Kitchen update update

So my countertops are drying.

I bought a paint sample of Revere Pewter; but could they have mixed it wrong? it just looks like a pale gray, not at all like my pantry shelves. I have a spreadsheet of all the paints I've used and it says the pantry shelves are Revere Pewter, but they look much different.

I ordered these sconces from Shades of Light , and my confirm says it could take 14 days just to process the order (?!) The shape of the shade is not dissimilar from my milk glass pendant shades over the island and breakfast table. I don't know if i will decide they protrude too much; if so not sure at all what I'd choose. I have brass knobs on the stove and some aged brass hardware.

I also like the look of swing arm sconces, so I ordered those just to see, even though I was pretty sure I needed higher ceilings. I think that was borne out, as shown below, NOTE: I AM NOT GOING TO USE THE LIGHTS PICTURED BELOW, OR ANY LIGHTS THAT ARE ON ARMS and I AM NOT USING LIGHTS that ARE NOT HARDWIRED. This did give me a feel for what it will be like to have sconces, and I think i'm a thumbs up on adding sconces. Oddly, not because I am convinced my kitchen is too dark now (at least not when I put all the extant lights on) but because i like the added visual weight above the counters.

Two more questions --- I am thinking if I paint the island base RP, then maybe I would paint the window muntins RP. But, if I paint the window muntins RP, do I have to continue that with other trim, and with the doors to the DR, and all the way to the breakfast room windows? I don't want to do that.

Last, little question. I do like the idea of repeating the black of my Lacanche range somewhere.(thanks JT et al). I bought a new shiny black toaster. And while I don't want to repaint my white rangehood, I think I could buy a black clock and put it there? Any ideas? I like schoolhouse but I think I need a black face clock. Ideally round, and it has to be 12" or less in diameter to fit.

TIA!

Black dial school house clock from Ikea. If I have a clock, I prefer a schoolhouse clock.

How long have your pantry shelves been painted? Paint oxidizes to some degree over time. Would that perhaps account for the difference in color? While the painter is here next week, he is going to repaint two walls in my kitchen. I’m not changing the color, just freshening it up. Although I know the name of the color, I’m going to take a sample to the paint store to be matched because it is 6 years old.

I don’t know that I would repaint the muntins to match the island. Don’t they match the window trim now? Did I miss a new TKO trend - again?

Love the Shades of Light sconces. I also like the swing arm sconces but understand why you are not using them.

    Thanks for the update update.

Have you actually put the sample paint on a canvas to compare? When comparing the paint in the can to the shelves it may look different. Love the sconces and also like the truncated style with black shade. My choice would be to leave the muntins as is.

Just paint the island. It doesn't have to be repeated.

What about painting the island black.

If you're adding wall sconces, that might be one way to add uplighting...what you're looking at now is shining the light downward only.

I ordered my swing arm wall lamps in October and they won't be arriving until early Dec. Thank you covid.

I would absolutely paint your range hood black! Or maybe a very dark charcoal. I recently saw a picture of a kitchen with white cabinetry and a black range hood that was absolutely stunning. The range in that kitchen with stainless steel, but it did look wonderful.

Most of the new lighting in our house came from shades of light. I like their designs, and they are well priced compared to similar items from circa lighting. However, they do take a long time to arrive :-( My Bathroom lights took about a month I think.

BLF, I guess it is repeated since the pantry is nearby. I don't really want to paint the island black .... the starting point for the entire project is to lighten everything up! I'm thinking of black as an accent only.

Arapaho, I painted a board. Not sure if it's easy to tell here but my shelving is much warmer.

BBSTX, Big fan of schoolhouse and I have that in Maine. But the motivation here is I already have a clock that I like, but wanted to add black. For it to be worthwhile in advancing my black accent quest, it has to have a black face IMHO.

So glad no one wants me to paint the muntins! (btw I actually meant all the window woodwork). The paint is 10yrs old, so i might expect some change, but OTOH it is in pantry with no windows. Also, I have touched up other paint in the house that is 10yrs old. by using the same color, so IDK.

Annie, I can't find a sconce with uplighting that I think fits stylistically? It needn't match my pendants but I think it should relate? Reminds me I took pics of the cabinet interior (below), but I am unlikely to add strips of lighting there *and* the sconces esp. since, unlike my spot for sconces, there is no electricity nearby. The odd thing about the pendants it they are in stock they just need 14 days to grab them from the warehouse and then ship them.

Ah thank you for the pics...I see your situation now. No face frames. The only way to use the strip lighting would be up top on the inside of the inner track...if the shelves are recessed enough, it would cascade some light down from above to skim the fronts of the cabinets.

Re sconces, hard for me to choose as your taste is so different from mine, but if you had something more candle-like or with a fabric shade rather than the solid metal, it would add brightness to the room.

I'm kind of liking a single swoop...

On this one I'd probably change the shade to something less formal:

I like this sconce that has just a little brass on it. I’d mount it as an up light.

If you’re still not sure of my idea of painting the range hood dark...how about dark tile w/dark grout ?

Maybe not this but like this in a hand glazed?

I added a long skinny brass handle to the painted black hood.

Still like a dark wall across the range as it will look nice in reality photos, stylish but appropriate.

Jterri, This entire exercise is about lightening up the room. I do like the idea of picking up the black, but really, truly, I am not adding black other than as an accent.

Annie, I would be on board with an uplight but I think it has to relate either to the shape of my pendants, or the material. I don't see that shape in uplights. I will look for uplights with milk glass but might they look bathroom-y?

Hmm, here is an uplight in aged brass (doesn't look aged but lets assume). Perhaps it relates in its simplicity? can even add a black linen shade or grasscloth.

Doesn't read kitchen at all but maybe it the shades had like IDK, toile piping?

I mentioned the truncated sconce from SoL that looks open at the top. Shade is black with brass.

I think you had shown it in the other thread as a possibility.

    .

Paint color definitely looks off. Are the shelves removable to take one to paint store to match it ?

I mentioned painting the island black to limit the # of changes across the floor. To me the kitchen seems bright and warm. I am with you on the hood - keeping it to blend - not stand out.

Yes, I can take the shelves in. In re the light, i do like that one but it is too big ... keep in mind most K lighting goes above a sink; this will on the wall flanking windows, so much more "in your face."

I'm starting to wonder about the quest for black, because I adjoining the breakfast room which has royal blue and white ,,,,

I have analysis paralysis now. Sigh.

I think im getting these (above).

Does a black clock add anything?

Although this is a hideous mock-up and bad attempt at scale, this sconce from Shades of Light would really kick out some brightness.

re. Paint. When we did our remodel in 2012, we also had the house rewired. That meant we had to paint everything. I loved my Behr color from 2004 and wanted to repeat - read: touch up only.

The "paint guy" said that he would use the same formulation for the color, but that Behr had reformulated the base. So we got something that was close, but had more yellow in it from the original color and had to repaint everything.

I've learned to expect that when we paint again, we'll either need to change the color or change our expectations. In the meantime, we haven't tried to touch up anything (in fact I can't remember if I even kept some touch up paint!).

Can I say I'm kind of back to matisse blue especially now you said your breakfast room has royal blue? I think those window frames in a very light muted blue would be delightful.

I know that's a lotta color though for SOME of us.

I almost forgot, too, that the back of the inside of my cabs is a Palladian Blue wash.

Jterri, they skew a little asian to me, and may also protrude too much. I have three diff sconces on the way now ,, maybe it'll just be whoever gets here first, LOL

    SEE? Hahaha.

I just saw someone use black electrical tape to see how black muntins would look,,,,,hoping this will give you a chuckle 😊

I like that sconce...I was looking at that one too...

Arapaho, that black and brass light you posted above....have that in black and chrome in one bathroom and blue and chrome in another. Love them.
