I really don't know what i can do to this room .Can i make it look better with your help? ...
Comments (36)Really like all the natural light and that you have sheers. Your room has great potential. If you have a fixed panel with your patio door unit, consider adding a living plant (or maybe not with a toddler). Your drapes are hanging a bit oddly. If you keep these drapes, see if you can reset the hooks or get a different kind of hook so the tops of the drapes are more uniform. You have enough natural light to consider hooking the tops of the pairs of drapes together and investing in some tie backs for style. the fabric need not match the drapes -- just coordinate with your color of choice. The color of the drapes seems intended to coordinate with the wide tan armless seat. In the second pic, the corner looks cluttered. Unless those are toys needed in the room, see what in that pile you might move/store out of sight. Does your ottoman have storage -- that's always a plus, especially if the top is reversible with a solid firm side for using it as a coffee table as needed. Avoid adding clutter disguised as art. Art should represent your interest and be something you value and treasure -- not just something to fill the space on a wall or a place on a shelf. With a toddler, you really don't want to crowd the room with any more furniture than you need. Try moving what you have around a bit before investing in more pieces. Try centering the rug in the room away from all three walls and/or at least putting the sectional farther onto the rug -- the is to move the sectional a bit away from the windows. Alternately, split the difference: move the rug a bit farther toward the upper right corner and the sectional all the way onto the rug. A coffee table doesn't always "work" with a sectional -- which way do you turn it is the problem. It appears you have two armless/backless pieces to your sectional. Consider embracing using one as an ottoman and the other (smooth top) either as another ottoman or as seat separate from the sectional, perhaps with a light in between and a matching one on the other end of the sectional: either a narrow end table with a tall lamp (thin lamp post) or, alternately, a floor lamp with shelf/table top built in. I've been unable to find the one I saw last week that was a really heavy wooden pedestal table with a lamp post through the pedestal. Since you have a small child in the home, I'm surprised the shelf below the tv has breakables in it rather than toys and/or your small "hope" pillows for the little one to claim while lying on the floor to watch tv. On my screen, your wall color seems to be an off white w/yellow hue and white ceiling. If you might have wanted a less neutral color but need to accept what you have for now, consider an alternative for adding color. You can get rolls of narrow trim tape (about three or four inches wide) intended for the top of wall paper that can be added horizontally to the top of the wall above your drapes and all around the top of the wall in this room. While some designs are just geometric prints or strips, others have images that might reflect an interest or hobby. One of my neighbors chose a hunting and woods theme while another chose a beach -- using the strips on painted walls rather than walls with wall paper....See MoreHow to arrange furniture around fireplace and corner TV?
Comments (31)1) I'd mount the tv onto the wall where the outlet is, OR get a console table to put it on against the outlet wall. 2) I would position the two chairs in front of the window, in a somewhat kitty corner fashion, so that they each provide visitors a clear view of the tv. I'd put a round accent table between the two chairs. They would still allow light to come into the room, and wouldn't block the view of the outside. 3) Leave the sofa where it is because it takes advantage of the views of the fireplace, tv, window and visitors who will sit in the chairs. 4) I feel white is the wrong color choice for the rug, and that the rug is too big for the space. It looks like a big, white hole in the already small livingroom area. 5) I would put a colorful piece of artwork, or a big mirror with a colorful frame on the mantlepiece. 6) Since all the furniture is angular, I'd consider getting a round, leather coffee table/ottoman to break up the lines and create a softer flow to the space. It would make it more inviting. Then the ottoman should be closer to the sofa so it is accessible for beverages etc. Put some magazines, a throw blanket and a mirrored tray with pillar candles on it. It's unfortunate that the couch pretty much has to make the pass-through from the kitchen inaccessible, but putting it anywhere else in the room would create barriers to the various focal points....See MoreShould I stagger my cabinets around the corner kitchen sink?? Comments (29)kbartolu, here are the measurements you asked about. My windows are 20 inches wide, which is how wide the glass is. With the trim around the window, it's bigger, but I assume you want to measurement of the actual glass. The height is 43 inches, but with the transom, it's 57 inches. My island is 63 inches by 69 inches. I love iamjudy's comment about the cabinets going to the ceiling. I had an interior designer tell me that she would have designed my cabinets as going to the ceiling if she had designed it. So that's something to think about. I also love sunnydrew's comment about not doing that cabinet hood over the stove. Good luck! I would love to know what you end up doing. Comments (18)Your inspiration photo includes an oriental rug similiar to your husbands, so keep and use it as your main accent...it's bold and beautiful. Look carefully at your inspiration photo that you would like to imitate ... all your answers are right there. First the room needs to be opened. It is not large like the inspiration room but doable. I would place the sofa against the side wall. Keep it away from the sliders...not only would it cut your main light source (and I think the room needs all the light it can get) but putting 'heavy' furniture pieces in front of large glass windows or doors never makes a good design statement, in my opinion. 'Light' accent furniture is much better...like 2 chairs with a small center round table or a glass and iron sofa table also works well. A room should look like it was planned and not strained. Putting a sofa infront of a slider says I 'ran out of space for my sofa'. A plain wall should anchor the main sofa unless the room is large enough to float the main seating area, which yours is not. I would definately consider side panels to flank your sliders, just like in the inspiration photo. Pick airy fabrics and I would suggest an unlined, sandy color semi opaque linen or off white linen if you want that open beach look. Also glass and light wood or glass and iron tables (coffee and side) will also keep the space open feeling. For your Armoir, use a light color wood or a painted distressed wood like antique white to give that additonal beachy/cottage feel and keep the large armoir from dominating the room. I would angle it in a corner if at all possible....angled pieces are always charming! Also, slipcover your sofa if it is worn...the room needs to look fresh and new. Paint your walls neutral colors. Here's a suggestion....play with the idea of a sandy beige accent wall with Decorator white wall surrounds. Keep the side panels and the accent wall the same color alternating them...i.e. sandy beige panels against the Decorator White wall. Pick your wall hanging and lamps carefully....they should not be overstated or too bold and make sure your husband agrees with your choices otherwise you couldbe in the same room yet feel very lonely....think peace and harmony just like in the picture you love! Hope this helps a bit....See Moreperen.all Zone 5a Ontario Canada
