Furniture style mashup and annexed dining room puzzle

We've annexed our old dining room space into our living room and now have a long living room: 22'6" x13' - It's 13' to the office doors. It's another 4' between the end of the office and the kitchen island. I really don't want anything outside of the 13' footprint if possible. The end of the island is turning into shelving and wine/wine glass storage.

So much of our furniture is inherited, and we really like them but they don't seem to all go together. The pieces I am least interested in keeping are the records cabinet, rug, orange couch and the red coffee table (which my dog has scratched up). I was thinking of sanding down the red coffee table and painting it blue for now.

I struggle with the mid century chairs and everything else. I love the chairs but I like the stacking tables too. Not sure if there is an easy way to tie them together. I am also into doing changes over time and hunting down pieces that are interesting. Flea market finds are my favorite. I'd love to get an old console or a cool records cabinet like this: https://www.departmentchicago.com/product-page/60-record-cabinet. Not opposed to painting the yellow a different color either. But it has to go with my kitchen.

I feel like I am not using this space well and the pieces can't work together. You can see my dog has claimed the old orange 60s recliner and after moving things the 100th time, I have no place for it. And please ignore the hall photos - I'm in the process of taking them down. We've also got all our Halloween decor out.

I don't want to go whole hog mid century but not sure how to avoid it.

I absolutely love the sofa. If you could put one of chairs on other side of coffee table to face other chair, it would be good. Then you could lower the tv to eye level. Some type of corner console would be good.

What was the plan when you annexed the space ? I would start by finding a much better place for the TV and it needs to be hung much lower. So los ethat piece the TV is on for sure . What are the 2 cabinets on either side of the piano for? The 2 choirs need space so one on eiter side of the sofa .The cahir facing the kitchen needs to have a different space . The coffee needs replacing maybe witha MCM one in a boomerang shape . You need much better lighting and all the stuff off the mantel. All the art is hung way too high . Use the stacking tables as one end table for the sofa. I think the idea of the bookcase on the backside of the kitchen is too me a bad choice for any kind of storage. ans also right in a walkway. The lamp on the bookcase is too large for there . Maybe post a to scale plan of the room and we can play a bit with the space.

I love your space and your furnishings!

I also love the green, yellow, blue landscape on the wall! Have you considered using that as an inspiration for style and colors in the room.......

I think I missed it, but will this be a living/dining room combo or just a living room? Can you clarify? Also possible to flip the dining area with the living area? Do you use the fireplace in the winter months and is it gas or wood burning.....

agreeing with Patricia, I think, that deciding where to put the TV in relation to the sofa should be your first step.....if you need to rewire for perfect location, then that is part of your design process.

Sit down and set up a detailed budget so you do not get derailed on something you love but has no relation to what you want for the room.....

Personally I think the TV height should be about center of TV 30 inches from the floor, or average height person's eye height while sitting on the sofa, so you can generally look straight at the screen and see everything on it, but that is just me!

    Thanks for your answers!

Thank you for your comments - the space is now strictly a living room/family room. Aside from the kitchen, this is the only place where we can hang out. We've been thinking of setting up the guitar on a stand near the piano and a chair. Both of my kids play often. The speakers on either side of the piano are non-negotiable. They are my husband's pride and joy. So maybe that end can be a music kind of space.

100% agree that the TV needs to come down. Just not sure where to put it once we bring it down. The lawyer bookcase under the TV can be moved to our office. That doesn't need to stay.

I really love the fire hydrant lamp but also not sure where to put it. What would be a good storage cabinet for a receiver, turntable and records? Once I move that off of the speaker, I can move the trumpet lamp on top of the speaker?

My husband moved the recliner across from the chairs so he can open it properly. The two chairs, recliner and sofa area doesn't all seem to fit. Agree that coffee table needs to be replaced. My husband is reluctantly willing to get rid of his orange recliner but it would make the whole family sad.

And thank you Susan for your comments on the painting. We love it and the colors as well. Definitely like the idea of using these colors as inspiration.

Have you thought about putting your T be above that nice send bookcase that you have your records at And picking up some of that pile on the floor and putting it in the bookcase to and I like where you move the chair but that other chair by the TV were is crammed in the corner Maybe move it out by that other little coffee table you have and if you put that little table over by the Orange chair on one of the sides
