Need help picking out rug for Black/White Boho living room

last modified: 4 years ago

So, I'm starting from scratch with my new living room. So far I picked out a coffeetable and beige sofa. I'm having the hardest time picking out a rug. I know I want a black/white/ivory/gray/beige/maybe bronzes boho look that's cozy, comfortable and maybe a little tiny bit eclectic too. I am thinking about getting ivory or white curtains. Here is what I picked out, and examples of the look that I want to go for. Because the coffeetable looks "busy" I'm not sure what rug will go well with it. I think I want a dark rug, black/white or beige. I'm okay with gray or dark brown in it. I want the rug to kind of blend in, not be too cliche looking. Any suggestions on the rugs I picked out or what I should do?

Here is what I picked out:

Coffee Table

This Beige Sofa:

Rugs I like:

(This is not dark but it looks very cozy)

Here are examples of the kind of style I like:

(This one below: I like the color scheme but not necessarily the big patterns on the rug)

I like the dark rug contrast with beige sofa and red pillow

I prefer that last one. Agree the contrast will work nicely with the light furniture. And I prefer a distinct pattern vs. one that's more "muddy".

I'd add some color elsewhere. Maybe some similar Moroccan style throw pillows.

Another vote for that last one. I really like it — it has a more classic and sophisticated look than the others.

Yea, I definitely want to avoid a muddy look. Oh! Which last one do you guys mean? The white shag diamond one with orange/colored diamonds?

    I meant this one:

I've been eyeing that one too! Except I've been trying to ID it and find the exact one from that picture. Hopefully I can find it. It does look more sophisticated than the others.

Thank you @Jilly. I really like that rug. I just hope I can find a way the space my own because it feels like I'm picking out things exactly that are in that last picture, the rug, that same coffee table, beige sofa etc.

I totally understand! I thought it was one of the choices you were asking about. I think any of your choices would look good! But I do love that one — and with your own art, lamps, accessories, etc, it’ll look like your own design.

I’m helping my daughter with her first apartment, and it’s fun but overwhelming. So many options. She also ordered a beige sofa we’re working around. It’s a 1940’s apt with original features, so we’re doing a sort of boho-Regency-MCM-Mod mix. :)

How exciting helping with her first apartment! The 1940's Boho looks sounds so cute. I'm going for a boho look too, although it's fun, it's pretty overwhelming indeed. Yes soo many options and figuring out how to make it quirky enough that it's truly unique but without too much mismatching.

Yeah, that rug stands out to me soo much too. I just love everything in that picture. I feel like that look is scandinavian-boho which I love. Originally, I found that coffeetable and that was the picture displaying it so I aimed to get that, but then I realized how much I like the rug too and the beige sofa contrasting with the rug. But yeah, if I do get that rug too, I can hopefully have enough art, lamps etc to still make it my own. Hopefully I won't feel like I copied too much, which I'm slightly worried about haha.

I think it’s confusing if you aren’t sure if you want a neutral geometric rug or a color/style that will dictate a very specific look. First thing is to decide how you want room to feel and a color combination and then the rug decision will be much easier.

I like the look of the 2nd to last picture you posted. I want the room to feel airy/cozy, comfortable and warm. That's part of why I am choosing a beige/gray/white/black color scheme. But deciding which pattern for the rug to go with that has confused me. I know that the larger geometric patterns would be too loud. I really like that last darker rug I talked about it, and I was told don't focus too much about matching but focus on what you LOVE and it would come together. But I find myself questioning, will that selection and coffeetable give that warm, cozy vibe.

The cozy vibe will come with your accessory choices - a throw, cushions, art and plants. The table really pops on the dark rug and it’s a bit different as well.

Yeah I'm hoping even with the patterned table and dark rug, that I can still make it cozy. So it's possible? It's just that coffee table goes so well with the dark rug. I was thinking maybe I could get airy curtains and art that makes it look cozy. Maybe lighter white or gray airy curtains. Right, maybe I can play around with plants and throws too to give that vibe too.

Half the fun is bringing things home and testing them out and it all evolves somehow! Enjoy the journey as well as the destination 🙂

Thanks! I will try these out and see how they look and go from there.

Not sure if I should get a matching end table with the coffee table or just try a different kind of end table. I was hoping I can just settle with one end table.

    Matching one looks like this:

Boho is all about creating an eclectic feel, non-matching with a creative mix of textures, style and color. I‘d suggest a black side table and ones below were found on Pinterest “boho black side tables” in case you want to look further. Also be sure to address your couch the same - mix and match layering.

I second the suggestion of a black or dark brown side table.

@Maureen, yeah I agree now, I think for a boho look, it's better to mismatch and combine different styles and I can go with the darker end table. That's a good idea because it will go with the rug and that way the rug won't be the only item that is dark. I like the style of the 2nd end table, maybe I can look for something like that.

@Yayagal, that's a cool looking living room. Gives me a better idea of "boho."

Just browsing for art. I think I might look more on Etsy and maybe look some more at thrift places once I get all the main pieces. But maybe something like this. Although, I think I might like something more delicate looking or maybe I can do plates instead.

I'd like something like this for the art behind a sofa. Although the price is way too high. Going to probably check Etsy afterall.

Have you ordered your sofa, coffee table, and rug yet?

    Yes

Cool! That's exciting! When do you expect everything to arrive? You know we're all going to want pictures of them in your space! :)

Thanks! I will update with pictures for sure! I really hope they all arrive within the next week or two. It will be fun to set it all up that's for sure.

Hold off on art until you have set up the room re: choices, placement, mixing, etc....and keep in mind how much it can influence the feel of a room

When I want a high-quality low-cost rug I always search Etsy. I would search "Morrocan rugs" and see if there's anything you love. They are generally hand-made and natural fibers.

I agree with the others the dark rug pictured with your coffee table is pretty, but won’t that show every piece of lint and dirt?

I am also loving the darker rug because it looking much prettier with your coffee table. I agree with @Maureen to hold off on art, let's arrive all your things at home and then decide on other decors.

@Maureen, yeah I'd been thinking to wait until the furniture gets here before I actually buy the art so that I can get a better feel for how everything looks, the lighting etc. Just been browsing for now. I like the feel of the 2nd and last photo. So I guess ill just keep my eye out for similar styles, and see what works best in the living room.

Looks like the rug is coming in soon. I'm getting a little worried if I ordered a size that's too big. The size I chose was 7'9" by 11'2. That beige sofa posted above that I got is 83" and I don't really plan to get chairs for a while so it will just be the sofa. I wonder if the sofa is too small for that sized rug. But if I went with a smaller size, I'm worried it would be too small.

    They had these rug sizes:

    5'3" by 7'6"

    6'7" by 9'6"

    7'9" by 11'2" (I chose this size).

    8'10" by 12'9"

    last modified: 4 years ago

You could mark the dimensions of the pieces you bought with painter's tape on your floor and see. Did you buy it from someplace that allows returns and makes it easy to exchange? The 83" couch is just one inch shy of 7 feet, so I don't think it'll be a problem, although I probably would've gone for the 8'10" by 12'9" size since the rug is really one of your starting points. Of course, there are probably some folks here with a chart or guideline to share, but in a Boho room, you can break rules. And remember, you will have side tables and other stuff in the room eventually. It's only natural that the room will feel like something is not enough, too much, or "off" until it is filled completely.

The rug size is fine. You are better off with a larger rug, as it will make room also appear larger.

You guys are right, the size I chose for the rug should be fine. I didn't want too big because I love the wood flooring and so I didn't want it to be completely covered but I was worried about it being too small too but it seems like it's likely large enough and yes, the sofa is about 7 feet so it should be fine. I think I need to accept that it's okay if everything doesn't look just right just like your point @thriftyboho, about how I don't need to necessarily follow guidelines with a Boho look. Thanks for the link @freedomplace1, it looks like it's large enough to make the room look bigger. I will see once it gets here and yes I can always return it! I sure hope it does not come to that.

So it's this sofa I'm getting:

And getting this rug and coffee table in this picture:

So the sofa, rug and table are here! I just have to put the table and sofa together this weekend.

I chose art that I decided on and a few throws that I'm choosing between. I'm starting to look at curtains since my goal is to get everything ready be New Years (hopefully!) But I'm really stuck on what kind of curtains to get. With these art and throw choices, I guess the room is more....eclectic. I'm not sure whether to get solid curtains or patterned ones since the rug is pretty patterned already.

Here is the art/throws I picked out.

I will have these two art side by side behind the sofa.

I'm still deciding whether to get 15x21 or 20x26 for the art. I guess I'll have a better idea once the sofa/table is set up.

For the throws, I'm getting two of the beige ones for the back pieces and the black/white floral and red one for the 2 front pieces.

Now for the curtains.....it's the hardest to really decide. I don't even know where to start!

Sofa and coffee table below (still waiting to drill in the legs for sofa). I'm hoping the coffee table is not too small or that it's okay for a "boho" look anyway.

should be fine once the legs are on it.

I have some wood panels that match that table. was going to do a paint treatment w/them.

    they're this size

but resemble something like this design.

sort of remind of your table.

I think Wayfair has them. have you seen them?

oh wow those are nice, I like the intricate details of the last one. I haven't seen them but wayfair has nice stuff. Is the square one a mandala?

The rug looks too dark, and big. Art work doesn't look right. throws are too matchey with the art. Everything looks wrong! Don't know where to start....it doesn't look right.

I like the sofa, rug and table. I feel like there are better options for the throw pillows ... I would start with something that brings the color of the rug up to the sofa. That may help the rug feel more connected to the space. The throw pillows you have now match the art too much and don’t really evoke the boho vibe IMO. I’m meh on the art, but I know that’s a very personal thing so I’m hesitant to mention it. if you love it I think there are better ways to connect the pieces to the space than the throw pillows you have now.

Once you start to bring in end tables, decorative accessories and a perhaps a few house plants I think it will come together nicely.

Yeah, I was thinking to just get a smaller size of that rug so it's not too overwhelming and I'm hesitant to return the art for some reason even though I agree I'm not sure it is too connected to the space. Just like you said, the throws match the art too much.

Do you think if I get two throws from these, the art and rug will look more connected and make more sense in the space? I just wonder how fixable is this without returning too many things except the throws.

This is the closer look of the art:

I was going for a look like this for the room:

    last modified: 4 years ago

Of course it looks odd now, because the couch doesn't have its legs on and isn't sitting on the rug. With only a few pieces of furniture at this point, you just need to be patient. It will start coming together.

I also like the rug, but I imagined a longer couch. Still, the three pieces work well together. The pillows you've chosen so far have to go. And they look too small. I would look for 20" square pillows to start. I like the top and bottom pillows from the image you just posted, that is more the look you need.

With the couch with legs on the rug, better pillows, some plants, and additional furniture, it will look rather nice. As for the artwork, as I've said before - unless you find something absolutely fabulous that you must have, wait until more of the room is finished before buying any art. Get everything else in place first.

    Keep going, you're doing fine!
