Trim color HELP

Hi all- Am debating whether or not to paint the walls and trim in my main living areas, liv room, dining, kitchen, hall, and downstairs den. It is a 1960s split level. Sadly after much, too much time and effort trying to find a single color to use throughout my space and not being successful, had a color specialist from SW come out for a consultation. She advised two colors SW North Star for liv room/ hall and SW drift of mist for remainder. I like the look of same color with different sheens, but the SW North star, a bluish gray might be too cold since it has a fair amount of blue in it. So, I'm wondering if SW extra white would better?

Thanks!

Yes, I think that would look very lovely and cohesive. A soft, warm look!

Should I not worry about the white of the windows?

    Thank you you are awesome!!!!

I wouldn’t match my trim to those. I don’t think it will be that obvious after everything is done. You would need to go with a bright , blue white to match those and I don’t think you want that for all your trim!

The wheels of progress turn slooooowly. But want to pass these photos along to show the progress. BM Pale oak walls. Working on window treatments and other finishing. Not sure about the lighting.

Wow! Beautiful! Great choice on that backsplash! Love the Pale Oak on walls. Perfect! I think I would change dining room fixture. Just not quite right. I will look around. Nice job and your crews did a fabulous job!!

Here are some further ideas for dining area. Rather than print window treatments, I put woven shade to repeat natural rug feeling. I brought the blue in with a blue lacquered tray for the table. I would remove table cloth and get neutral hard backed placemats. They protect table and are easy to clean off. Add a green plant to tray with white and gold accessories. Do a different chandelier to bring looks of space to this area.

A transitional chandelier that speaks to both style of furniture and other nearby elements but not matchy matchy.

    Something like these.

Flo Mangan- Thanks. The rug is not staying because the chairs do not move freely on it and the loose weave is pulling apart in areas already. I like those wooden shades a lot. Could you share where I can get them? I'm not in love with the print either. This print, a new table, rug and chairs were recommended by a local designer. I'm not thrilled but need to finish since this has dragged on far too long I would very much like to just add the blue in a small way such as the tray you show.

Thanks to both of you for helping me move forward with paint color, I was frozen from decision since I'm not confident with the direction of the project. I like some aspects, but the blue color bugs me. So, when it comes to color I don't trust myself....

The blue looks GORGEOUS! NO DOUBTS. I'll post the details of those items. The woven shades you can get from Lowes for a good price.

Flo Mangan- I think you are exactly right on the issue with the light over the table, it should be more open like a chandelier.

Yes. You could put slider pads on the chair legs and don’t use a rug. It is a fairly small space so chairs back legs will probably always catch edge of rug. It’s too bad you didn’t get a round table for this area. But it is what it is.

Hmmm.... Am replacing the table actually. Could still get a round. I tought a round would be good too, but the local designer said "no". Now, even more unsure if i should take her advice.

I am in love with your kitchen. What is the name of your countertops? I love the look and your whole design is stunning.

I like the fixture you have ; it looks good in your space and the more modern vibe of your kitchen! It doesn’t go with your dining set however . Since you are getting a new table you might consider new chairs also. I wouldn’t mind Roman shades in a print; the one you show just isn’t quite right color wise.

Shari G- Thank you very much. The counters are a quarzite called white macaubus. They are very hardy.

With measurements, I can do scale layouts and give you best size and shape for table and chairs. 😊

Blues can be difficult to match an since you have two( which look great btw) you need to search for just the right combo! I agree with your designer that a round table probably wouldn’t work in this space but it’s hard to tell from a few pics! I put one here just for fun though.

I think I prefer a pair of art with blues on walls on sides of windows rather than fabric but it’s personal choice.

Flo Mangan- Thank You!!! Day in and day out just two of us, my youngest son and I, eating at the table. The table and chairs you see are from my former, larger home which I brought along hoping it woud work, but seems its too big. The space for the most part is 143 1/2 " x 136", except where the hutch eats into it a bit. Sketch below, roughly to scale.

Ok. Let me play with it and see what I can come up with.

Here is Option 1. I put a 42” round table with chairs in X position. That used save best. If you wish you could get an 8’ round rug in the room or something over 7’ so you have chair push back. Do a pedestal table so you can bring in 2 more chairs if you want to seat 6.

Had to reload Houzz! I don’t know why your designer recommended to not do round table. Maybe you wanted initially to seat more? Anyway, the space is perfect for a round table. I think you could also do a banquette and oval table to make space feel more open. That’s next.

  • PRO

Option 2. A bench/banquette type seat with oval table. This frees up more space and you can seat 6 ultimately.

You could do similar set up with round pedestal table and 4 chairs. Tulip tables come in rounds and ovals.

Thanks lynartist. You are right about the two blues making find a fabric a challenge. Also gets compounded by trying to find a print that's not too large or too small for a roman shade. The ikat print is a contender, though wondering if a print fabric would be more limiting than artwork as time goes by. Might be over thinking it. Why are you thinking round might not work? Do you think aesthetically if would be off?

Thanks Flo- Like the idea/ looks of round best. Seating for the holidays concerns me though. Hoping to accomodate 16 adults this year for Christmas dinner but am at a loss on how to manage that. This will be my only table. Not sure why designer believes rectangle is best, but maybe the ability to provide more seating is the reason.

    Pretty mood board, thanks

I was looking at the photos but now that you provided the measurements I don’t see why you can’t do a round if you wanted one. Your photo foreshortened the space to make it look more elongated. 16 people may be a challenge but if you could find a table that opens with a leaf to make an oval it may be doable. I don’t have a problem using prints with art. Use a nice size white matting on your art to separate the patterns. It’s a personal choice of course, there are lots of beautiful fabrics and there are textures , stripes or smaller prints to consider too.

Entertaining 16 people means a buffet not a sit down meal. Even with an extension table, that’s not happening in your space. Get some stackable patio chairs to add to seats you have and let folks graze and mingle or sit fir a minute to eat. Make food “finger food” or comparable type bites and serve an interesting drink for the occasion with or without spirits and call it a day. No need spending tons of money on a table and chairs few will sit on once a year.

Thanks ladies. Have always hosted sit down holiday dinners, but makes a lot of sense to change to buffet style when the number get large. 😊
