What color should we paint ceilings at the porches?

Diana Fawcett

The house color is being painted HGSW Nevermore Grey. All the trim and porches will be HGSW Fundamental White. A new front door will be HGSW Tricorn Black. Any advice for the ceilings at porches?

Thank you. Now, I’m trying to find the perfect “Haint” blue with these other colors. SW Atmospheric is looking nice to me..... or Tibetan Sky? Iceberg, Lauren’s Surprise, Soar??? So many choices. Your thoughts?

I think Tibetan Sky and Iceberg are lovely in terms of lightness, but possibly have the potential to be a little washed out, outside. It depends just how much light they receive.

You will only know by checking a sample & holding it on the same plane as the ceiling, above your head, rather than against the wall.

I think Atmospheric maybe a little too dark.

Soar and Aviary maybe worth considering.

@Marylee H agree, the Atmospheric is too dark! The SW Atmospheric color I saw in an article looked completely different than the Benjamin Moore one posted above. Thank you houssaon for posting!

I have another question maybe I can get some help with also. Since we are getting a new front door and it will be Tricorn Black, do we paint the door on upper porch (in the middle) Tricorn Black as well? Or do we paint white like the trim on the windows?

Personally I would paint it as the trim and window, then your eyes won’t stray from the focal point of your front door. 👀

That’s what I thought too. Thank you! I guess I just needed reassurance!🌻

I used BM Constellation for all my porch ceilings in our 1910 home that we just remodeled. It is very light in certain lighting and changes throughout the day. I love it. Perhaps you can get a sample.

Thank you Trailrunner D. I will get a sample of that and see! I appreciate all the suggestions!

I would paint the front door, sidelights, and door trim black. Leave the other white for now to see if you how you like it.

Hi - I believe traditionally, this would all be considered as trim and therefore all white.

I think that may also include the horizontal beam supported by the 2nd storey columns.

Have a look at the work of Old House Guy who specialises in period facades.

So, even with the depth of this area it would be all white? What we were thinking was the two boards that look like the siding would be house color then the crown molding and trim overhang and fascia would be white? Would that look off? Or wrong perhaps? Yes, the beam at top columns will be white. Here is pictures of the overhang and depth compared to the pictures of other houses that seam more flush? The very small bottom piece also connecting to the columns at lower porch would be white also. PS. The ceiling color is SW Soar! It looks great! Thank you!

This is on the inside of porch lower level. It’s getting dark outside, sorry for the poor photo.

All these examples appear to include a white beam above both the ground floor and first floor columns creating a picture frame like effect. I think you will lose that If you draw the grey down to the top of the columns.
