Am I overreacting? Broken tub spout replaced with cheaper model

I’m going to apologize in advance because I have no idea the technical names of pretty much everything I’m going to be discussing so if you need clarification please let me know.

I recently purchased a Delta shower/tub kit from Home Depot. When I got it home I did notice the knob for the diverter was loose in the box but assumed it screwed on the them stem. Anyways, I installed everything else then realized the piece was actually broken not just loose. I contacted Delta and they sent out a replacement. I received the replacement today and am pretty irritated by the fact that they sent me a builder grade tub spout that does not even match the style of the set I bought except for the finish color. I know nobody else would care, but I have to look at it every day. I just feel like if I wanted the Delta Foundations series, I would have bought that and paid $80 less than what I did for the set I purchased which is the Porter series. That particular series has been discontinued (because apparently this was a common issue) so I understand they can’t send me the exact some spout and nor would I want them to if it’s going to break again. But to send me the absolute cheapest product they sell to replace it when there are several other series which are way more aesthetically compatible to the “premium” set I got just seems really shady.

So should I contact them again and let them know that I am displeased with what they consider a suitable replacement? Or just let it go and be glad I can shower in my own bathroom again? I really don’t want to have to wait for yet another one to come bc it took three weeks for the first replacement to arrive.

I’m just feeling really cheated. I wanted to do something nice for myself bc I typically never do. I paid for the nice set of fixtures and did all the work myself and feel like I shouldn’t have to live with this cheap looking replacement. I also shouldn’t have go spend more money I don’t have buying a tub spout that matches the style of the one I bought originally.

The original spout is the one with a diverter (obviously lol). I don’t think the replacement is horrible on its own but it definitely is a totally different style and proportionally way smaller than the original.

Return the original to Home Depot and buy something else.

I would have done that but the valve is already soldered into plumbing

Have you looked at the Delta website for a different tub spout that you would be happy with? It doesn’t appear they have many tub spouts in that finish. I see the Foundations and the Windmere.

    Yes!

@vinmarks I have looked and noticed that there is “Venetian bronze” and “oil rubbed bronze” as two of the options. To my untrained eye they don’t seem to be noticeably different. The styles in the Venetian color collection seem to match the style I had originally purchased. But I can see why a representative for the company cannot send that out as a replacement bc in their minds I’m sure the colors are different as black and white. In person there could in fact be a noticeable difference. I will either purchase the same set as originally and just return the tub spout with that or find another set I like. I just wish I had known I was going to have to replace the valve in the first place I probably would have opted for a different brand. I stuck with delta bc that’s what was on there previously but I would have had to retrofit and order another new valve (instead of using the one in the kit) which would have been an additional $80. Thank you for taking the time to look into the information you did for me. Have a good day!

I would contact whoever sent you the one you don't like and tell them they sent the wrong one and you would like the right one (tell them which one you want) sent out immediately because it is what you paid for and it is now holding up your project. Don't make it more complicated than it is.

I guess you have two options, Contact Delta again and ask for a tub spout that is acceptable or buy a new set and swap what you need to swap out and return. In all likelihood the original set you bought was a return and they never checked to see that all the pieces were in working order. This has happened to me before. Such a hassle. Good luck.

Return what you purchased to Home Cheapo and go to a real plumbing supply house. There is a difference!

I purchases two faucets, identical model numbers and finish. The one from the big box store weighed half what the one from the plumbing supply house did - one was plastic, one was metal. Lesson learned.

I would contact Delta and have them send a replacement that is aesthetically acceptable.

Also take a look at the Brizo line because that is Delta's higher cost sister brand.

What they have sent you would not be acceptable to me. Tell them which option replacement would be acceptable to you.

In the future, don't buy this kind of stuff from HD

@Raye Smith what was the price difference like of the two models? I would expect the one from the supply house would be more but if so is it reasonable?

@Helen thanks for the tip I will take a look. Do you happen to know if they work with the delta universal valve? Although I am almost considering removing the newly installed valve and get a totally different brand. I was going to just avoid the hassle of it and use the one they sent but they didn’t even include the stub out adapter and the one I had for the previous faucet was incompatible. It’s just a bloodletting for my bank account is how I feel.

The plumbing house gave me a discount for the sizable order. The plumbing house was more expensive but well worth getting the real thing and not plastic. The faucet was a Price Pfister.

You should contact Delta or Brizo to check compatibility.

I commiserate with dealing with all of the unexpected costs of remodeling. Obviously cost is a factor but - at least for me - it would drive me crazy to have to look at such a glaring aesthetic blot - it would just annoy me every day as long as I lived in the place.

Sometimes you have to compromise because if you don't the cost is completely unreasonable. My shower was originally designed to have the kind of drain that was tiled so it was very unobtrusive. Somehow they screwed up installation of the drain and so that kind of drain cover wasn't possible without tearing out the whole shower - so I compromised and got a beautiful drain from Designer Drains - and I am fine with it when I sit in my shower.

On the other hand, somehow the HVAC people moved my thermostat to a living room wall instead of a more unobtrusive place in the hallway and I insisted that it be moved. When I sit in my living room and look at the beautiful arrangement of furniture and art on that wall, I am so glad that I didn't have to look at a thermostat instead :-).

My Kohler spout diverter can be disassembled; after all, it had to have some way to be assembled in the factory! Try taking the diverter out of the replacement spout and installing it in the broken spout.

If you can find the parts number, you might try Ebay. That's how I got a tub spout for a Moen package I had that was out of production.

To answer your question: Yes, you are overreacting.
