Living Room Setup and Décor Dilemma! Help this newbie please!

Hi All!

*Warning: long post :)

I’ve been lurking on Houzz for photo inspiration for a few years and have only recently stumbled upon the discussion forums. I’m so excited to find a space where people can help guide me in the right direction. So, here I am, looking for help with my living room setup and décor dilemma…

A little background info first… we moved into this house in September. We have 2.5 year old twins and a dog who can wreak havoc on any space, so it needs to be both functional and esthetically pleasing (for my sanity). We purchased some new furniture for the space before moving in, unfortunately I’m having some buyers remorse with the colours and potentially size of the push back recliner chairs specifically. We are both tall and wanted large comfortable furniture that would last for years with the kids. The house is very warm and has a lot of bead board style cherry wood on the main floor (kitchen, living room and similar coloured hard wood), it also has a lot of cream and brown tile which is outdated now but we aren’t looking to update for a few years. I wanted to bring in some neutral cool tones to contrast the warmth but not sure it’s working out. I’m hoping with a few tweaks (new rug, right art, plants etc) we can make it all come together!

Paint: Sherwin-Williams Pale Oak

Wood: Cherry Wood with bead board

Furniture: Décor-Rest Sofa 2934 (Duncan Grey), Décor-Rest Margaux Push Back Recliner (Balance Graphite)

Room dimensions: 16 x 17 feet

House style: Not sure - what would you call the style of our home? Traditional? Transitional?

Our style: I’m struggling with defining it – maybe a mix of transitional, farmhouse and boho? Maybe too much going on haha

Things we are willing to change:

Furniture layout – the brown chair in the corner is not staying if we stick with current configuration, we just didn’t want to move it until we finalized the setup. You’ll see a double grey toddler helper stool next to my island which the twins use daily so for now it’ll have to stay. Their little brown table under the large red piece of art can be moved.

Rug – this rug fits with our old house colours and furniture, it can be moved to either my bonus room or downstairs livingroom.

Art - I love all of our art from our travels so if we can incorporate that throughout I would be very happy. We have a fair amount of canvas painted art and some local prints that could be interchangeable – I can include pics if that would help? Same for our décor in the built-ins, most of it is from travelling.

Side tables – can refinish or replace. Suggestions for refinishing?

Coffee table/storage ottoman – this is filled with kids toys so any potentially new piece would need storage.

Shelving display/décor placements

Things we cannot change right now:

Colour of wood

Flooring

Lighting

Furniture (couch and chairs)

Fireplace surround

Anything kitchen related (unless it’s décor) – that will be another project in the future.

Initial Thoughts:

Add hanging macramé plants where the brown chair currently is with a large woven basket underneath for blanket/pillow storage or a floor sized plant/tree.

Change out the rug for one that would tie-in colours (cream, light and darker grey).

There’s a lot of lines throughout the space so I’d like to soften it up with some circular décor/furniture – woven basket, large roman numeral wall clock, ottoman or side tables.

I know this is a lot to take in so thanks for reading all the way through.

Thoughts? Suggestions? I’m new to all this so please be kind :) Appreciate all the help!

I originally had the furniture set up this way:

Your room is very nice. I would get a more colorful rug and get a throw or pillows to match one of the colors in it. I can see red, or yellow or aqua or light green.....This depends on your new rug. and your art work (pretty picture by the little table, by the way). I would like to see a fable lamp and small table by the chair by the window. Ceiling lights are fine but lamps make a room cozy IMO. Could have a floor lamp by the other chair. I like the arrangement of your furniture,

Do you have a larger wall for the art next to the window? Did the original furniture layout not work?

@er612 I could move the big piece to my staircase, there's a big empty wall there. What would you suggest I put in it's place?

The original layout was ok - just wanted to play around with placement and see what worked/looked best.

    Thank you @leighanngilson and @erinsean.

I agree with the new (but inexpensive) rug. Do you think a busy pattern would be too much with all the bead board though? We have some navy accents throughout the house too which I love so maybe a beige, navy and grey rug?

I like the original layout but would add curtains, center the sofa on the window, and reduce the number of pillows on the sofa.

Does this piece next to the window work better for scale?

I changed it back to my first arrangement, I think it allows for more furniture and makes the livingroom feel bigger. So far I've reduced pillows, added throws, switched out the large piece of art, added one more side table and two side lamps. Is it getting better?

Lovely home and furniture. I like the new arrangement. If it works for your tv viewing, I would keep it that way.

Does anyone have any suggestions for the left corner near the brown chair? That's where doggy is sleeping now but can move him to where the kids table is. Floor lamp? hanging macrame pants? Large floor plant/tree? basket for throws/ pillows?
Also, rug and ottoman/coffee table suggestions?

I really like what you have done with your room. I would find another room for the brown chair and in its place put some sort of console, maybe with baskets under for toy storage, That may still leave room for sweet doggy.

Sorry. I've been away. What are the dimensions of the area with wood floor? At first glance I would rotate the rug 90 degrees.

The space is 16 x 17. The rug is 7 x 10. I have it this way to allow all front legs of furniture (minus side tables next to couch) to be on it.

First off. You did great. Before seeing the pictures I expected a lot worse. So 👏👏. Anyways I like the furniture the other way. Forsure. The couch belongs in front/ facing the tv. Yes to a new rug. I like the first one you posted. I’d try it out. Love the pillows. Especially the Cognac ones. But maybe spread them out. Move some to the chairs. And other areas in the home. Seems hard to find a spot to sit lol. I would maybe consider a new coffee table too. Great space.

    Thanks everyone.
Does anyone have any idea what style of decor I'm leaning more towards? traditional? transitional?
    Also the style of home?

Your probably boarder like traditional heading towards not completely sure what- maybe transitional with some boho. House seems fairly traditional / craftsman. Lots of character
