well with a Denver home.

I just realized I was looking at the curve-topped island in foreground vs the navy one behind. My comment was for the curve topped island and yes, the one behind would look more consistent with the other if keeping both.

Do you need to keep that small island in the middle? Is there flooring underneath it?

Yes, I want to keep the small middle island. There is no hardwood floor under that small island.
