What colour sofa for living room... and other ideas?

I'm struggling with choosing the colour for a new sofa. I appreciate your input!

I've decided on a warm tone in the beige/ brown shades but not sure if I should go light on the sofa or a darker shade of brown. I will befurnishing the whole living room, with the exeption of the carpet, starting with the sofa. I will add a large canvas art piece behind the sofa and different cushions. Thoughts or ideas about the rest of the living room decor are welcome. Thanks!

Ann

    Is the wall color staying?

    Yes it is

Use the rug as your guide. I would go taupe.

I would start by turning the carpet the other direction. I think a color for the sofa like about the shade of the hide covered chair freedomplace posted would look wonderful. It's such a rich, classic caramel color and always reads (in leather) as more expensive than darker leathers to me - don't know if you are considering leather. I also like the lighter color she posted with your wall color. I'd just be sure to select something warmer than your current color.

Thanks for your suggestions and pics. I like the idea of a deeper richer brown to accent the walls. I wasn’t going to get leather because of my cats with their claws but I do like the contrast with the warmer tones. I wasn’t sure if there was too much brown in the room already and to get the lighter colour with darker cushions instead. Maybe a medium brown to compliment and balance the fireplace?

Your wall color looks goldish and your floor has red tones. I don't think the wall color compliments the floor color, at least on my monitor.

The wall colour is Boardwalk BJ which actually has red in it to make more an orangey tone- may look different in photo and sunlight. what does your monitor suggest for a sofa colour katrina_ellen?

What about a medium warm grey, which would work well with walls, fireplace and hopefully your chairs (not sure if they are the same color). Add warm toned textured cushions. (I wouldn't use dark brown as the two chairs are already dark enough in room.)

You had asked for overall ideas for room, hope some of these help.

Given you have centered couch to fireplace, it is off centre on wall. What do you think of a couch or sectional in front of window with a table/lamp on one end and a floor lamp on the other. This will also help fill the empty corner near fireplace

On the wall as you enter, add a console and art

Place your two chairs facing window.

Adding a mantle would be great

Linen like drapes (@Ikea) would warm up the space

I’d change the art over the table next to fireplace and add pottery on the table

Add a large basket on the floor next to fireplace. I have the one below and it’s large and well made

I think you need some color, what not a nice sage green or blue or red and please there are 100s of leather colors besides brown or black. Live a little I have never owned a brown sofa in my 50+ yrs of marriage and I never will. I have had leather that whole time but have changed the sofas 4 times to fit differnt houses.

When I first opened this thread -- before scrolling all the way down -- I thought, "I wonder what everyone would think of burgundy? Or whatever the red is, in those floral pillows?" lol And Miss Patricia beat me to it!!! :-D

I appreciate your ideas - and yes all input is welcome!
Im changing the whole living room decor including the chairs but would like to keep the warm colours - not necessarily brown. Funny you mentioned burgundy! I was thinking if I had a lighter taupe sofa I could have deep burgundy chairs and burgundy cushions on the sofa with big canvas wall art. There is a bit of burgundy in the rug. I like grey but don’t feel it fits with all the wood. Was considering a burgundy sofa and doing lighter chairs but not sure if I’m that daring! I need end tables to fill that space as well. Hadn’t thought of the extended sofa idea... Just have to get the sofa to get going on the rest !

Maureen, I like your ideas and yes, I centered the sofa to the fireplace and rug which means if I put art above the sofa it’s off centre. So having large plants and a lamp there makes sense. And hopefully it hides the fact it’s off centre.

    Taupe sofas with burgundy chair...

    Burgundy sofa with taupe chairs...

Burgundy is so dark. Remember you can always add pops of color with cushions, which can be changed more easily than a couch.

Maybe consider a tan or caramel couch with cream, grey, rust, or gold accents. This combination will suit your wall color, work well with fireplace and feel calm and light

I agree with you Maureen and others. I'll focus on getting a warm, tan/taupe coloured sofa and add coloured accents and deeper coloured chairs. Just have to keep in mind the wall colour so that the sofa colour contrasts. It's so hard getting the right shade and texture! I just realized what you meant about the layout of the sofa. I would prefer to keep the focal point against the wall, across from the fireplace as opposed to along the window so I can add art (even though it's off balance)

You can still have art, just placed over a console table and centetered - will be more of a focal point than the couch and wall will be feel balanced/impactful.

I thought my living room layout was perfect and my sister (who teaches inferior design) suggested exchanging two pieces and it made such a difference. It’s good to move things around and test them out.

Crate and Barrell has some nice couches and these come in different colors, but suggest a bit lighter than taupe for a more modern look - they provide color swatches. Also consider the length you will need. check out cushions as well https://www.crateandbarrel.com/furniture/sofas/1
