24" cooktop over a 24" oven in a 24" Ikea base cabinet?

Hello folks,

I'm designing a small IKEA kitchen with a small budget, and I'm pretty set on the 24" Convection Oven and the 24" Gas Cooktop from Bertazzoni (models below). I've checked out the installation guide and the cooktop can be installed over the oven (screenshot below as well).

I know that IKEA offers a 30" base cabinet for built-in ovens, but I'd like to save some cabinet space by using a 24" cabinet instead. Unfortunately, IKEA doesn't offer a 24" base cabinet specific for ovens. So instead, I'm considering using their plain 24" base cabinet to fit both my oven and cooktop: https://www.ikea.com/us/en/p/sektion-base-cabinet-for-sink-white-ringhult-white-s69376864/

Am I making a wise decision here? Will this provide enough room for proper ventilation? Curious if I'm overlooking any safety or design hazards by trying to save some cabinet space. Any advice/warning would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

Building an IKEA kitchen is difficult enough without trying to "customize" an IKEA cabinet or wrestle an 84 lb oven. Just get the Bertazzoni PROF244GASXE range plus toe kick instead.

I'd also recommend a 30" range which are plentiful and have more room (note that Bertazzoni does not disclose the interior oven dimensions in its spec sheets). To get back the additional 6 inches, consider reducing another base cabinet, the sink cabinet, or even getting an 18" dishwasher.

I replaced an old 24" free standing range with a new one when I redid my kitchen and I'm incredibly sorry that I did. The new 24" range has thicker walls (more insulation) for the oven, and so there is almost no room inside. I can JUST fit a typical baking sheet, but there is no room for the air in the oven to circulate, so things don't cook. The opening isn't high enough to roast a chicken unless I remove the bottom shelf entirely, in which case it burns the bottom of the pan and the chicken. If you can possibly fit a 30" range, do so. If you're determined to go with 24", make sure there is room enough inside the oven to cook properly.

I’ve done plenty of Airbnb kitchenettes with a 12” 2 burner cooktop under a 30” convection OTR and 24” fridge. Evaluate the type of cooking that needs to happen regularly here. Not 1-2 times a year. Your everyday meal prep and cooking. Start there. Draw out a measured diagram. And try to use standard sized appliances where you can, for the price and service break.

Who is going to use this kitchen? You, or is this a rental unit? A 24" oven is pretty darn small, IMO. If you do any cooking at all, you wouldn't even be able to get a cookie sheet into an oven that size.

I think a 27" oven is as small as you should go, and my preference is always 30" for the main oven. A 24" convection oven can be in addition to, but not in place of, a standard oven.

    My two cents.

Thanks for all the comments! To clarify, it’s a tiny kitchen in a new york city apartment, hence the 24” oven, cooktop, and cabinet.

Anyone see any problem with venting or clearance neeeded between the oven and cooktop?

It can be done. I just do not recall which Akurum cabinet I used. Here's a pic of a NY studio apartment kitchen that we renovated a few years ago. A professional IKEA kitchen installer will be able to help. For a cooktop, we got the Verona 24" cooktop that fit exactly in that cabinet. It was great!!!

    Thank you @maddiep67!!

May i ask which oven you used? You got a 24” verona cooktop and a 24” oven in a 24” Akurum caninet, right?

I was trying to remember since it's been a few years and we sold the studio. However, IIRC, it was a Fagor, prior to them redesigning that oven. Now Fagor isn't getting good reviews. In your search, please be sure that the oven specs indicate that it can installed under cabinet & under a gas cooktop. For us, the gas power burner was by far more important than the oven. However, the oven worked really well as well. That kitchen packed a punch.

@maddiep67 that’s great! So you had a 24 inch Fagor oven in a 24 inch Akurum cabinet?

That is correct. 24" Fagor electric oven with the 24" Verona gas cook top. The Berts that you posted look very, very nice.

Are you having someone do the install?

IKEA Akrum kitchen cabinets were discontinued. The current IKEA cabinet system is Sektion whose cabinets are designed and installed differently. For example, Sektion base cabinets are attached to a rail; Akrum base cabinets weren't.

Traemand (ikea’s installation vendor) gave a quote that’s hard to beat so i’m thinking about using them to do the dry fitting, and then bringing a plumber to do the gas/water/electricity connection for the appliances and sink/faucet. Any advice on installation for ikea kitchens in the nyc area?

    Hey @MJ,

Another member, who lives in Jackson Heights, did a fantastic ikea kitchen in her apartment using a contractor she found via Sweeten. Here’s the link to her blog where you’ll also find the link to the contractor: Renovation Diary: Our kitchen was featured on Sweeten!

@wdccruise, that is correct. Akurum was discontinued and we now have Sektion. That is why I made the call-out.

@MJ, I don't have any recommendations for installers. I know I had considered the kitchen couple and also Traemand's, but in the end, I ended up using Apart & Together, but he has since moved to a different state and has retired. I would reach out to Traemand's with the question if you are thinking of using them. Or if you plan on using a different installer, please ask them. They can review your kitchen (sometimes for a fee) in order to make sure that everything that is needed will be ordered.

This discussion makes it clear why it's much wiser to install a range rather than a cooktop and oven. It will require special skills of the installer to modify a cabinet to support the oven. Plus you must have the countertop cut to accommodate the cooktop. Should the cooktop ever fail, its replacement may not fit in the old cutout. A range -- appliancesconnection.com alone has 72 stainless steel gas ranges for sale -- can be simply slid into a 24" opening that any IKEA kitchen installer can create.

Instead of a gas cooktop you can consider induction. Miele offers 24"/60cm. Full surface soon to be available You could pair that with a Miele CSO.

@maddiep67 oh wow, didn’t know about “kitchen couple”. Will look into them. Thanks!

@MJ how did it end up for you?
NYC small kitchen situation here too, found your thread and am considering the same exact setup.
