I’m looking for something similar to cedar shakes as well. I agree with Flo regarding vinyl. The cement shakes from Hardie look promising but I’m looking for a variation in color like a new real cedar shake. If I find one I will post again.

CertainTeed Cedar Impressions Sawmill Shakes are made of injection molded polypropylene or polyethylene; Northwoods Shakes are made of PVC.

Beach House Shakes are made of injection molded polypropylene.

That Cedar Impression Blended gray looks very interesting and closer to weathered shakes. I prefer elements that are “authentic” to original so these appeal to that bias.

Update- i have the prices for the Cedar Impressions an its way beyond my budget.

I'm waiting on pricing and colour samples for a Novik Novikshake RS8 in 301 oak or 304 teak.

I should have added my location to my original post. The home will be located in Nova Scotia on the Ocean coastline (Northumberland Strait). It will face Northwest and have a mostly window front Chalet look.

One thing that makes vinyl look bad is the J-channel that is visible on most projects. With the use of rabbeted trim and other details, the J-channel can be eliminated or greatly reduced, and look more like natural wood.

Beach House Shake is absolutely not a vinyl product -- it is a composite shingle, with a polymer base. If you call a rep or customer service, they will tell you factually that it is not vinyl (pvc).
