Small living room mid-century modern look

I’d like to bring some style to my small condo living room. I would like it to have mid-century modern look. Planning to replace the dining table and chairs.

Could you help me please with these questions:

- Planning to add a couple of chairs to match that table. Are there any other options? Should I keep that armchair?

- What can I do with the wall behind TV?

Any other suggestions are welcome.

One thing that bugs me about t v’s; they control a space, whither it be your cute small condo or a large vaulted ceiling family room.

So, first thing is to put the t v under the counter. I see a plug (code), so there is power.

Now you can position a sofa under the window. Notice the bench in this inspiration photo. You can put that where you have your t v/console now. Nice touch to make an entry feel.

Can you take a picture of the space to the right of the TV? I can't tell what that area is. A picture of the kitchen area too - do you have stools at that counter? Can you paint the wall(s)?

The space to the right of the TV looks like this.

    The kitchen

Yes, I was thinking to remove kitchen table completely and get 2 counter chars.

@partim I can pain the wall. What would be your idea?

Everything in the space looks small, lightweight, low, and not too comfortable. Take the floating shelves to the tv wall ( maybe paint them black ) . Lose the tiny table at window. Get a larger rug by quite a bit. MUCH Larger art over the sofa/futon!!

Best would be to measure your space to a scale drawing, 1/4 inch to a foot. Alllll o fit. Upload it

I would be a nice, big comfortable couch to start.

With your current futon sofa and chair, I would consider a larger rug that has a bit more contrast.

And bring in a couple of counter stools.

    These have an MCM vibe:

*Note: Make sure to check height on stools to make sure they are a good height and fit for your counter space.

You don't have to decorate tv area. Maybe bring in a plant on right side of tv.

Would larger rug make furniture feel even smaller/lower?

The TV wall looks very empty to me. I was thinking to get something like this honeycomb shelves?

You don't necessarily need a rug. Your floor is very nice, and with the style you are going for, a rug is not a necessity. But if you are going to use a rug, you need a larger one.

However, without a rug, your room could possibly feel more open and spacious. So you could take up the rug that you have, just leave the bare floor, and bring in some nesting coffee tables. This would work with MCM styling, plus be useful.

These tables are within the style + flexible/easy to move over to the side.

This set is larger version of one above:

    Or:

The honeycomb shelves could work, so it's a personal choice. Sometimes the tv wall is better without a whole bunch of 'stuff'. A plant or two could be nice. Sometimes less is more.

But again, it all comes down to personal preference.

You aren't addressing the real problem.s Too much tiny, low, light disparate, and disconnected. Wasting money on more wall doo dads in multiples will not help. You need to think BIGGER, and perhaps wait and save money until resources allow.

Mid century always has the potential to feel light and too leggy. Rugs help a lot.

Its a "look", but which of the two rooms below suggests more sitting and lingering in comfort? A futon.......is less so, as is any armless sofa.

If you are young, strapped for cash, get large rug, large art, move the shelves, add a chair, get rid of table, add stools......AS you can.

But i would want a different sofa.

Oftentimes, a room will appear larger without a rug. And you can look up information about this online; you can search with terms such as, 'Does a rug make a room look smaller', etc. Or 'how to make a living room look larger'. There will be some varying views about this, but one of those views is that going rugless can possibly open up a space.

Example below. I would say 2nd room has a more open, spacious feeling.

And, again, with MCM styling, you do not need a rug. But if you are going to use one, you do need a larger one than what you have - as I mentioned above in my second post. The small rug that you have now actually makes the room look smaller. And the round shape is also not working.

There's an eBay seller named "dailydealswarehouse" who has a variety of futon covers in print fabrics for just $22. Here's a pic of one which might work for you just to give you an idea of possibilities:

You could go with bold print futon/quiet (but colorful) rug or bold patterned rug/solid or quiet futon. The fun thing about going with a bold futon cover is that you can get a few and change them whenever the urge strikes, and a solid or quiet pattern rug can go with a lot of things.

A busy print like the one above will make your room appear smaller. For sure. And you do not need to have a "colorful rug". I do recommend some contrast, though - with your light colored futon cover, as I mentioned in my first post. A busy, colorful rug will definitely make the room appear smaller. You are on the right track with bringing in the bold color in your throw pillows, and the orange is great. Same thing for bold prints and patterns - you can bring them in with throw pillows, or maybe a throw.

Just focusing on your TV wall, the TV is too low to the ground. Your TV stand is also a bit too small but I think you can work with it if it isn't in the budget to replace it. You can do one of 3 things to fix this.

Mount the TV on the wall above the stand. You'll need to buy a cable cover to hide the cords between the TV and the wall outlet, any DVD player etc.

Take the legs off the TV stand and mount it on the wall with L brackets. Especially if you'll be setting the TV on the stand, you'll need to be sure that they go into a stud.

Remove the legs from the TV stand and replace them with new legs. Hardware stores sell them. Ikea does too. You just screw them into the bottom of the stand.

Then the space above the TV will look normal.

Add a piece of wall art to the left of the TV. The center of the art should be 5 feet above the floor.

If stools at the kitchen counter work for your lifestyle, they may work better in the space than adding a dining area with a table and chairs.

Well, we're all entitled to our opinions. BOLD is not the same as "busy." Neither is COLORFUL. It can be solid and full or rich in color. Jeez, I wasn't recommending "busy" anything. I simply showed an example of what is possible for readymade futon covers, since the current one is rather bland. One could also select fabric and have a cover made, or make it oneself. I disagree that any bold pattern or bold color would make the room look smaller - it would, of course, depend on the color and pattern chosen.

I made suggestions, not pronouncements. And the OP Liked my post, so...

thriftyboho, hear, hear! Our replies are addressing the OP, only.

I do not know why one feels it is their duty to save the OP from others’ suggestions.

And, when does a “busy print” make a room look smaller? Au contraire. Architectural Digest supports: "“Small spaces give way to bold color and pattern, and we love them for this reason,”

Yeah, kind of unbelievable that someone would just want to shoot down others' opinions -- but not surprising from Freedomplace1. They seem to have big issues with my comments. Last month, they told me to shut up in another thread, and also told the OP in that thread (in a very bossy manner) that all the recommendations they'd gotten were bad and to put back everything in the room the way it was before. The comment telling me to shut up was deleted after other posters said to stop with the negativity. So I take all feedback from that one with a grain of salt, but only responded in order to clarify my recommendations for the OP here.

    This is awesome guys!

@partim I love the idea to replace the legs for TV stands. I will try that, if not I’ll mount TV on the wall.

This is my room layout with measurements:

I’m going to get a couple of counter chairs and a 8x10 rug. I have outlined the rug size on the layout. Is this good size?

Regarding color, what do you think about these:

To use what you have for now, move the circular rug further under the futon. so that the front 2 legs are sitting on the futon. Leave a "pathway" of about 3 feet uncarpeted in front of the TV.

Move your chair so that it has both its front legs on the rug if you can. Try the chair angled towards the TV or you may prefer directly facing the kitchen so the light shines over your shoulder - it will be nice for reading. Right now it's too munch in the corner. A small footstool in front of it will make it more comfortable. You'll have to move things around a bit to see what looks best.

Move your small table centered on the space between the futon and the window wall, and hang your art piece directly over it with the center of the art about 5 feet from the floor. (I show it in orange below. )Or let us have a look at it and we'll help you hang it at the right height. A good size green plant on the table would be very MCM, and/or maybe a big floor plant on the other side too. Pothos is an easy plant.

Add a smaller piece of art over the futon, tall and narrow. (I show it in green below)

Art needs to be centered over the large pieces of furniture, not centered in a space or on a wall. It makes an arrangement with the furniture below it.

I really like the first rug you show but I think you should get your furniture where is best situated, before you measure for a rug.

    Hi Dmitri-

While I like the wood of the honeycomb shelves, and their shape is nice, the problem with them is that one has a tendency to actually put things on the shelves, and that makes your space look cluttered.

    A big no-no.

If you wanted the honey comb shelves for their shape alone and promised us you wouldn't put things inside it, then okay.

    Otherwise, NO.

There are some very talented folks here, why not invite them into this thread ?

Dmitri, what is the length of your futon?

@thriftyboho It is 78 inches long.

@partim The round rug is small. If I put both futon legs on it nothing else can be on it.

How wide is the round rug? Hard to tell from a photo. Maybe just put the table on the wall and the chair closer to the rug, so we can get an idea how that arrangement will look with a larger rug. And pull the rug as far under the sofa as it will go.

If I move the rug under the futon, it will look like this:

Not a pro. Really nice place and an uncluttered and uncomplicated, lightweight smooth/plain look -- MCM or Amish or Shaker-- is a good look for relatively small spaces.. The size of the furnishings you have fit the size of the space well; and if comfortable, wouldn't be in any rush to change any them.

Really like the round rug. A larger rug with a pattern and/or lots of colors could seriously visually shrink the space.

If you can find a couple of small round throw pillows in colors you like, consider using them in lieu of the square one. Do the rectangle pillows, individually or together, actually work as an arm rest; if not, you might consider a pair of bolsters.

    https://harrispillow.com/products/12-x-24-bolster-pillow

Really like the look of your chair -- especially the uncomplicated frame. If it is comfortable, definitely keep it and consider adding an ottoman (solid color fabric) to go with it. Pay attention to the height of the ottoman that would be comfortable with it before going shopping for one -- the top of it will need to be lower than the seat of the chair. I like the MCM saddle stool look. https://www.target.com/p/vera-mid-century-modern-fabric-upholstered-ottoman-light-gray-walnut-brown-baxton-studio/-/A-52353177?ref=tgt_adv_XS000000&AFID=google_pla_df&fndsrc=tgtao&DFA=71700000012577538&CPNG=PLA_Furniture%2BShopping&adgroup=SC_Furniture&LID=700000001170770pgs&LNM=PRODUCT_GROUP&network=g&device=c&location=9011011&targetid=pla-363342675083&ds_rl=1246978&ds_rl=1247068&ds_rl=1248099&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIherg3vKm7QIVAeiGCh1pbAwSEAQYASABEgKz_fD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

The look of the little table works with the space. A pair of comfortable wood chairs with separate cushions you can change out is all you really need unless you're spending a lot of time sitting in them -- on the computer or visiting with a friend ... then you might want chairs with more upholstery and more cushion comfort.

If you're choosing the plain wood chairs, make sure the wood back is made of the wider flat boards that are curved ( rather than vertical round dowels ). Have had both and the flat curved boards will be a lot more comfortable. I like the high back for extended sitting and these kinds of seats are comfortable and easily covered when need to be changed. You need to scroll over the page left of the wording to get the chairs to appear with this link:

    https://www.amishoriginals.com/shop/shaker-ladder-11320/

Or you might consider a pair of saddle stools for the table and bar. Do sit in whatever you are considering buying.

Like your art and the splash of bright colors. A large framed vertical poster on the wall (no wider than your bar/countertop) would work left of the tv across from the bar/countertop if you have a special interest you want represented in the room -- some place or pastime or hobby or team you support.

Like the idea of the "window": https://www.zazzle.com/fake_window_poster-228195308274074493?rf=238840279726397180&tc=EAIaIQobChMI6uzEn_mm7QIVgrKGCh0u0gGnEAQYBSABEgJ2aPD_BwE&utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=us_shopping&utm_term=z228195308274074493&ca_chid=2001810&ca_source=gaw&ca_ace=&ca_nw=g&ca_dev=c&ca_pl=&ca_pos=&ca_cid=303811431291&ca_agid=59506835414&ca_caid=1600127652&ca_adid=303811431291&ca_kwt=&ca_mt=&ca_fid=&ca_tid=aud-540000688047:pla-940848662132&ca_lp=9011011&ca_li=&ca_devm=&ca_plt=&gclsrc=aw.ds&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI6uzEn_mm7QIVgrKGCh0u0gGnEAQYBSABEgJ2aPD_BwE
