Need advice on what color rugs would help tone down orangish cabinets

last modified: 5 years ago

I can’t stand the orangish tone of my kitchen cabinets and plan on staining them a darker color, maybe walnut, cherry or espresso...until then, any ideas on what color rugs (and any other easy decor tips/ideas) can help take away from the bright orange vibe?? I ordered these rugs online thinking they would be brown/beige/dark maroon but the maroon color looks like rusty orange which seems to make the cabinets pop even more....ugh...TIA!

I am by no means a professional, but I think the "orange" of your cabinets is being amplified by the cool color of your backsplash. When you use both warm and cool colors in one space, the eye tends to focus on the warmer color....in this case your cabinets. I am not sure a rug will fix this issue. I hope a professional can find some better advice for you.

I feel that a room needs to be either all cool colors or all warm colors to look its best. An off white rug will kind of neutralize the space. I know it sounds boring, but any other color won't do this room any favors. Warm colors: off-white, beige, tan, olive green, rust, orange, brown. Cool colors: Bright white, ice cool pastels, royal blue, red, forest green, Kelly green, dark green, black, navy, purple.

I doubt that'd fit, but there are others with 2 bulbs, etc... add more items that you do have a liking for...

What's this look like in person - interesting, shabby, handmade ?

I wish this didn't have stark white background [i'd get it too dirty].... could try dyeing window curtains a nice muted aqua or blue-grey to go with new rug --

Buy a rug with your accent color that seems casual cafe look -- add whimsy-fun plates on the wall, or for dining.. this is busy, but what I could find.

I’d just use one 6 or 8 ft runner by the sink, as three look a bit patchy. Suggest a fairly simple pattern and avoid any rust or orange. Ones below are from Overstock and are washable.

It’s not so much the tone of the kitchen cupboards, but the combination of floor, backsplash and counter that is making it feel overly earthy. When you restrain cabinets, try going with a lighter stain and changing backsplash if possible will also provide some light contrast. Hope this helps for down the road.

I would say don't try to fight the orange. ( your floor has an orangey undertone as well. I'm pretty sure that anything in the blue/grey color palette would clash badly. What you could do is try to find something that matches the beigey, brownie of your counter, and use those colors in accessories as well. A glossy beige vase with a spray of bright flowers and greenery on the island would look fantastic. ( and make the cabinets look toned down in comparison!)

Another temp. of lighting ? not the warm white...

I like my cushion mat - a color you can like /tolerate in a solid.

I agree with Beckysharp. Get those cabinets stained/painted. You can't disguise all that orange with a rug.

Woven rug idea with somewhat bright colors in it, and choose one, even lilac/purple for items with something you like about them - the shape, the material.. new curtains...

I like that last rug Everdebz posted. I think honestly the disconnect is the backsplash. I think I could see if your cabinets were stained darker and more brown (maybe the espresso you suggested) that and the flooring and countertop would be in the same color tone. I wonder before you even restain the cabinets if you just put up white or cream posterboard over the backsplash just to see how that would impact the look. I think a plain backsplash of off white, cream, tan or even white would calm it down. The floor has a pattern and the countertops have a pattern so I think you need some solid in there. I think changing the backsplash is the way to go and then I would think about restaining the cabinets a darker brown.

Then I think most of the rugs suggested would work nicely in your space.

Where can is above sink, maybe a soft brass warm metal accent. Along with another color in curtains, it'd be a good spot.

Or more light if it seems a good idea.....

Kind of really busy looking in there but a nice kitchen! Consider working on those cabinets, and if budget allows change countertops to a neutral cream. Then you could get rugs that tie into your backsplash, maybe cream or black.

You also might experiment with different types of light bulbs in your kitchen fixtures to see which would render your cabinetry less orange.

Idk how easy this is, but everybody thinks adding light over counter helps. There are other LED ways though.

Nice job on the peeling panel btw. :)

    Hmmm...another option?

I agree that the backsplash is the spoiler. It is busy and the wrong colors. Replace it with a solid neutral and then see what you think.

Idk... but undercabinet lighting might make backsplash appear more like typical stainless steel appearance [appliances]... a blend in ?

OK, let me just comment on this. Have you ever refinished wood cabs? Even if you don't plan on DIY'ing these, to pay someone to do it correctly will cost just as much, if not more, than having the cabinets painted.

Forget the cherry color. And espresso? You want darker cabinets w/that dark backsplash/counter and darker floors??

    This???

no. You already have a brown overload. forget staining the cabinets.

If you hate the orange finish, have them painted. And then either change your countertops, or change that backsplash.

If you want to try and work w/the cabs, I'd suggest getting a new countertop and tile splash.

    don't forget some hardware.

I thought of wood/ bamboo, but no.

Found both a grey and Pebble Beach shade. Would continuing a tile color, or instead the paint color -- to the sides of the window make a unified area?

    Black.

And simplifying backsplash would make a difference.

For some reason, there is a lot of shadowing on the backsplash area in these visuals. If you look at upper part of wall, you can see the tile better.

And btw, this kitchen that I am showing above is very red/orange - including the floor. Your kitchen is really not. If you can dim the overhead lighting a bit, it might be good. And look into getting some under cabinet lighting, if you don't have; it would make a difference. You could do some plug-in under cabinet lighting.

You have a nice kitchen. And wood is very much en vogue now + is classic.

Thanks to everyone (except you, Fori) for the advice. I really appreciate it! I think rugs add warmth to a kitchen and I know it won’t fix the problem, I just needed help picking a color that wont clash with the bright cabinets until I hire someone to sand/stain them. I eventually plan on replacing the backsplash. I wanted a neutral cream 6x6 tile but my husband insisted on this busy look and yes, it’s driving me crazy. Id love new countertops too but can only afford to stain the cabinets at this time. I have 3 kids in college so money is tight. Thanks again!!

i'm ok with the backsplash/cabinet combination of colors. To my eye, it's the counter tops and floor that kill the look. The beige of them. Orange and gray together are really good...but with a lot of beige not-so-much.

But since you can't ignore all that counter space, and seems like the floor will not be changing either. i agree with staining the cabinets and changing the backsplash. So off to earth-tones you go! Meanwhile, since you're stuck with orange, beige and gray, maybe you could just add a bit of steel blue to that palate to make it gel.

Thanks for the advice! We actually just had these floors installed lol I wish I had posted pics and asked for advice before then. I chose the floor color thinking we’d be getting the cabinets stained a dark cherry which would make the floor lighter. That’s what the carpenter recommended anyway...but now I’m hearing that wouldn’t be a good idea. So what color cabinets should we go with??
