Just moved in. Want a more contemporary space with colors/lighting

Hello all,

I just moved into a place in AZ, and want a more contemporary feel without redoing a ton of things right off the bat. My main focus will be the living room / kitchen. I am ok with redoing the entire kitchen/appliances, but want to be budget friendly. One thing I cant seem to overcome is the flooring choices the PO had. Can anyone offer suggestions to the kitchen / living room in terms of colors / trims to make it more modern. I want flooring to be a last resort, but am open to it.

I like light greys / super light blues, thats what my previous 2 houses had. leaning towards that with this one as well.

These are photos from the listing. currently no decorations in the kitchen, and only a light beige sectional in the living room. I'll try and get current pics when i am home again on Sunday.

Those walls and doorways and arches and beams are probably all structural but I think off the bat that should be the first thing you change! It’ll make a massive difference. After that I definitely think that kitchen can be reconfigured to serve you and your family a lot better the living room will really be cosmetics, just new furniture I’d go with a sectional new rug, coffee table... the regulars

I don't understand the hate for 2 1/4 inch oak hardwood. It wears like iron (my 110 year old house has what I think is the original hardwood) and you never have to worry about having trouble finding flooring that matches if you need to replace some or extend the flooring into an addition, or say, your kitchen. I get that the amber color doesn't suit everyone, but it's startling the degree to which I tune out the color of my floor when I'm in my house. It just is. Plus you will have rugs and furnishings, and the floor won't be as in-your-face as it seems in photos.

Unfortunately its not hardwood but LVP (although I prefer it since I have 2 dobermans)

Honestly dont want to change the floors. The meaning behind my post was for a color palate for furniture/walls/rug to make the floor colors in the kitchen/living room feel more contemporary, specifically in my home. I have seen a few very nice examples of this color floor but would like more specific CC for my place. Especially in my kitchen. I dont hate the floors. I want to make everything else work with it for a contemporary look

The previous owners already tried to make it look more contemporary, and you see how that went. You say you like gray and light blue, not sure how you could make it anymore gray/light blue than it is now.

Is it empty now? It seems that without all their overstuffed and outdated furniture, the space is really already what you say you like. I think when you outfit it with more modern furniture, accessories and such, you won't find it so bad. I actually think it's a nice wall color - works with the floor, appears cool in that hot Arizona climate - is it in good shape?

Move in, live there a while, then decide what you need to do.
