Do I need wall decor on both of these walls?

These are photos of my dining room. My question is regarding the two bare adjacent walls. I had "complementary" photos on them which I just took down and would love to put up the modern simple Louise Gray quilt (48" x 36")shown in the photo on the wall to the right. I chose that wall as it is the one you see when you enter the front door of my home - center hall colonial, dining room to the right, living room to the left. My question is: Do I need anything on the joining wall to the left? If so, I would not want a photo/picture - it would bother me to have a quilt on one wall and a picture on the other. So I was thinking of objects - you know, perhaps a few wall vases? But could I just leave it blank? THANKS!

I think your room needs more than that quilt can provide in terms of texture and interest.

I'd add a mirror to the short wall and art to the long wall.

    Not a Pro.

    I agree with @BeverlyFLADeziner.

Sounds like the quilt is special to you.

Have you tried it on the table with a centerpiece? Remove before company use.

A round mirror might work but keep it simple. I would pick one large piece vs smaller items/vases.

Agree that quilt doesn’t have enough color or texture. Also agree should try it on the table & lay at angle with 48” length going end to end. A black & white centerpiece would make it shine

Thanks all for your input. Quilt aside - what are thoughts on leaving left wall blank regardless of what goes on the right wall? Or, do BOTH walls need something?

Hmm - I think you have 3 walls as I’d consider the shorter wall with stairs in it too. I’m guessing the wall we can’t see has a window. So I think yes, you should put something on the wall with sconces & the longer of the two walls making corner. People sitting with back to window or to the long wall should have a view of something besides a blank wall.😊

You have some serious competition going on with the (hung too high) chandelier and the wall sconces. Consider a small chandelier. Maybe you can use yours as an island light in the kitchen?

I agree with @er612 regarding a round mirror. A mirror on that wall will reflect the window, which will be a nice touch and it won't fight with the quilt. Re: the quilt, I suggest framing it in a nice box frame rather then just hanging it straight on the wall. That way it will look like intentional art rather than, for example, a cloth hung temporary to cover a hole.

Definitely ok to leave the left wall blank.

Does the room bring you joy when you walk into it and it has no wall art? I would be yearning for a painting, but I love art. I don't have any bare walls in my home. That doesn't mean that I am right or wrong, just that I decorate to make me happy and you should do the same.

I'd say yes. get a nice piece of art for in between the sconces, and do something on the other wall. no quilt

Maybe the quilt could be a feature on the stair landing or in a bedroom?

The first thing I would do is replace that light fixture. A pretty gold chandelier like the photo Beth posted would change the feeling of the room totally. Something transitional to go with your table and chairs. Then mirror between sconces to reflect chandelier and art on wall you see when entering home. Something like this. I would preserve the quilt and either drape over footboard of guest bed, or angle on bed or hang from period rod.

My logic and experience looks to “lines of sight” into and while in the room. I think (you can confirm) the short wall is the wall you see when entering the house. That is best art wall. The long wall is seen by diners and visitors entering and dining so mirror or complimentary art on that wall. I suspect other wall has window do window treatments is all you need on that wall. Art is very personal so it’s your choice on that.
