need advice on finishing great room decor

Hello all,
We just got a new sectional and rug. Now I would appreciate advice on how to finish the room. I would like to add new art behind the sofa but I’m not sure what colors to pull out of the rug. I would like to update the fireplace mantle decor. I also want to add a small table or perhaps nesting rectangular tables next to the sofa end.
And I’m thinking of adding curtains on the sliding glass doors. It’s a west facing room that gets very hot in the afternoon. We have those small windows about the sliding glass door and the light that comes through there from 3-5 pm is sharp and hits into the eyes of anyone sitting there.

Eventually I will repaint the whole room white, the ceiling is white.

Coincidence that I saw that one tonight...

I think your new art is beautiful!...get it framed will make a world of difference...

Julie, do you think my new art gives the room a bra by vibe? I don’t want that and that is what’s bugging me about it.

Beach vibe is what I was trying to say above.

Looks abstract landscape to me...the colors are calming but very pretty in the room..are you wanting something more exciting?

Maybe? I light want more color. This pic I have in the room right now looks great in my bath so I might be looking for a reason to buy a new one for the living room.

I think a part of me feels like the rug is so vibrant that I light a vibrant piece on the wall. Or some green or rust on the wall.

Julie, have you ordered from Great Big canvas before? They have a lot of large prints and I can frame them on a floating canvas frame. They do have a lot of recent negative reviews so I am hesitant to purchase from them.

Been ordering from them for years...my clients have had no issues...Love Art.com too..they have most of the same art.

Thank you for your feedback Julie. They have so many options, I’m excited about trying them out.

I ended up getting a different piece of art for behind the sofa. I like this one, it’s serene and the colors I want to bring out in the sofa.
Now the question- my husband thinks it should be higher bc of the switch on the left side near the bottom of the pic. He thinks the bottom of the picture should be above the top of the switch plate. That does not bother me. I feel like he likes pictures higher up than me. Thoughts?

I always have to do a search when this question arises. These are the guidelines I found today. I’ve read: Center of art should be 57”-60" off the floor...eye level for most. Over sofa, I have read either a 4”-6” or 8”-10” gap. If you were to lean back, would your head bump against the art? Don’t want that. [It can also depend somewhat on your ceiling height which doesn’t seem to be a factor for you. For very high ceilings, art should be in middle third of wall. Including that as it is a question I see popping up occasionally.] Hope this is helpful. A designer may advise differently for specific situations, but this is generally what I see posted here on Houzz.

Thank you dsimber. That is helpful. I kept It 8” from sofa bc the ceilings are higher than normal. My question is the light switch. Do you see it in the lower left corner of the pic. My husband feels the art should be above the light switch bc it’s distracting.

Seems low to me - try a bit above switch?

  • PRO

Middle of art should be between 62-65” from floor..with your high ceilings maybe lean towards higher end...it is too low right now you will be knocking it with your head...it seems a bit too white with all your warm white in the room..but if you love it than you all all set.

I am going to add colorful pillows to add some color. I like that it’s calm and it adds warmth, I do love it.

Maybe adds some colorful pillows with white instead of off white I think it will pull it all together.

I was just playing around with what I have. I wish I could find a local store with a good selection of pillows. Everything is online now and then it’s a hassle to return if they don’t work out.

I love your art too, but I think your paint color is throwing it off.

Njmomma- I agree with you. I think the next time I paint I just want white walls.

I just love the painting I had in the family room in my bathroom next to white walls.

Your pillows looks cute! I would change your throw... white with some blue or burnt orange in it...

Bathroom looks great!! I love the art there.

That canvas looks great in your bathroom. Nice tub, too! Back to FR, the throw is nice, but my eye goes straight to the pattern instead of seeing the art. Wouldn’t a solid-colored throw help focus on the art?

Dsimber- good feedback on the throw. I have been looking for a solid color rust one.
Julie, I will try a cream/white with rust throw as well to see how it looks.

Old thread but I am still trying to finish this room. Things have changed, as the kids are no longer homeschooled due to Covid, so kids stuff is gone.mi was reviewing the thread and noticed I have made some of the suggestions.
@er612- I did add curtains and get the mirror you recommended in 2020.
We got lower chairs a couple of months ago. We got a frame tv and the old media cabinet is gone.

  • last year

I have moved the chairs closer to the sofa as the kids are older now and they need less space to play on the carpet.
We just had the room painted and these pics don’t have the art up behind the sofa.

I got a frame TV thinking I would leave it open underneath and put a Haittie cabinet (fro
arhaus) by the window where the large plant is currently.
Someone suggested I put a console under the TV instead, so now I am considering that. Perhaps something open and not as weighed down as the media console we use to have.

  • last year

I don’t like that black lamp next to the sofa and will get rid of it. It’s hard to adjust at the right level and frustrating.
I would like some lighting bc the recessed lighting ends up being too much, and the light in the fan is sometimes not enough.

    1. I need help finding a console under the tv.
    2. Or would the Haittie cabinet work where the plant is? That was is 59” wide from window to doorway. And I am looking at the 36” Hattie.
    3. Would like to get some throw pillows. The swivel chairs need an 18” pillow to be comfortable.
    4. If I do a console under the TV, I could do a large vertical art piece on wall where plant is now.
    • I can’t do tv on fireplace wall. The room is west facing and the windows get tons of light. The space in front of the fireplace is also a walkway from the room behind the pocket door to the kitchen.

    • I have also considered moving the fireplace to the wall where the tv is. Maybe a electric fireplace under the tv. In that case I could take out the built in to the left of the tv wall if it would crowd that area. We will have the space where the fireplace is now to either have as an alcove or to put a built in there.

    @homeinteriorswithease- thoughts on this room?

It’s a great room connected to our kitchen. The kitchen will get remodeled a approx 2 yrs, so the changes I mentionedtaking out the gas fireplace behind the chairs and adding a electric fireplace under the tv) can be done as a part of that remodel.

Here is the art I have over the sofa right now and a picture of the art I am thinking of replacing it with.
While I still like the one I have, the new one is more fun and colorful.

Hi..what is the width of the tv wall? what is the TV size?

  • PRO

I think you need a bigger rug! it should go all the way over to fireplace only about a foot of wood should show…it will really make a difference on the size visually and incorporate the furniture on that side of the room all cohesive on the rug.

  • last year

@Julie, the TV is 65”. I would love a bigger rug but it’s hard to find large sizes. Currently I have 10x14. I could flip it the other way and that would make it go across but then it won’t reach as far on the tv side.

What is the width of the wall tv is on?

I think it would be worth looking into getting carpet cut to fit the room perfectly and have them bind it…most carpet stores will come out and measure for you no charge. I think it would really look nice.

The wall the tv is on js approx 11 ‘. I drew it on a sheet and it’s not exact but pretty close. The opening from great room to entry way (behind the sofa) is 74”. The built in is about 54” wide.
The room is about 20’ wide and 17’ deep from tv wall to sofa.

Question about the console- the TV is 58.5” wide, should the console be 72, or would 60” work? I want to make sure we can get into the cabinet to the left of the TV but don’t want it to look too small.
I like this RH console below bc the legs have visual interest. It also comes in 60 or 72” width.

I’m open to console suggestions as well. The TV is 38” from the botttom and I don’t have wiggle room to move it up. When the installer put it up he asked me where I wanted the box cutout, towards the top of the TV or bottom and I had it placed towards the bottom.
I don’t need to put anything in the console, just the visual interest of having it there.

@HomeInteriorswithEase- if I would large carpet, should I do a neutral beige? I have not visited a carpet store in decades so no idea what to pick.
Should the carpet be all of the great room, from under the TV to fireplace and all the way to the end of sofa?

  • last year

It comes in a variety of colors, so I am open to blk as well.

Another table I like from crate and barrel. Comes in charcoal and natural and is 66” wide.

This one is more traditional and it’s 64” wide. Comes in a variety of finishes so blk is an option too.

I always try to avoid tv over the fireplace but your room needs it! would you ever consider it?..than the big sectiional could float in the room faceing the fireplace.

  • last year

Sectional facing the fireplace and chairs angled at the fireplace

  • last year

@HomeInteriirsWithEase- I can see how that would be ideal, bc that would make the fireplace the focal put and connect the room. However, we have a complicated situation. My daughter with special needs is in the room through the doorway by the TV. We need to be able to go from the bathroom (behind the built in) to the room where she is in via a bath chair that rolls. Hence I need an easy path from that room to the bathroom. If the sofa is there, I would have to leave at least 3 ft between the wall and the sofa, it would be an awkward layout. Not to mention that the kids and DH like to watch TV from the kitchen table and that is behind the sofa. I have to make the best of the current layout. We can plan to love the fireplace when we remodel the kitchen. I ha e thought about a electric fireplace under the TV.

I tried to show the bath chair route in drawing below.

The room is also west facing we we get lots of light coming from those windows in the afternoon.
