Black & White Bathroom_gold or black accents?

last modified: 5 years ago

We had this black and white bathroom when we moved into our house 3 years ago. It had a HUGE mirror to the ceiling and spot lights in the mirror. The counter was made of arborite or something like that. It was horrible. The idea was not to spend a lot of money (because we also did a pink and grey bathroom that had very similar problems). The old colour was Revere Pewter on the walls I think. Now we have Classic Grey. We picked this colour because outside of the bathroom is BM ClayBeige and there are only about 5 paint colours with grey in it that go with the clay beige.

We took down the mirror, etc. We got a new granite counter. I attached a photo because it is not quite as all white as it looks in the photos. White with veins of grey through it. Black taps and black vanity lights. Now I feel like the cabinet has a slight creamy colour to it. We could take the drawers out and the cabinet doors off and have them sprayed black. Then if I did that could I do a very thin champagne gold framed mirror with champagne gold/brass cup pull hardware along the top row of the cabinets. 2 more where there currently are none.

I attached a print screen at the bottom. I originally was just going to do all black, change the hardware on cabinets, skinny black frame mirror, etc. But maybe the goldish shade (there are a lot of the golds that I don't particularly care for). brings it up more modern?? Any thoughts would be very very appreciated. I just can't bring myself to do the gold without some positive reinforcement.

Just on a side note:

The cabinet is 69" wide

The lights are 33" wide

I am thinking about minimum 40" width for the mirror and 30" high. That will take it to just below the new lights in black and about 2" above the backsplash of the new counter.

Thanks, Linda

I vote for gold. It warms up the room and is a classic look with black, especially with your great checkered floor.

Gold or Brass, either one will give your bathroom that pop you are seeking!

    Gold, wood as well.

I really like the inspo pic you included. I would closely follow that for your bathroom, it will look great!

Go for the gold! The contrast adds interest and makes the room look up to date. By comparison, black looks dull and drab.

Gold, only if you paint the vanity black!

Black, if you leave the vanity white.

If you do gold hardware on white, you'd then have black (faucet), gold (hardware), and nickel (lighting) in one small bathroom which are too many finishes in one room.

Vanity is definitely being painted black. I contacted a kitchen company yesterday, just waiting on cost It won't be much. only all of the fronts. My husband will do the other part. I am also wondering though what type of black paint? Matte, should it be a lighter shade of black?

to KCulbers: Yes I think so too. I have all along been thinking only black and white. Then I saw the gold with it and I LOVE it. I think the trick though is to not get it too gold.

BlueMoonInterior, I absolutely love what you said regarding the jewellery. That is so in my mind now. Just a great way of explaining it! Thank you!

Altair, thank you so much for your view. That is exactly what I am looking for. Some type of pop. My problem is I don't want it to be too brassy or too gold. I am having a very hard time finding a mirror that is large enough for the vanity in a gold trim. It is 68.5" I would like the mirror to be at least 50". I was also thinking that if I could put up a plain beveled mirror, I could still do brass hardware and picture frame for art in a very similar shade of brass / gold.

Linda - if you’re crafty - you can take a wood framed mirror or frame and paint it gold. One way I have found to add dimension to painting something metallic - is to buy craft paint in different shades of gold and sponge on the different tones. Or spray paint a base and then sponge different shades on top. Easy to practice and experiment on paper or card stock, paper plate etc.

Well to tell you the truth I am not too crafty. I found a framing place in Toronto that also sells mirrors! I just found it. I had just said to my husband that I think wood, would be nicer than metal. warmer maybe. So i was thinking to go there and get something thin, very thin wood and bring my cup-pull hardware that I have on a book shelf.- the colour is called Golden Champagne. It is much softer than say a brass or gold. It is still gold. Take it with me and have them match it! I will let you know what happens there! Thanks again though for the tip. I have a black framed large picture in my family room, that I really dislike the frame and I want to paint it kind of a silvery, bronzy colour. I just may do it now!

Rub’n Buff is a wonderful craft paint, for any surface. Very easy to use and gives a great metallic look.

Thank you so much. I have a store close by called Michael's. I will call them first to see if they have it. :)

I love the idea of a gold mirror if you can find one big enough. But someone did mention the nickel in your light fixture. That might look off. Possibly spray paint it gold too. I think your golds need to match. And I am reluctant to paint the vanity black even though its beautiful in your inspiration picture. That photo has a much quieter floor than you do. Though as someone pointed out maybe a charcoal would work rather than a solid black. You've done a great job so far. Good luck.

to mrsrmom.... thanks so much for pointing that out about the vanity light with the nickel in it. somehow I missed that previous comment. but I did notice that the one that I did the prince screen of it has a nickel faucet and the towels on the side of the cabinet are hanging on some kind of silver. I have to do something with the color of the cabinet because when I got the new counter was off on my whites. even though I brought a sample home I thought it wasn't a good choice however my husband, hate to blame it on him, insisted that it was okay. 😄. it's thrown me off now but that's over though. it definitely is pause for thought.

Yes, your inspiration picture has a nickel faucet. Overall that bathroom has 2 metals: gold and nickel. It's just a matter of how many metals since your faucet is black. I think 3 metals is too many and you need to narrow it down to 2 - in your case since you have the black faucet it would be black and gold rather than gold and nickel. . Probably just have to ignore the toilet flush handle. Unless you want to go back to a nickel/chrome faucet....... Both the gold and the black are trendy so in a few years you may want to change them out. So it might be nice to keep some items more timeless.

    To msrmom:

I am attaching my other bathroom that is not quite 100% complete yet. Still have art to go.. But in this one we went with Brushed Nickel right down to the toilet flush handle. My vanity lights and the hanging light are white linen. both with brushed nickel. I feel like I am really stuck now on the black and white bathroom. I was reading that the gold could go out of style and the black, but I have had the hole cut into the counter so it's too late. I absolutely love the brushed nickel. It is a beautiful colour. What I could do is change the hardware to brushed nickel, toilet flusher and then maybe some pictures like the attached.

This is not my favourite for art, but it got me thinking about silver type finish.
