Looks good. Pull the carpet, sand and apply 2 coats of poly, then install new carpet.

Keep the handrails please. Once you tear those out, you've got to make the handrail continuously grip-able. Expensive.

yes, there is no wood under the carpet :( We decided on this.

From your photo it's not clear if you have a wall rail installed at the closed tread portion of the stairs. If not, I'd recommend you install one--ideally continuous with one of the existing handrails.

The end of the wall rail is visible,it's just not continuous.
