We need help with our bathroom layout for a 4-headed family.

Hello Community, for years I am using houzz as an inspiration platform. And now it happened we own a house for ourselves. I really hope to get the missing inspiration for our (as far my researches show) unconventional bathroom-floor-plan (a L-Shape).

We are a family of four: 33y, 34y, 4y, 1y. By the time the kids will grow up and there will be a hassle who's the first in the bathroom ;) we love modern bathrooms, but we've been busy for days yet to find a nice layout.

This is why we came up with the following idea:

  • a separated guest toilet
  • a separated guest shower room (we've a big family on both side and expect a lot of overnight guest plus imagine the kids are turning 16 years)
  • a master bathroom with bathtub (especially for the kids) and two sinks. Plus my wife wants the toilet to be hidden as much as possible.
  • an extra laundry room with a dryer and wash-machine
  • (in case that you wonder: the red door at the top is going to be the way to the guest-room)

We are pretty free with the dimensions for the master bathroom, because plumbing and walls are made. Now coming back to my entry point: We love modern bathrooms! But this option (out of a lot...) still seems to miss something.

I appreciate every comment, tipp or inspiration. We are a little bit lost at this point and no new ideas coming up.

Best, Toby + family

(PS: I am german - so I apologize for any grammar/typos upfront :))

I was going to try to draw that out for you, but I have more questions: Is that a door drawn in your bathtub? Did you mean the plumbing and walls are not done? Can the laundry room location/size change? Where is the master bedroom? And, what are the dimensions of the guest room?

Hi Kate, thanks for your comment!

I smiled a lot when reading your idea of encouragement to pee in the shower ;) We could hang a big sign there.

But if it is not directly noticeable: we separated the guest-shower from the guest-toilet because we would like to have a window in there. We expect that guests will use the toilet more often than the shower.

I tried "Sweet Home 3D" to visualize the ideas but that tool somehow shows a window very similar to a door. So I added another plan with more notes in it.

In the new plan I changed the direction of doorway for guest-rooms and laundry; but we havn't consider pocket doors yet.

    Your questions:

    1) It's meant to be a window :)

    2) Yep! We can change plumbing, walls and size/position of laundry room.

    3) Master Bedroom is located far away... on the left bottom corner.

    4) Guest area will be 5m x 3m, but it has a "-100 cm level" (which needs a staircase).

I hope this helps your inspiration.

What is the door next to the entry door?

The door next to the entry door is actually a window (but there is a staircase into the basement. Sorry for this confusion.

    a) are you building this home from scratch?
    b) is this home in Germany or the US or Canada or where?

    a) No. It is an existing house, which is going to be renovated and reorganized.

    b) it is in Germany.

Oh, okay! That changes things! As far as your question: "what's missing?", I keep getting stuck on my American perspective (It's missing a toilet! Ack!). But, I think I can still be a little helpful:

Your laundry room is mostly being taken up by room for the swinging door. Have you considered turning it into a smaller laundry closet with double bifold doors that open outward? You can give the space back to the master and the guest shower room. This could allow the master to be square instead of L-shaped giving you more freedom. Rough Sketch below.

Also, no pressure (haha) but just in case (grin) you decide to add a toilet into that guest shower (feel free to ignore me), here's how that could go... (I put the sinks separated because that's my personal preference, but you could obviously put them back together)

Don't forget the exhaust fan! :)

Hi Kate, thanks for your advice!

As we are now used to my (strange) floor plans; I'd kick in two other options I came up with last night. I am struggling with the connection between washing-table and bathtub - it somehow needs a smooth transition over corner.

    Any opinions on these ones?

You are totally right: if we are able to reduce size for that laundry room (we'd also like to use that one as a storage for vacuum cleaner, etc.) we can free space in the bathroom. I'll take yours as an inspiration.

But let me ask you in general: don't you think, it is quite practical to separate the guest-toilet from the guest-shower? I would say, especially here in hamburg, I saw this relatively often.

I'd really appreciate any tipp, we plan to start in two weeks.

Oh, and to defend my strange, non-standardized floor plan: the program generates a 3D preview that enables a virtual tour. That gives a totally good picture of the proportions :)

After a while and an estimated 101 variants later, a favorite has emerged. Is there anything else to consider? Any opinion is welcome :)

    Please note:

    - They are windows in the outer walls, not doors.

    - Objects are placed for proportion only and not our final selection

    - The black wall is still there from the existing building.
