Taupe Trim Dilemma...

Moved into our new home and we absolutely loved the funky backsplash, blue doors and taupe trim when we purchased. I am finding it really difficult to try to purchase furniture now that we are living here. The blue doors are really limiting us so we are committed to having them painted either the taupe trim color or the color of the walls. With that said, where should I start. are there any color pallettes that i should really stick too with the taupe color trim? it has quite a bit of purpley gray in it. where do i go from here?

Master Bedroom- carpet has quick a bit of purple to it as well.

IMO paint the trim It limits every decision you make for every element and IMO not attractive at all and the blue doors are the same .

I think it’s a wonderful trim color and refreshingly different. I know it’s hard to envision decor in these blank spaces, but it really could be a great backdrop for just about any aesthetic. It’s going to look very different with decor around it.

I had dark taupe trim with creamy white walls in my last house and absolutely loved it. My decor is traditional with warm earthy tones and when we bought the house, I worried nothing would work. But it did and I’m glad I didn’t paint over it all.

I‘m personally not a fan of the blue doors and agree with you about painting them.

Look around at other homes with taupe trim for ideas.

The dining room and kitchen here:

These aren’t the exact color as yours, but hopefully will give a bit of an idea on unique tones as trim:

Anyway, do some searches for ideas. These are more cool-toned examples, but warmer tones look just as good (what I had).

Congratulations on your new home. :)

    Another vote from me too.

People don’t bat an eye when they see ‘taupe’ walls with white trim, because they are familiar with that arrangement.

If you actively don’t like the colour then there’s little point in creating a palette around it. But that’s not the same as liking it but just feeling at a loss how to proceed.

And admittedly the more neutral your trim, the greater number of options you have for selecting wall colours down the line. But if you do like it, then there a number of ways you can go. (Nice examples above)

It appears to be a greyed colour from the end of the Yellow-Red or beginning of the Yellow Hue Family. Possibly something a little like BM Castlegate. The flooring is from the same region, so they Are related

Colours like this, from this Hue Family neighbourhood, are inclined to flash purpleish in certain imbalanced lighting.

I have to say I really like the complementary blue too!

You may not like these, but just to show how you can play with building in, various textures, lights/darks, near-neutrals/more saturated colours, but from a limited number of Hue Families to add more interest to a space whilst still keeping it cohesive.

Don’t the yellow-greens just look zingy alongside?

I do really like the taupe trim, I also like the blue doors in theory but because every door is blue it is extremely limiting. so we expect to paint the doors the color of the walls. i am just more at a loss as too how to go forward with taupe. thanks for your help!

Your colours make me think of the palettes from Mediterranean villas & gîtes.

This is such a great example of an admirable trim variance from the norm but unfortunately with an undertone that makes decorating impossible. I try to explain this to clients but they don't always hear me. Ideal solution- paint trim a perfectly neutral light gray and start over.

So I have no idea how to map where my trim color is on the wheel, I am REALLY new at this... but this is the info on my trim... can someone help point when that is on this wheel?

I love it. Darker than Castlegate and in the Yellow-Red Hue Family. Now you have an objective starting point. Do you happen to know what the white or blue is?

    Yes. It is Worldly Grey

The power of knowing to which Hue Family a colour belongs is that it helps you create combinations with reason. These all belong to the same Hue Family. They are organically related.

If you fancied a monochrome palette it doesn’t mean you’d have to have all these suggestions as paint colours in the same space, but you could use the paint chips to help you choose furnishings, textiles, accessories etc. Also you don’t need to incorporate the same quantities of each colour either.

A cerulean blue would make a beautiful accent color.

its on every door in our home which is over 30 when counting closets and bathroom etc... My favorite color is Blue and so I saw this home and I loved it. The Blue doors we would love to keep, but I also am realizing it means that every single room has to coordinate with them. So I am leaning towards painting them either the wall color, Worldly Grey or painting them the trim color Folkstone. I've seen both and I think both look very cool, I just worry about it being very dark if I were to paint the doors the trim color as well, but I would use lighter furniture etc...

I love the Folkstone, it’s a gorgeous color. Much deeper than what I thought from the pictures. So glad you’re keeping it!

I think you have the makings of a lovely whole-house palette if you give yourself chance to play around a little with the possibilities and test a shortlist to see how they fair with your available light. (Using the paint chips as inspiration for textiles, furnishings etc)

To me it is disconnected. The windows have white casings but dark aprons. The dark crown looks simultaneously heavy yet skinny, the baseboard blends with the floor. Call me boring but I would paint all that trim white.

    I like it. Its diff.

here are some other colors you could try. For the pantry, I'd prob go to a architectural salvage and find a vintage door that fits.

would look nice w/the trim color, and your wood floors.

Or, you could try a darker color like pictured here

see how they look. for the front door, I shopped in Wrought Iron. but here are some other blues you may like.

lighter gray blues. that current blue is too baby-blue

some ideas for the room style

    oh, forgot counter stools.

Lamps Plus has this one in Dove that would prob go well w/the trim color It's on the right

Tapestry is the name. they also have it in this color

    wicker tapestry stool

    Loom barstool:

Love it w/the pendants too. You could do a woven light over the dining table if you like.

these chairs come in many finishes and colors. just search 'rattan' loom woven, wicker natural, counter stools. they're all over the place. with the salvage door, a nice wood dining table and all the other elements, you'd have a bomb room!
